Review: This is the must-have volume for someone wanting a geology book to accompany their visit to Death Valley (and it's a tragic waste to visit there without some geologic understanding).

Death Valley's fascinating but complex geologic history is very well explained with the help of outstanding illustrations. This book does a very good job of making the material accessible for non-geologists and geologists alike. Its target audience is clearly non-geologists, but there is plenty here for a geologist to appreciate. This book proved to be essential for planning my visit!

The "vignettes" are effective in highlighting the significant stops, which are further grouped by general location or "area". The book does not contain specific road guides (as Miller and Wright's "Geology of Death Valley" does), but it is not hard to construct one's own itinerary from the maps.

In our one full day bracketed by two half days, we focused on the book's stops near our accommodations at Furnace Creek, taking in Mosaic Canyon, Dantes View, Artists Drive, Golden Canyon, Natural Bridge Canyon, and Badwater with its associated sites. We did a couple of stops not covered in the book, notably Aguereberry Point, which is mentioned with a photo in Vignette 7 as a Panamint-Range complement to Dante's View in the Black Mountains . It 's a good add-on to a trip to must-see Mosaic Canyon (Vignette 10), if you have an appropriate vehicle appropriate for a one-lane dirt road with blind curves. The road was no problem for my rental 2-wheel drive SUV, but I would not take a low-riding sedan. Lots of interesting stops on the way including old mining sites.

As this book suggests, Miller and Wright's "Geology of Death Valley" is an excellent complement, having a target audience that has a bit more geology under their belts and an organization more along the lines of a road guide.

Attached photos are an early morning view of the Panamint Range from Natural Bridge Canyon, view from Aguereberry Point, and a late afternoon view of the Devil's Golf Course.

Review: Curious about the geology of the Eastern Sierras as I visit the area 2-3 times a year. Found this book interesting, engaging (draws you in), and easy to understand (no need to be a geologist). The book's digital images are very clear making it easier to identify points of interest in the landscape. Reading about certain geological sites included in the book, I now plan to visit them during my next trip to the area. So pleased with this book that I've already recommended it to friends.
