Title: Bonnie Brock is back!

Review: I think this author's best Lady Darby books are the ones that center around the relationships among the characters. I consider this one to be at the top of the list. (The mystery is a good one too). Love the interplay among the characters--especially between Brock, Gage and Kiera. I'd give it more than 5 stars if I could....

Review: I have been a big fan of this series, but I have to throw a flag on this entry, for several reasons. Fans will want to read this entry, but I fear, especially during these times, they will be somewhat disappointed. Huber throws a wrench into almost every relationship Kiera enjoys: Alana, Gage, Bree, Anderley, Brock, Maggie...and Kiera's relationship with her own past and present. There is so much angst that it casts a shadow over even the events that should be happy. Kiera experiences profound self-realization in this book, but it is overshadowed by the constant crises, big and small. As to Kiera's pregnancy, there are endless backaches, back rubs, hot water bottles, headaches and hunger, but little thought to the danger of Cholera or criminals or a nurse for the baby or how the baby will change their lives. Altogether too much going on.

The subplot with Alana was totally unbelievable and contrary to Alana's character (the only reason I could think of for her to act the way she did was if she were dying...) This eliminated any soothing, loving, supportive woman from the cast of characters, reducing Kiera's pregnancy to a series of physical discomforts. While this subplot was resolved, it was an unnecessary uncomfortable distraction in a totally uncomfortable book.

There were several places where the author took great leeway with historical accuracy. I won't name them all due to "spoilers" but I will point out that Kiera passing her baby around the drawing room, surrounded by friends, mere days after the baby was born, is completely unbelievable. That she and Gage would take care of the baby themselves, again not believable for the times. Absent was any allusion to nursing the baby, bonding with the baby, or artistic wonder at the infant's tiny hands, feet, etc. The lack of emotional attachment (aside from holding the baby) was glaring. The book was packed with extraneous storylines which detracted from the emotional thread that is usually woven so well by the author.

As mothers know, the birth of a baby does not erase the pain from damaged relationships, so while Kiera has come to a new understanding of and with herself vis a vis society, she will have to heal from new emotional wounds from those closest to her. While she may forgive easily, loyal readers may not.

Title: Another fascinating book

Review: I don't know how Anna Lee Huber does it: create a story that is even more enthralling that previous books. In A Wicked Conceit, Kiera is facing a cholera epidemic, a scurrilous book turned into a very popular play, and a couple of murders, all while being nine months pregnant! At times, I literally held my breath while one secret after another was revealed.

Review: Kiera and Sebastian Gage are back at their home in Edinburgh waiting for the birth of their baby. Unfortunately, they soon learn that someone published a book that glamorized Sebastian and Kiera’s assistance given to a local criminal, Bonnie Brock. The book was turned into stage plays that embarrassed Kiera’s family which had them quarrelling among themselves.

I was looking forward to this story. I really enjoyed the earlier story with Bonnie Brock. He intentionally gets Sebastian riled up. In fact, that part of the story is very entertaining. Brock just shows up when least expected with a threat or a tease that sets Sebastian off. The history of publishing books and producing shows is also interesting. It sent me on a path to some research myself.

The stress that grows between Kiera and her sister Alana, is a portrayal of what women give up to do what is expected of them. What turned me off is the story arc that started in the previous book. I can’t understand how Kiera could deceive her husband, a man she professes to love. Kiera’s excuses didn’t sound real to me. Like the previous book, this all plays false.

I really like these characters, but the ending fell short. Finally, I believe this is the end of this series. I like the path that Kiera and Sebastian are deciding to take for their future. Overall, this series is very good. I like the underlying history to the story. I wish it ended on a sturdier foundation.

Review: Wow. I've been a fan of this series since the beginning. This one was one of the best in my opinion.

Gage and Kiera, on the cusp of becoming parents, are now the subject of public discussion as a book by an anonymous author has been made into a play with them and Bonnie Brock Kincaid as the stars! This is not a good thing.

As people close to the publishing and printing of the book begin to die, Gage, Kiera, and Kincaid are not only the subjects of the book and play, they are also suspects in the murder! As usual, Gage and Kiera begin to look into the death of the publisher and try to talk Kincaid out of getting in the middle of the investigation...not like he listens...

So many twists and turns and then there is a baby coming!

I really enjoyed this book, especially since we're in the midst of a worldwide pandemic now and this book is set during the cholera pandemic in Edinburgh. We've learned so much about epidemiology and illness since the time period the novel is set in, and we're still learning.
