Review: As a single guy who is not currently in a romantic relationship, it's easy to feel that a book about relationships is only for "future reference". After all, it's a good idea to prepare for dating and marriage before you actually start. But what good is relationship advice right now if I'm not in a relationship?News flash: we're all in multiple relationships: relationships with God, family, friends, fellow Christians, coworkers. And, oh yeah, maybe a spouse or boyfriend/girlfriend. Some relationships, of course, never go very deep, and don't really experience the seasons that Debra Fileta writes about. But as I reflected on my relationship with God, for example, I could see how each of these four seasons play out at various times and various ways.However, I especially recommend this book for anyone who is in a romantic relationship, whether dating, engaged, or married. There's a lot of practical counsel for navigating the various stages of a relationship, each of which have their advantages and challenges. It's tempting to gloss over the challenges, but if we fail to deal with issues early on, they will rear their ugly heads in the future.I expect to re-read this book multiple times in the future as I go through various seasons of relationship. It's full of great ideas and counsel, beyond the structure of the four seasons, and well worth reading.I also appreciated that Fileta, after discussing the need to focus on your own issues rather than trying to fix the other person in the relationship, also included a section on toxic relationships. As an advocate for victims and survivors of abuse, I have seen many times where authors and speakers fail to distinguish between struggling relationships and toxic relationships. If one person, for example, is a control freak, the other person will never be able to submit enough to make the relationship healthy. I appreciated that Fileta encourages people in toxic relationships to speak up and not hide what is going on, and to find trustworthy friends and counselors who can help them navigate their difficult path, whatever that may be for their specific journey.A final word of caution is perhaps in order. The idea of four seasons of love is an analogy, and all analogies break down at some point. In a book of this sort, it's important to remember that the analogy is a guide, not a mold to try to force every relationship into. After all, one can experience balmy weather in winter and hailstorms in summer. If the advice fits your situation, take what you can and use it. If it doesn't fit, don't force it.

Review: I got the chance to read an early version of “Love In Every Season”, and I’m so grateful I did. As a single woman who is preparing to do future relationships well, it was hugely helpful, but I’d recommend it for anyone who wants to intentionally build a Godly, healthy relationship, whether single, dating, engaged, or married. Debra walks us through various seasons in a relationship. Here’s a synopsis of what I got from each season.Spring: What you plant at the beginning of a relationship will bear fruit throughout the relationship. Enjoy it, but know that it’s a time to be deliberate, not casual.Summer: Press into connection but also protect yourself in the heat of a deepening relationship. It’s a time to be real but aware of the potential dangers (and she lays out what those might be, whether you’re married or single).Fall: It’s an invitation to go deeper into authenticity, finding out what we have in common and what is different, but to do it well, we must accept the challenge, do conflict well, and drop the facades.Winter: It’s a hard season, but don’t get stuck there. Learn how it happens and learn how to navigate out of it (hint, the answers are different for various situations, which Debra addresses very well).What I appreciated most is how very Biblically-based this book is, and yet applied with expertise that doesn’t detract from truth while making it very practical. We need more books like this. Thank you for writing it, Debra.

Review: I first started reading Debra Fileta’s blog True Love Dates about five years ago when I was deeply struggling with an extended time of singleness and self-doubt. Since then, her books have continually challenged and encouraged me in my journey through singleness and dating to engagement and marriage. Her latest book, Love in Every Season: Understanding the Four Stages of Every Healthy Relationship, is her best yet. It is not an exaggeration to say that it is written for everyone regardless of their current relationship status. Whether or not you are single, dating, engaged, or married, you will be able to recognize yourself or your relationship in one of Fileta’s four seasons of relationships.As the title suggests, Fileta’s latest book details four relationship seasons: Spring is the time of attraction and getting to know each other, and summer is when everything heats up. Fall is a period of learning to navigate conflict and growing into a deeper relationship, while winter is a time filled with more struggles and the potential for apathy. One of the most helpful points in this book is that a healthy relationship will cycle through these seasons multiple times—and not just move on a straight course from infatuation to boredom over the years. Sometimes in our culture it is easy to buy into the idea that marriage is always difficult after the “honeymoon stage” is over, but Fileta reinforces the fact that this is simply not the case in a healthy relationship—especially one in which both people are seeking God and striving for individual health as well.Fileta’s honesty, openness, and relatability, combined with her expertise as a professional counselor engage readers from the first page.
