Review: Having been a life-long Catholic, I have read many writers give their “version” as meaning of the original ancient works. Some. are more defined and clear. This is one of those. After establishing the basis of the work, there is then a defining of the authors explaining. Found to be sound in basics as well as giving sound points for consideration. Informative with thought-provoking work.

Review: The book must be a labor of love as it is exhaustively researched and very articulate. The material seems to be open minded, but within a limited theological framework that excludes some very important points of view. We can agree that the cross is an integral part of foundational Christian reality, and that the preaching of this essential theological paradigm is lacking in some circles. I had to remind myself that the book is primarily addressed to Reformed pastors, and it seems to be primarily addressed to the more progressive traditions that have veered into gnostic viewpoints, which the author spends some time contrasting. I think it accomplishes that mission of preaching very well. The book conveys the cost of sin well and the cosmic battle against the Powers.
However the book lacks the synergism between God's active grace and free will. In it's good effort to emphasize God as an actor, it forgets human responsibility, seeing sin as a Power beyond our own moral agency to choose. Many examples of injustice are cited throughout the book, and the communitarian effects of evil are rightly cited. However, evils that are seen (incorrectly) as merely a matter of merely personal failings are missing. In this aspect, the book takes on a political worldview that The Cross ought to transcend. This really took the persuasive edge from the book for me. It became, ironically, a dry exercise in theology lacking that synergism that calls for a full human response.

I would recommend the book to any pastor I suppose, if it were my place to do so. Or anyone who does not have a good sense of substitution theories etc....I would not recommend it to anyone looking for the life changing human meaning of the Cross, or looking for an exhortation to conversion and love of fellow man. I don't want to be unfair, but the book simply avoids the pointed call for decisive human response the Cross ought to engender.

Review: I can’t remember the last time I was as excited by a book as I am about The Crucifixion. All Christians need to understand the significance of the Cross, and our churches need to teach and preach about the saving suffering of Christ. That is the contention of Fleming Rutledge, noted Episcopal priest and preacher, who has put a lifetime of study into a scholarly yet engaging book, brimming with inspiration and insight. In her own words from the Preface: “What I have attempted—as a pastor and a preacher—is a series of theological reflections on Scripture that I hope will add up to a coherent account of the death of Jesus Christ for the church.”

She has written with three audiences in mind: serious students of theology, pastors who hope to convey Gospel truth to their congregations, and laypeople who wish to gain a better grasp of the Christian faith. As we see the magnitude of the death of Christ, we are drawn into the heart of God. Rutledge insists: “Christians do not simply look to the cross of Christ with prayerful reverence. We are set in motion by its power, energized by it, upheld by it, guaranteed by it, secured by it.”

Rutledge writes from a conservative perspective, rejecting both liberal views and the growing evangelical tendency to focus primarily on positive, uplifting themes. The church needs to return to the sober reality of the vicarious suffering of our Savior. Rutledge contends that the sinful brokenness of humankind made a secular, degrading, horrific death of our Savior necessary. The crucifixion thus is unique in history.

The massive work could have easily been published in two volumes. The first part is a detailed explanation of the death of Christ—the plan, primacy and godlessness of the cross, the gravity of sin and the justice of God. The second part deals with cross motifs in Scripture: the Passover, blood sacrifice, the descent into Hell, ransom and redemption.

At first glance this 660-page volume may seem lofty and daunting, yet I found myself looking forward to every opportunity to get back into it. There is hardly a wasted word. Even the footnotes are engaging; it is often tempting to skip footnotes, yet here they are as substantive and striking as the text. I would go so far as to call The Crucifixion a “page-turner”, with amens and alleluias on nearly every page.
