Title: Examination of a tragedy

Review: This is a detailed overview of the 2018 Paradise, Calif., Camp Fire, from multiple viewpoints -- the residents, the firefighters, the officials, and others. The authors interviewed many residents who survived the fire, also gleaning details about those who didn't. I felt like I knew some of the people after reading this book. A broken part on a PG&E transmission tower is blamed for starting the fire, and the utility company comes in for some major criticism. Their solution has been to cut power to areas, sometimes for weeks, when there is a danger of fires. I can't imagine living in such a situation.

The only thing that disappointed me about this book was that it left out what I think is a major factor in the tragedy associated with these fires: people foolishly building their homes in forested areas that, given the history of the state, are bound to burn sooner or later. This has been a factor in other states, such as Colorado. People want the trees and scenery but spend little or no time considering what could happen. Climate change is mentioned, in that higher temperatures and drought make it more likely that wildfires will happen.

Overall, this is a well-written book that brings home the horror of a wildfire and its aftermath.

Title: Familiar,but interesting look at a modern disaster

Review: It was a fun read( using that term in the sense of readability and not the contents ). The book seemed like reading The Big Burn only in modern times. The authors did a good job of building suspense in what was happening in Paradise that horrible day. They also told the story using accounts of survivors but left you wondering who were the ones left alive.
Non fiction books on famous disasters have to overcome the problem that everyone knows what happens in general and so it becomes a bit of a trick to cover the story and put surprises in. The authors were good at doing this. One way was by not putting an index at the end to prevent skipping ahead to see who does or doesn't survive.
The only downside with the books was an absence of photos to add a visual to the horror.

Review: This book is a must read, absolutely. There are a number of books about historical fires that are interesting but don't serve as a warning about what can happen today. We get complacent.
I live part time in California about 70 miles from Paradise and know some of the people who have moved to Grass Valley & Nevada City temporarily. Our Alta Sierra Ranches property lost much of our back yard to a forest fire a couple of years prior and our house was saved only by the wind changing direction and taking two nearby houses instead.
We had four minutes to evacuate and no warning because the fire began about 200 yards down the road and the flames were fifteen feet high by the time they reached us. My son just looked out the window and discovered it. People who do not live in places like this can have no idea what wind can do with a spark and how fast it can do it.
As we fled, a plane was already spreading retardant and a fire truck came up our driveway two minutes later. It stayed there for about five days, putting out hot spots. I can not thank them enough.

Title: Great insights!

Review: As this book points out, the fire in Paradise was predicted for decades. My husband's brother lost everything but his life and the lives of his pets. The fire literally roared down on him, and he, like many of the people in the book, had only a few minutes to escape. He was among the lucky ones. Despite knowing the potential for danger, people did not or were unable to prepare, often due to age, physical infirmity, or the simple geography of their homes in relation to the fire. When it did happen, many lives were lost because the risk and the escape plans had not been understood or practiced by many residents. The book also plays tribute to the firemen and residents whose quick thinking played a role in saving many lives. This is a morality play for anyone who lives in an area prone to natural disaster. Highly recommended, but have a hanky ready.

Review: I expected to enjoy this book. However, what I did not expect to happen while reading Fire in Paradise, was that I would be unable to put it down, and that I would consume its contents in just a couple of days. I became completely immersed into a story that I, although from a much further and safer distance, experienced and watched unfold.

The stories from survivors and emergency personal are raw and beautiful. They tell the story from unimaginable perspectives and provide depth and celebration to those who lost their lives. If anything, you should read this book to know who these people are/were. Many of the victims of the Camp Fire were elderly and disabled. If not to just know their stories, pick up this book to also remind and humble yourself of your current situation and abilities. Lastly, you should read Fire in Paradise to take heed in their warning of what may not be a far-off future for all of us in California.

Title: A Western Tragedy

Review: An easy read about a complex subject. While reading this I can’t help but wonder how many more towns in the Western U.S. will suffer the same fate as Paradise, CA did? How many more lives will be lost because of a lack of forest and wild land management in California? How many more homes and businesses will be lost in the year round fire season before people rise up and demand forest thinning, underbrush management and electric infrastructure upgrades? This was a tragedy that didn’t have to be as bad as it was had mandatory brush clearance been headed.

Title: Kept Me Reading

Review: The story of this fire was fascinating. There were a lot of characters, but they were easy to keep straight because the author described them so well. You saw them as people with quirks, detailed descriptions and personalities right away, so you just remembered. I say this because I often read too fast and forget people, but not on this book. There were so many stories of how people survived or didn't that the author must have spent hours and hours interviewing everyone, taking copious notes and studying the land before the fire, during and after. Really good book. I felt like knew the characters. The story makes me look around my semi-rural neighborhood with different eyes. There is lots of fuel for fires around us.
