Title: Sweat, grit and the human soul

Review: First of all, let me say I know the author, George Rosen, but not extremely well. And I have never known him as an author before. We went to the same high school North of Chicago after which he married a friend of mine. Some years later I saw them and loved their stories about their time in the Peace Corps.
If you are looking for some escapist world or fantasy like J.K. Rowling, this is not the book for you--but it is just as exciting to the imagination.
The stories are written with great dexterity and range over time and space ( from back in the 1970's and to such places as Mexico and Africa..)
These stories deserve all the praise I have heard about them in other places...they have echoes of Joseph Conrad and also remind me some of Chekhov's short stories! I would say this even if I did not know George...
But they are not what you would call "easy reads." They are very thought provoking and pithy.
My favorite--like the other reviewer on this site I noticed-- is "Mobley's Troubles" about an aging white aid worker in Africa who more or less adopts an African boy and does his best to help him...however, the boy's high spirits get him into trouble in a society that is often Draconian in its threatened (or real) punishments --nothing like the juvenile court system we have in the States that makes conservative people so irate about "coddling young criminals."
One aspect of the story that is very deftly drawn is the way different groups of missionaries are competing with each other in this African country and how they have no interest at all really in the subtleties of the native culture, just their own agendas.
The main character, Mobley, is one of those skilled mechanics who can't explain how he does what he does to other people, he can just DO it. So typical of the real world.
Summation of all the far flung stories: reminds us once again that around the world we are all cut from the same cloth.

Title: What we have here..."
Date: Reviewed in the United States πΊπΈ on May 1, 2020
Review: The stories in this beautifully written collection are set in different parts of the world, at different times, and involve different characters in their aspirations, failures, and successes. All seven stories explore a universal human problem: the desire, often the need, to know what is in other human beings' minds, and the terrible difficulty β perhaps the impossibility β of doing so.
Often, as I read these stories, I couldn't help thinking of Strother Martin's famous line in the film "Cool Hand Luke": "What we have here is a failure to communicate."
Frequently with subtle humor, always with astonishing insight, George Rosen muses on failures to communicate and the ways people may approach, sometimes use, sometimes sidestep, and occasionally overcome them. Taken as a whole, this collection is tremendously entertaining and definitely thought-provoking.
Highly recommended!

Title: Left Behind
Date: Reviewed in the United States πΊπΈ on January 16, 2013
Review: This is a slim book of seven short stories, not extraordinary but all quietly satisfying. Four stories set in East Africa, where the author once served in the Peace Corps, alternate with three in North America: one I think in Maine, one in Mexico, and one a story about Mexico told by a middle-aged man in a sauna in Maine. Indeed all of George Rosen's protagonists seem to be older men, left behind by life. The main point of the sauna story, for instance, does not seem to be the long-ago near-drowning in Mexico, so much as the fact that the teller and all his friends have aged so much since. The protagonist of the other story set in Mexico, a country he visited with his wife years before, returns there when he feels his life beginning to unravel: "Benson realized now that everything had been laid down then -- all the betrayals, incandescences, abrasions that now blurred in his mind into the long arc of love's decline -- like objects placed in a time capsule and sealed within a cornerstone."
The quality of being left behind takes a more specific meaning in the three stories set in Kenya during the decade or so after the country's independence from Britain in 1964. Significant characters in each are either former British colonialists or American missionaries who have remained behind in a changed country. In one, the spit-and-polish headmaster of a private school gets his comeuppance in a soccer match against a poorly-funded African school run by a despised former pupil. In another, an unemployed white hunter is reduced to stealing to support his twelve children by three African wives. And in a third, an old missionary packs to go home, his spirit broken by his failure to control a native boy whom he had raised almost as a son. Together, the three stories span the gamut between comedy, tragicomedy, and near-tragedy.
It was only in the concluding story, though, the title tale, that I felt any sense of a greater dimension. Looking at East African colonization from near its start rather than after its end, this follows a group of 19th-century British missionaries as they sail round the Cape to convert the tribes of the equatorial interior, in the footsteps of Dr. Livingstone himself. But one of them, Andrew Seavey, loses his faith on the journey. Or rather, which is even more fascinating, he sees his faith expand to a point which makes race and sectarianism irrelevant; since God is in everything, there is nobody for him to convert. The other stories were pretty good, but this one is exceptional.

Review: Rosen writes in a quiet voice. Nicely turned stories that are infused with melancholia. Touching, really. What's not to like?
