Title: Sub Par Stories at a REALLY High Price
Date: Reviewed in the United States on June 26, 2019
Review: We’ve officially entered the 1950’s and the Batman stories are still extremely forgettable. There are stories that perhaps aren’t great but help to fill out the world of Batman. They might introduce a new character or element that gets reused in the future. Then we have stories with one-time villains featuring little to no distinguishing characteristics. I would call these disposable stories. Most of the stories here are disposable and will probably be forgotten the moment you close the book.

We do get the first appearance of Floyd (Deadshot) Lawton who dresses in a tuxedo, top hat and domino mask rather than his modern supervillain costume. Deadshot is more of a fancy pants trick shot artist with a pair of six shooters. We also get three appearances of Killer Moth who was originally a villainous analogue to Batman, even having his own Moth Signal that criminals could use when help is needed. There are the first appearances of The Knight and The Squire as well as Wingman, who all got a lot of usage by Grant Morrison. This volume features the reformation of Catwoman, which at the time was meant to be entirely legit. Probably the biggest story is the first appearance of the Red Hood which is the first time the Joker received any kind of an origin. The Red Hood would be put on the shelf until Alan Moore used him in the Killing Joke in 1988 and now he’s a heavily used character although no longer the Joker. We also, unfortunately, get more time travel stories and even one with Batman in space.

These stories often have some really amateurish pacing. In one tale, Batman is taken by some pirates and β€œkeel hauled” (dragged under the water by a rope). In one panel he’s tied up on the ship, next panel he’s in the water and then in the next panel he’s tying the rope to a rock. Suddenly, he’s out of the water and bowling over the villains. It’s not a matter of rapid pacing it’s weak writing that hardly gives the reader time to process what’s happening and I often find myself zoning out while reading these stories. We are treated to one of the most infamous Batman stories of the Golden Age, β€œThe Joker’s Comedy of Errors!”, in which the word β€˜boner’ is used, probably around 50 times. Don’t believe me? Look it up.

I was more forgiving of the Golden Age Batman stories when the Omnibus were $75 but after they ballooned up to $125 the cost become much more apparent. I’m not expert enough to know whether the cost increase had anything to do with an increased quality in the book binding but I can’t tell the difference between the binding in the $75 books and the $125 books. It certainly isn’t due to an increased volume of material. I guess maybe production costs increased abruptly and significantly or perhaps DC decided that their Omnibus editions were being bought by a niche group of collectors with disposable income and if they’d pay $75, they’d pay $125. Either way, I buy these more out of a sunk cost and desire to finish what I’ve started because if my funds were more limited I wouldn’t pay this kind of money for a bunch of sub average stories. Personally, I paid $76 on Amazon which is just a tad above the current price of $69.83. Anyone who pays full price better REALLY love Golden Age stories.

Title: A great collection of late Golden Age Batman, well-restored
Date: Reviewed in the United States on October 9, 2019
Review: Batman exits the 1940s after the first three stories in this volume, which reprints all the stories from Batman, Detective Comics and World's Finest Comics from December 1949 through September 1951. One of the biggest things I noticed, and this started in the last volume but it really kicks into high gear here, is how often the same basic story ideas are explored from different angles in different stories. A good example would be Bruce Wayne's turn as a policeman from the end of volume 6. This time around we get Bruce Wayne as a private detective, and as a riveter, both in the service of solving a crime of course. There are two stories in a row where someone that Bruce, not Batman, helped send to jail, comes back for revenge on Bruce. There are a couple of stories involving relics of the past being used for modern crimes. This is not to say that the plot mechanics of these stories are the same, not at all, but the concept behind them can often be the same. We also get a few more stories where Bruce is revealed to be Batman (even to the Penguin once!), but Bruce contrives some way to make it appear that he's not actually Bruce, just someone else in disguise, so the secret ID is preserved. It's no surprise to me that some repetition has set in after 11-12 years of publication and nearly 400 Batman stories by the time this volume ends. Coming up with new ideas month after month had to be a real challenge.

Joker and Penguin both make multiple appearances, as usual. Joker finally gets some background and an origin with the original Red Hood story reprinted in this volume. Catwoman is also finally first named Selina Kyle in a story from this volume, and she retires from crime, helping the police out on several occasions. It's interesting to me that both characters had to wait a decade to get an origin story of any sort. We still have not seen Penguin's origin or name in the comics, though his name was given in one of the Batman newspaper strips in the early 40s. Alfred gets a few brief appearances, but the trend of barely mentioning him continues. At least we don't have to suffer through his interminable attempts to be a detective any more. Killer Moth gets his first appearance and a trilogy of stories as an "anti-Batman" who helps other criminals before apparently being written out of the series. Whatever his effectiveness as a villain, it's good to see the writers continuing to introduce new costumed enemies for Batman.

Art restoration in this volume is some of the best I've seen, and I think we may finally have hit the point where nearly everything is modern digital restoration, as opposed to the older material from some of the earlier volumes that dates back to the first Archives in the late 80s and early 90s. Some of the linework in this book is as crisp and clean as any I've seen from DC's Golden Age books. This book seemed to go by much faster than previous volumes for some reason. I can't explain why that is. It's a good collection, but it'll be a long wait for volume 8, solicited for May of 2020. We have to be close to the end of the Golden Age here, and I suspect somewhere around the beginning of the Comics Code is where DC will choose to start branding these books as Silver Age.

Title: A delightful collection of late 1940s and early 1950s Batman stories!
Date: Reviewed in the United States on July 16, 2019
Review: Roy Thomas, who should be declared a national treasure, wrote the outstanding introduction to this Batman Omnibus Vol. 7. That was a good sign, off the bat.
Let me say this up front- I was expecting a pretty lame set of stories in this one, but I bought it anyway because I've always envied Biljo White for his complete collection of Batman comics, and I'm determined to get my set via these omnibuses. I've only just begun to read Volume 7. Much to my surprise, I'm actually very pleased! It probably helps that my super power is that I'm able to revert back to my 12-year-old persona (I'm 65) when reading these omnibuses.
So, in that state, "The Batmobile of 1950" (which among other things basically celebrates, inadvertently (in my opinion), the new jet technology due to our nabbing of Werner Von Braun and co. after WW2), is an absolute DELIGHT. I love history, and I'm extremely interested in WW2 and its aftermath, so it's fun to see the new jet technology incorporated into the Batmobile. Needless to say, I also love "The Historian of Crime", a very nicely done detective story with a satisfying ending. I wish comics were written this way now!!
Enough reviewing! Thank you, Roy Thomas and D.C. for this great book and series!
