It’s a matter of security. When the Ring of Fire drags Grantville, West Virginia back to seventeenth-century Germany, down-time veteran Edgar Neustatter finds himself among the survivors of a unit devastated by the up-time Americans and their Swedish allies. After wintering in Grantville, they return home to find that while they have changed, their village has not. Having glimpsed the promise of a republic ruled by its people rather than lords and tyrants, Neustatter leads his men and their families back to Grantville to establish a new agency: Neustatter’s European Security Services. The city from the future counts cowboys and detectives amo

Title: Mommy! There's a Mr. Noisestepper at the door!"

Review: Eric Flint's 1632 is one of my favorite time travel stories, but I'm not a fan of its heap of convoluted sequels and offshoot novels, maybe because other writers had stepped in to co-author them. But there are the occasional gems. Mark H. Huston's Up-time Pride and Down-time Prejudice was excellent, as was George Huff and Paula Goodlett's A Holmes for the Czar . And so is Bjorn Hasseler's trilogy that launches with A Matter of Security.

Those who'd read the Grantville Gazette volumes may already be familiar with Edgar Neustatter as he and his security service had popped up here and there. A Matter of Security tells the origins of NESS and of how Neustatter and his crew - eight men from the same poor village in Holstein-Gottorp - came to Grantville and made a life for themselves.

With the 1632 series, I like it when we're offered stories in which we experience the same events but thru the eyes of outsiders, the natives. This book takes us back to the early days of Grantville's arrival in Thuringia and carries the reader thru the various conflicts that took place in 1632 on thru the battle at Wismar. For those that get psyched about diving into the geopolitical and theological landscapes, don't fret as the author touches on those aspects.

Me, I was more into the human elements of the story. Certainly, there's fascination in reading about how Grantville addressed the issue of more and more refugees trudging into town seeking asylum, as well as the sheer political kerfuffle throughout Europe provoked by the materialization of Grantville. But damn if the author didn't introduce a collection of rootable characters whose story arcs you wanted to follow.

Possibly some plot spoilers.

It starts with Neustatter, our l7th century thinking man's hero. The men from the village take their cues from him. Neustatter would rather talk his way out of predicaments or come to some other peacable resolution, but he is for damn sure decisive when bold action is required, as demonstrated by the opening sequence, at the battle at Alte Veste, during which Neustatter proved he will do whatever it takes to safeguard his men.

To repeat, I really, really loved it that the story is told from the down-timers' perspectives. I dug reading about their impressions of the West Virginians (the up-timers), their subversive ideologies and technological wonders. I loved their assimilation process, the day in the life minutiae. We track Neustatter's group as they go from prisoners of war to converts to respected citizens, as they go from living in basic refugee housing and taking on hard labor jobs to founding their own security consulting firm, Neustatter's European Security Services (or NESS). It's awesome that Neustatter falls in love with cinema and that his favorite movies featured John Wayne. I smirked when he got it into his head that he wanted to wear a white cowboy hat (because good guys wear white hats, natch). Neustatter was once heard to remark: "Ja. I learn things from all the movies, but I probably learn the most from John Wayne."

Don't get it twisted, though. Time and again Neustatter demonstrates his savvy. His situational awareness not only applies during times of danger and during his time as a recruit in Grantville's National Guard, but also in areas of business and diplomacy. Our boy knows how to network. He knows how to sidestep those local political minefields. Watch as he grows his security service firm.

And I like Astrid Schaubin just as much. Her story arc is even more impressive, seeing as how, in the course of three books, this 21-year-old, whose brother and cousin are part of NESS, goes from being a cleaning servant to a secretary to eventually a field agent and leader of one of the NESS teams. Oh, but Astrid is bright, highly inquisitive, resourceful, and doesn't much need supervision. Unlike Neustatter, Astrid is into mysteries. It's why NESS doesn't only function as a security consultant but provides investigative services, as well. I get a kick that her primary source of inspiration is Nancy Drew. A running gag throughout the series is that everyone expects her and Neustatter to hook up, except these two aren't interested in each other romantically. They agree that they're too much cut from the same mold.

Anyway, my favorite bits have to do with our down-timers' day-to-day moments of living, the little triumphs they attain as they progressively better their situation and gain a reputation not as mercenaries - those are not to be trusted - but, rather, as contractors one can rely on to safeguard a convoy or people or, heck, a building. Neustatter had this notion to present an image of NESS as reminiscent of the old, up-time guards from Wells Fargo. Again, John Wayne stuff. I love the tight-knit sense of community, love that the men from the village and their families elect to stay together, either living in the same apartments or next to each other. And I enjoyed Neustatter's channeling James T. Kirk as he and his men, having signed on as recruits in the National Guard, are presented with a no-win scenario as a training exercise. Now watch him Kobayashi Maru this b-tch. In the grand scheme of things, maybe the exploits of NESS are overshadowed by what Mike Stearns, Julie Sims, or Captain Gars have got up to. Still, there's space enough for the deeds of Neustatter, Astrid, and NESS to circulate and grow in the telling. They're certainly much more fun to read about than the main 1632 story arc.

Title: Engaging

Review: Author Bjorn Hasseler brings us a story of German refugees who hail from a little village hard by the border with Denmark. Victimized by war and their feckless local little lord, they quite against their will, spend six years as soldiers on both sides of the big war in Germany.
Captives of the NUSE, they become familiar with Up-time thinking and prefer it to the customary bullying, lordly thievery, and exploration at the hands of their 'lord and master.' Small wonder.
For me, the best part of the book was when the ex-mercenary soldiers sign up for the army reserves in Grantville and undergo a hostile book camp ordeal. I found the training exercise quite believable.
Hasseler has a good grasp of writing words that we want to read.
I think this is a must-read for fans of the series and not a reluctant but rather an enthusiastic read.

Title: Good as Any 163{3-7] Book

Review: Hasseler has written a book about Edgar Neustatter and his companions who I hope to see in many more book. And I hope to see them in the 1632 Imprint rather than the Ring of Fire Imprint so they are easier to find. It's well written. It was a fun and a quick read ( finished it in 24 hours ). Edgar, Astrid and the rest of the crew have taken the lessons that they learned in USE Reservist Basic and from Uptimers to heart and applied them well. I can only say, "Howdy Pilgrim. Welcome to the Wild West of USE!" And more please! Many, many more! I love the Ness crew ( ever the FUBAR Lukas ), I love their adaptions of uptime solutions to 1633 situations and I like Herr Hasseler's writing. So, I want to see Edgar's next Duke usage or impersonation in print soon. About 350 to 400 pages, please, would do the trick nicely. Perhaps, "Never apologize, never explain," since Edgar has seen Yellow Ribbon and perhaps more of the Calvary trilogy. Or, something from The Horse Soldiers or Hondo. I hope those went downtime with Grantville.

Review: I was an avid reader of the Grantville Gazette on Baen Books for years. I remember Neustatter from some of these stories and I think this book just brings them together with some additional material. There was a great deal of repetition especially when it came to describing the locals in Grantvillle. I think most of this comes from just putting together different short stories. For being largely a compilation there was actually a decent flow to the stories and some good character development. I like Hasseler's style and will be looking for more.

Title: Well done
Date: Reviewed in the United States on August 8, 2021
Review: I found this to be one of the best of the Ring of Fire offshoot productions. I have read some of the NESS stories n the Granville Gazettes, but I liked this on even more. It is a book rather than a collection of stories, and the development of plot and characters seems natural. For me, this book does the best job of showing how down-timers adapt to the strange world of Granville. To some, the basic training sequence may appear to be slow going. But I found ta chapter simply to be a more detailed record of how the characters learn new lessons.
My only problem was putting this book down to do other things.

Title: Very nice surprise.
Date: Reviewed in the United States on April 1, 2021
Review: I had not idea what to expect except from the cover description. It did not sound all that exciting to me but I had just finished another Ring of Fire Press 1632 title and felt like staying in the same universe so bought this and started it. Finished in two sittings instead of one only because I needed to sleep. The origin story of a private security service. Not a private military company like Black Water. Think Pinkerton or Wells Fargo from the 19th century though on a far smaller scale. I hope the author writes more.
