Review: At 73, I have been disenchanted with many books of late. My reading has fallen off considerably. I purchased this book with some trepidation. I wondered if it was going to be another sleep-inducing book. Wonder of wonders, I loved it!The author suffers childhood depression, parental abuse, postpartum depression, and a conflicted mother-daughter relationship culminating in a roller coaster ride with her mother who begins to suffer from dementia.I loved the fact that I could feel empathy for all of the family members with the exception of the author's father. I wanted to reach into the book and give the author's young daughter, Zoe, a hug since she was so intelligent and understanding. I felt that the author's husband deserved kudos for being so patient with an in-law, and I understood both the mother's and the daughter's feelings as they navigated the ups and downs of a relationship spoiled by dementia.Believe it or not, this book made me laugh out loud. There were many ironies. I expected a sad ending, and I was surprised that there was hope and joy at the end. I wanted to give them all hugs for surviving some difficult experiences and for growing in the process of these experiences.I looked forward to reading it every night.

Review: "What if we aren't really mothers at all, but daughters, reaching back to be mothered?" This is a paraphrased section from Maya Lang's exquisite memoir, WHAT WE CARRY (Dial Press, April 2020), which I absolutely loved. This story shimmers with precision and perception; it's at once raw and graceful, a tender exploration of family and fraught mother-daughter relationships.Maya Lang grew up idolizing her 'can do' physician mother, who immigrated to the U.S. from India to complete her residency in psychiatry, while raising her children and keeping a traditional Indian home. Maya's mother had always been caring and supportive, but then...something shifted, something Maya didn't understand. Now, in Seattle, 3,000 miles from her mother, Maya is married and expecting her first baby. She's alone in a new city and a husband who travels for work. And the baby comes, and so, too does depression. Maya reaches out. Her mother is a psychiatrist; surely she will be of help. But she's not. She dismisses Maya, her worries and concerns. She says, "you'll find a way."Maya does find a way, but it's not easy. WHAT WE CARRY is so much more than estrangement and new motherhood; it's more than postpartum depression and anxiety; it's also about early-onset dementia and selfhood. It's about myths and stories we're told in childhood; illusions of our family origin. At each turn, there is deeper insight and understanding, it's about what happens as we let go; it's about motherless daughters, mothering ourselves, and parenting our parents. It's a must-read.I was reminded of the work of Melissa Cistaro (PIECES OF MY MOTHER) meets SHADOW DAUGHTER (Harriet Brown), with a touch of WITHOUT A MAP (Meredith Hall) and perhaps maybe MOTHERLESS DAUGHTERS (Hope Edelman).L.Lindsay|Always with a Book

Review: I loved reading Maya Shanbhag Lang’s exquisite memoir, What We Carry. She writes about her relationship with her mother with searing honesty and extreme tenderness. The unveiling of family secrets is done with such perfect precision and pacing, that it's hard not to feel like you're on the path of discovery with the author. In Lang’s concise prose, we gradually learn the ways in which her psychiatrist mother’s dementia is affecting their relationship as well as her mother’s ability to cope on her own. She eventually takes her mother in to live with her, and while her mother’s short-term memory is compromised, we learn family secrets that extend back to the time before the narrator was born, and which shake up the narrator’s sense of who she’d always believed her mother had been. It’s also a story of love and forgiveness, and so important for anyone navigating through difficult family relationships, which, let's face it, is most of us. A truly unforgettable read!

Review: I enjoy literature set in places and times I can only imagine because when they are well-researched by the author they are richly woven with history, facts, and include cultural details that offer the backdrop I so enjoy while reading a fiction novel - it makes it memorable. Other favorite writers include Pearl Buck, Amy Tan, and Issac Dinesen who have given me hours and hours of the same kind of reading pleasure. This was also a book I took with me to read in various appointments, etc. because the plot line was easy to pick up again even if a little time had passed. We can always use those reads!

Review: The first two-thirds of this book is quite engaging; the last third overwrought and repetitious. The author repeats over and over her developmental ties to her idealized mother, only to state and re-state her various disappointments when she uncovers the truths which undercut the myths she herself constructed. I found myself skimming the final chapters because there was so little story left. Those last chapters amounted to little more the retelling of what had already been said. I was quite bored by the end. I would definitely recommend a very edited down version as an interesting article. I would not recommend the book.

Review: Wow. Any daughter, any mother, should read this book. It so completely captures the complicated, deep dynamic between them. I lost my own mother ten years ago, and our relationship was very close but very emotionally complex. This book helped put so many of my feelings into words and helped me celebrate my mother and forgive myself for any negative feelings. Also, it made me want to be a better, more present mother to my own adult daughters. Loved this book so much.
