Review: This is a well-written, well-sequenced and reassuring guide into meditation, how to do it, what helps it, what it's value is, what the obstacles and hindrances are to meditation and general composure, with well-experienced guidance to practical blending of meditation practice with general life experience day to day, hour to hour in so many different situations we experience. A superior little book because it is focused and loaded with practical information and avoids the common vague "beginner" style of excess introductory chat and also avoids the "priestly class" talking-down and withholding of information also commonly found in any spiritual guidance/coaching book. When the authors are widely experienced in the practice and communicating this, it shows. I have the Pocket Classic print and have it highlighted, underlined, marginal noted and dog-eared quite a bit. I have two copies just for myself, and have given away several to close and valued friends as gifts. Anyone in sports or engaging in any creative venture requiring focus, resilience, positive energy and liberation from hindrances and obstacles (inner and outer) will appreciate reading this little book and will be rewarded so many times over if they start doing some of the meditation practices in earnest. Enjoy. This is a winner, one of the "best of" on the market, for sure.

WHEN THE MIND IS STILL, WE CAN SEE A MAGNIFICENCE IN EVEN THE MOST ORDINARY THINGS--THE VIVIDNESS OF A SUNSET, THE WARMTH OF A SMILE, THE SIMPLICITY OF SERVING A CUP OF TEA. Here are the chapters: 1) Discovering the Heart of Meditation 2) Meditation Instructions 3) Difficulties and Hindrances 4) Suffering: The Gateway to Compasion 5) Integrating Practice. (Each chapter is amazing but chapter five to me is the best. I have probably 85% of it highlighted!)
This is a life-changing book. It's small enough to carry on your body and profound enough to envelop in your heart. I will cherish this always. My wish for all who read this is on page 170, paragraph one.

Review: A concise summary, reminder - small enough to carry around remind (self remembering) the lessons if one forgets. For example - as I was already "tithing" my belongings (most of) to the "universe" (those who could use them) and when I feel that inner tug of war (one of several stages and now I am moving towards the next - yeah! lol) I turn to the pages on generosity - and the different stages as explained by the authors.

I had been in Ouspensky type classes for decades, studied other spiritual material - this book again is a great source to assist... (gets right to the point and a reminder for me).

Title: Profoundly Useful Book

Review: I found an old copy of this book at a retreat and started reading it. It's the perfect size and has the perfect categories to study to remind myself of why I meditate. It took all the discipline I had to not steal it even when I knew that doing so would break the precepts I have come to know and love. I just knew that it would be hard to find and more expensive than it was when it was first published. And of course, I was right - Now it's pay $21.99 or more for a small USED book that was once much less. Or I can purchase a new copy But I managed to NOT steal the book and will be collecting my change until I have enough to purchase a new book, the costs of which START at $139.96 + shipping and tax. OUCH!

It is, however, a truly useful book to keep with one at all times. So I'll have to figure something out!

Review: In my opinion, this is the greatest book I have ever read on insight meditation. It can be a bit confusing and requires contextual interpretation (don't take things out of context of his discussions!). Great instructions and guides for how to deal with mental states as they arise.
