Robert E. Lee: A Life by Allen C. Guelzo Book Review

Name: Robert C. Solomon, M.D.

Review: This superbly researched and written book on Robert E. Lee is neither worshipful nor hypercritical. The author begins by questioning why one would undertake to write a biography of a criminal traitor, especially one whose traitorous crime was commanding an army to fight a war for the preservation of one of humanity's most heinous practices. Yet undertake the task he did, with excellent results. Heartily recommended!

Title: Adds nothing to what we know of Lee

Review: This biography is competent, but ultimately disappointing. Guelzo has nothing new to say about Lee as a person or as a military leader, nor about the times in which he lived. The question arises, why was it written? It is, of course, difficult to find anything new to say about a much written-about figure like Lee, but David Reynolds recently accomplished it in his excellent and fascinating biography of Lincoln.
Guelzo has unearthed no new facts. And where Guelzo ventures judgements, they tend to be poorly supported. He states that for Lee slavery was "an abstraction." This is absurd. Slavery was anything but an abstraction for Lee; he lived with slaves most of his life, and was on intimate terms with a great many of them. It is Guelzo for whom slavery is an abstraction; for Lee it was an institution made up of individual human beings whom he knew well. Certainly Lee's views of slavery are open to criticism, but not because slavery was an abstraction to him.
Guelzo also suggests that Lee was motivated to cast his lot with Virginia by a desire to save his wife's family estate, Arlington. The evidence for this contention is extremely thin (23 years after the fact Edward Townsend reported that he "overheard" a comment to that effect in a meeting between Lee and Winfield Scott to which he was not privy), and has been discounted by other historians. It is also implausible; Lee was well aware that, because of its strategic position, the Union would almost certainly seize Arlington, and within less than a week of his resignation from the Army was urging his wife to leave to avoid capture.
Guelzo condemns Lee as a traitor, but his discussion of that issue is superficial and obtuse. As a legal matter, Lee could be guilty of treason only if secession was unconstitutional. That had not been determined in 1861, and was ultimately determined, not in a court of law, but on the battlefield. This was endlessly debated in the 19th century. Even in the North, opinion was divided. Thaddeus Stevens, the most radical of the radical Republicans, did not believe that the Confederates were traitors, an offered to help defend Jefferson Davis in court. If you want a good introduction to the legal issues, read Secession on Trial by Cynthia Nicoletti. As a moral matter, if Lee was a traitor, then so was Washington, and many others who are now considered national heroes in their countries.
Guelzo describes Lee's General Orders No. 9, his last communication with the Army of Northern Virginia, as an "episode in bitterness" and "incendiary." Really? Read General Orders No. 9 for yourself:

"After four years of arduous service marked by unsurpassed courage and fortitude, the Army of Northern Virginia has been compelled to yield to overwhelming numbers and resources.

I need not tell the survivors of so many hard fought battles, who have remained steadfast to the last, that I have consented to the result from no distrust of them.

But feeling that valour and devotion could accomplish nothing that could compensate for the loss that must have attended the continuance of the contest, I have determined to avoid the useless sacrifice of those whose past services have endeared them to their countrymen.

By the terms of the agreement, officers and men can return to their homes and remain until exchanged. You will take with you the satisfaction that proceeds from the consciousness of duty faithfully performed, and I earnestly pray that a merciful God will extend to you his blessing and protection.

With an unceasing admiration of your constancy and devotion to your Country, and a grateful remembrance of your kind and generous consideration for myself, I bid you an affectionate farewell."

An episode in bitterness?

Perhaps someday another Robert E. Lee biography will be written which really breaks new ground and adds a new dimension, or greater depth, to our understanding of Lee. This is not that book. If you are looking for a good introduction to Lee, stick to Emory Thomas or Douglas Southall Freeman.

Title: Treason?!
Date: Reviewed in the United States πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ on October 11, 2021
Review: What if Reconstruction had been successful and Jim Crow terrorism and the resulting subjugation of a whole people in our republic had not occurred and the freed slaves and their descendants had achieved full integration into the great American society and enjoyed equal status and equal opportunity with the absence of discrimination or bias?

Imagine then trying to propose that Robert E. Lee was not a traitor. But how silly you would look if you actually alleged something so preposterous in those circumstances. If you said he was a man to be admired your interlocutors would rightfully consider you to be demented or deranged. To them, Lee would represent a pathetic, perhaps tragic, flawed relic of a defective segment of our history. They could easily see him as a traitor, a man who took up arms against his country in order to defend such a despicable institution as race-based slavery and he would certainly be no one to be venerated and not ever called a patriot.

But, sadly, such was not the case. Those things did not happen. Reconstruction failed and Jim Crow took over and racism, slavery's brother-in-arms, was not vanquished. The vestiges of slavery persist in overt racism and covert racism like putting forth the 'Myth of the Lost Cause' and saying that Lee was a patriot.

There was a time when I had Lee up on a pedestal. I was younger and ignorant. Hungry for Civil War history I devoured books written by similarly ignorant people before our contemporary awakening about racism. I have learned and evolved. The most important thing I have come to know is that I no longer should continue to be part of the problem. I can regard Robert E. Lee for what he was and I can admire Allen Guelzo for having the courage to write such a book in these fractious times when people openly criticize him for speaking the truth and telling it like it was.

Add:

Nearly finished and it is a superb biography of Robert E. Lee. It presents a nuanced and close look at Lee as a father and husband and a career soldier and engineer and educator. All facets are in view including the physical (his bearing, stamina, and illnesses), his prowess as a military supremo, and also his family relations and his politics. The details of his battles and campaigns are appropriately capsulized with all the pertinent information available for the uninitiated to follow. Although I am not a novice I came away with new information and perspective about Lee's motivations and thinking.

In the end I resigned myself neither to worship nor demonize the man. Time will judge.

Title: Excellent work on a fascinating historical figure.
Date: Reviewed in the United States πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ on December 2, 2021
Review: I have always enjoyed learning about the Civil War and am a very big fan of Prof. Guelzo, so I was eager to read his work on Robert E. Lee-- certainly an enigmatic figure.

The book was very well researched and full of information. Occasionally, the author shifted back and forth in time a bit (perhaps unavoidable) which sometimes made it more challenging to follow. I would add that Professor Guelzo's thoughts on the recent controversies on statues of Lee were interesting and very much worth reading.

I do have one criticism of the book which (slightly) dampened my enjoyment. It appears that Professor Guelzo just doesn't really like his subject very much. This leads to occasionally (and often subtle) observations that border on the snarky and interpretations that tend to lean towards the negative.

I am certainly not arguing that Prof. Guelzo (or anyone) is bound to like Robert E. Lee, or consider him (as some biographers implausibly have) a near-perfect human being. Nevertheless, the book would have been better had it been (as some suggested) a more impartial assessment.
