Review: I loved reading this book. I wanted to learn more about apples because I have a small apple orchard. I found it inspirational and made me feel like going foraging for wild apples. One of the best books I read in a long time.

Review: Not without humor, Andrew Brennan holds tightly to what might be called the humble aspects of making traditional cider. He sees himself as a glorified canner and dishwasher. Another thing he is: an excellent writer.

What Brennan does in his book about cider (Uncultivated) reminds me of the feat of the great Wendell Berry, who managed to write an amazing novel about a barber (Jayber Crow).

Brennan’s journey to traditional cider provides a unique window to art history, geologic history, and American history. Importantly, it provides an intimate window to his own life and the people around him. If he is a glorified canner, Cannery Row might be permissible for comparison to Uncultivated.

However tightly Brennan holds to the details and processes of traditional cider-making, his book is not a manual. There is tension in his writing that draws one along. Maybe part of the tension is an instinct toward what Nassim Taleb calls antifragility. Another part is certainly Brennan’s ability to honor what is humble about traditional cider-making by allowing readers to find a way to another descriptor: sublime.

Review: I really enjoyed this book. It is inspiring to read about someone so passionate about a true lost part of American culture. Especially as someone who appreciates good cider, I loved reading about the toll, and thought going into Andy's cider. Great read for any aspiring ciderist.

Review: Worth re-reading and drinking in deeply. A couple's journey from citified New York to working with nature's offerings for a deeper, more fulfilling, though not necessarily more lucrative lifestyle. The author's journey from our modern agricultural approach to one that joins with and celebrates interacting with the wild world makes for fascinating reading. His insights mesh with similar understandings being revealed from many different sources about the rich, deeper rewards that can be achieved by being in tune with complexities that about in raw nature all around us.

Title: Great Book!

Review: I really enjoyed this book, and I’m not really a cider guy (but would like to be one now). If you’re looking for mindless page-turner, this is not it. While it was a pleasure to read, I found that I had to take my time with this book, and I suspect that this is not a coincidence; there is a theme in this book that is about slowing down and smelling the apple blossoms (sorry, couldn’t help it). And not unlike cider-making, as Andy Brennan defines it, where rewards are rich, but not cloying, artificial, or immediate. There’s a lot to digest, and in a world where faster equals better, I had to remind myself that I’m not in a hurry. It’s not a long book, but it has depth. And value.

Andy artfully weaves together several focuses. It’s (1) a memoir about Andy’s journey from starving artist in New York City to country homesteader, (2) a deep-dive into the traditional cider world, (3) an expose on the corporate co-opting of the traditional cider market (via dishonest marketing), (4) a romance with the wild apple tree. And throughout, he riffs on culture and other topics with humor, originality, and color. Also, being a hybrid city-boy-turned-country-boy, he offers a refreshing, but increasingly rare, bridge between urban “progressives” and rural “conservatives”.

It’s no wonder Andy was/is an accomplished artist, as he’s created a masterpiece here, in my modest opinion. What he appreciates in a wild/feral apple cider —its depth, character, and importantly, its flaws—is similar to what I as a reader came to appreciate about the book: Andy has laid bare his aspirations, flaws, insecurities, struggles, and successes, and tells a beautiful and complex story of his journey, the apple tree, and the rich culture surrounding that world.

While I think everyone should read this book, I’d especially recommend it for people who:
• are considering quitting their job and starting their own business
• are considering moving out of the city/burb and into the country, perhaps to do some homesteading or to start an agricultural-based business
• enjoy cider/beer/wine, or are foodies, or would like to learn more about cider
• would like to know how their consumer choices affect their community and culture (buy local), and our future
• have an appreciation for nature and conservation. Or art!

It’s a challenging world for an uncompromising guy like Andy to inhabit, but he tells a hopeful and inspirational story that has me questioning my own practices and decisions, professionally, as a consumer, and otherwise.
