Review: This manual is the most thorough and detailed account of North American arachnids. Their is so much useful information in this manual that I am challenged to say that any one part stands out from other categories of arachnid ecology and identification. A truly excellent work on spider phylogeny.

Review: What this is: This manual is an indispensable resource for people studying spiders. It is a key to all currently-known genera of spiders in North America. This manual is the result of countless decades of work by biologists, distilled into dichotomous keys and helpful illustrations. This is intended to guide the reader through accurately determining the genus of an unknown spider specimen under a microscope. Note that this will only get you to genus - to make a specific determination you will still have to refer to primary literature. Each family-level chapter is edited by experts in that specific family of spiders. There are illustrations of palps, epigyna, and other anatomical features helpful in identifying spiders.What it's not: This is not intended to be a general interest book about spiders. While there is a lot of useful information here (particularly about anatomy, collection and storage, etc.) this book will be largely useless if you do not have (or intend to get) a microscope and physical spider specimens. Proper identification of spiders requires microscopic examination of physical specimens and a fairly detailed understanding of their anatomy. So this will not be useful for identifying spiders from photos (even very clear macro photos) or in the field. For that I would recommend a regional field guide or a website like BugGuide or iNaturalist. And be warned that spider identification from photos is hairy and sort of a best-guess kind of thing. Many/most spiders cannot be confidently identified to species or even genus from photos.If you (or someone you know) are interested in spiders and looking for a general interest book, I recommend these books, roughly in this order. These books all contain a wealth of useful information about spider behavior, ecology, habitats, etc. and would be good for any spider enthusiast at least high-school age:"Amazing Arachnids" by Jillian Cowles"Spiders of the World" by Norman Platnick"Common Spiders of North America" by Richard Bradley Hope this is helpful to someone who is looking at this page.

Review: Up front I am one of the authors (3 chapter authorships, 3 senior authorships and 4 junior authorships) and as such received a free copy. The effort of the 40 authors involved in producing this second edition was remarkable, and the work of our editors, Darrell Ubick, Pierre Paquin, and Paula Cushing (the late Vince Roth was included as the original idea and first few editions of the original keys were his) and main illustrator, Nadine Dupérré, was nothing less then heroic. I have been involved in this effort from the start as part of the American Arachnological Society Spider Genera of North America Revision Team (SGNART). The first edition was published in 2005, but much has happened since then, especially the revision of the "clubionoid" families by Ramirez, several major revisions of major groups or families, the description of a totally new family (Trogloraptoridae) and much added information on spider phylogeny. I was asked to work on this project by Paula Cushing of the Denver Museum of Nature and Science at the start of the development of the first edition. The concept of a manual to North American spider genera was initiated by one of my mentors and great friend, the late Vincent D. Roth, and it was he who produced three editions of the original "Spider Genera of North America." It was with great pleasure to be able to help continue the work that Vince started.This is not a picture book, but a technical manual, so it will be of more use to those who are seriously interested in spider identification. For those who want a solid manual with color habitus illustrations I highly recommend Rich Bradley's "Common Spiders of North America."While I can in no way judge my own contributions, those of my coauthors and of the authors of other chapters, and of our editors and illustrators were exemplary and I thus recommend this manual, especially to those who want to do serious work with spiders.

Review: This is a great technical introduction to North American families and genera for the serious microscopist, and a great teaching tool for those who want to learn spider taxonomy. I take off one star for three reasons: 1) The title "identification manual" is misleading as this cannot be used to identify species. BugGuide (online) is a more useful tool for that purpose, and in most cases one must still consult technical literature for identification. 2) The spiral binding, although it keeps pages open on the lab bench, is not very good if you want this to fit on the shelf with your other books. An earlier guide by Kaston ("How to Know the Spiders") is now out of date, but at least it did come in both bound and spiral bound versions. 3) The price puts this out of reach for all but the most serious students, precisely the group of people who also have access to the original literature.
