Review: This book works on three separate levels. One for the buyer, one for dad, and one for the son.

First the buyer gets to confront the issue that we need more organization and understanding on how things work and how to get along in society. This book says you need to know certain things in life to succeed. With little quotes and small anecdotes it illustrates, in an interesting and entertaining way, the different types of social skills needed for different types of situations. However, it also preaches a certain way of living that is engaged with the world and active, as opposed to becoming a passive self-absorbed individual which it warns against.

Second the dad gets to do something. Any father will tell you, and a good father I think will, always try to be involved and this book can give a first step in that direction for would be fathers, nervous fathers, old fathers, any father. The title of Rules for my Unborn Son makes this a book as much for the dads as the sons. The book offers a tangible reminder to fathers on what they are going to have to teach and pass down to their sons.

Third the son gets some help. I guarantee if you put this on any child's shelf at some point they will take it down and take it to heart. Clearly you can't rely on a book to raise your child, but it can be one helpful and tangible reminder of things you have tried to teach them.

This book works off the principle of nostalgia. That we have lost something. Just look at the yellow cloth cover with the 50s style print and picture, and the same design is on the inside. However, I think it says something far more subtle. Namely that we can learn from the past. That is what being a father is all about. A father uses his past experiences to help someone as much as he can. I think this is a good buy for a father, or son, or both.

Review: Love this book. Many years I had an eye on it and finally I have the hardcopy. At the introduction the author comment about "general speech" for freedom and he argues the rules are also good, not totally bad. One need to have in account that it was published first time in 2009, right away after the 2008 crisis. Probable reason why people claimed for freedom and the author was bringing some arguments of reasonably. After all, it is called "Rules..." but the author gives, actually, advices. Really nice book!

Review: This book was a quick read there are ~200 pages in the book, with an average of 2 quotes and\or short pieces of advice per page.

Ironically, some of the quotes are things that I find myself saying variations of on a daily basis to coworkers, friends and family.

I bought this book to give to my son when he is a bit older (he is currently 2), but I think all the advice in the book is solid and will help boys grow up into something that resembles a gentleman; rather than a boy who can shave.

My favorite quotes from the book are:
"Short pants are for little boys, decide for yourself when you are a man"
"Men should not wear sandals. Ever."
"Don’t pose with booze."
"Identify your most commonly used word or phrase, and eliminate it."

Review: I can't imagine anyone has a dad who could share all that's here (and who among us would actually listen if we did?), but I found myself laughing when I came across rules that reminded me of a bit of shared wisdom from my own father--and realized with a start there's probably a lot more he could teach me--if I'd only bother to listen, or to ask.

I bought a copy for my dad and plan on adding quick notes next to the rules he taught me that have really helped me along the way. If you have kids, it would be amazing to hand over a copy of this book with your own notes about the rules you think are the most valuable.

There's nothing quite like a father's wisdom--and Walker Lamond has distilled the best of it!

Review: Someone bought this for me when we were expecting our first boy, and I have since bought this book a few times for male friends expecting a son.

It is an inexpensive and thoughtful gift for any dad-to-be. Plus most of the one-liner advice is golden: when on a road trip with friends always offer to buy the first tank of gas!

Review: This has made a great bathroom book, providing short bursts of humor and insight without asking very much of its reader.

Each page contains one or two "rules" for the author's unborn son, meant to serve as guideposts on the boy's road to manhood. The rules are generally witty and playful, rather than deep or life-changing. Don't buy this as an instruction manual on how to raise a son, but purchase it to start you thinking about parenthood with a healthy serving of laughter along the way.
