Oil! tells the story of cast of characters revolving around the oil industry in 1920s America. The novel rolls through family and labor disputes, all with a strange group of millionaires, Communists, and preachers at the middle.

With Upton Sinclairโ€™s biting satire and characteristically-keen eye for the hypocrisies of his age, this novel not only provides a unique glimpse into the scandals of his time, including President Hardingโ€™s Teapot Dome Scandal, but offers a glimpse into timeless questions of greed, religion, politics, and family.

Oil! by Upton Sinclair Book Review

Title: Enjoy it for its economic and socio-political drama, but forget the characters.
Date: Reviewed in the United States on December 20, 2016
Review: You can see where Paul Thomas Anderson drew inspiration from Oil! to make his film, There Will Be Blood; however, you can list the similarities on one hand: 1) It is the story of an oil man (Dad) and his boy (Bunny). 2) There is a ranch that is key to the development of Dadโ€™s oil company. 3) Dad contends with larger oil companies. 4) Dad knows how to wheel and deal to get what he wants. 5) Like the Sunday family in the film, the Watkins family are religious, but too a much greater degree โ€“ they are โ€œjumpersโ€ that holler, speak and tongues, and roll around on the ground.

You will find other similarities, but the above are the most apparent. The differences are too many to list. The biggest deviations is the aspect of oil development that gets pushed aside in the latter half in favor of being a political think piece.

For some reviewers, the 2nd half is socialist propaganda. I donโ€™t know enough about the global conflicts and economic history of that era to make judgement as to whether Sinclair is posturing his personal views, or whether his negative views of capitalism were justified. Regardless, we are receiving this information from the view of Bunny who believes in socialism.

Another important distinction between the movie and book: Bunny is the main character instead of the father. Dad has far less character development and is less interesting than Daniel Day Lewisโ€™s character. They are both capitalist with strong anti-regulatory views, but Dad's the father-son conflict never really develops into something more interesting.

My major gripe with the novel is that it never goes beyond Bunnyโ€™s POV. We get to examine Bunnyโ€™s life as he grows into his role as instigator and โ€œpro-red sympathizer,โ€ but as you read into the last chapters of the book it all starts to feel familiar. Bunny argues his point. He gets his friends arrested. He complains about working conditions of oil workers. Then it repeats.

There are many more characters in the book than there are in the movie, but instead of giving them room to express their position, it all keeps falling back to Bunny. This is a problem because Bunny never makes a truly compelling argument.

All that is fine, however. The story was written in the 1920s so it's hard to gauge Sinclair's access to information about socialism. The lack of a truly compelling argument may be the result of how little his or anyone else understood about socialism.

Also, the book is a bit longer than I would have liked. The 2nd half feels slow because it is repetitive, but the saving grace is that I found Sinclairโ€™s writing to be accessible with the right amount of detail where needed. He does an impressive job of describing how oil fields are discovered and developed โ€“ I wouldnโ€™t know if this is accurate or not. His views of World War 1 have peaked my interest and I would like to learn more about the economic and political conflicts that served as a major point in the book.

If you enjoyed the economic aspects of There Will Be Blood, then you will probably enjoy Oil! If you rather read a dense character drama set against the backdrop of the oil boom in the early 1900s, then you might do well to read the first half and put the book down around the time when Bunny goes to college; or just watch the movie...

Title: Book A Dialogue, Movie a Monologue
Date: Reviewed in the United States on February 24, 2008
Review: "Oil!" can barely be said to be the basis of the movie "There Will be Blood." The movie is a new millennium monologue representation of a dialogue showing the struggle of two classes dramatized in the book. In "Oil!" the oil man's son is the vehicle for the struggle of ideas between his capitalist father and his worker-oriented union organizer friend, Paul. In a perfect caricature of present-day society, the movie entirely omits the working-class side of the debate which in the book is viewed through the eyes of the oil man's son. In a world where huge media corporations now dominate the worldwide flow of ideas, a world from which ideas favorable to the working person are entirely absent, the movie "There Will be Blood" takes a book which is about a dialogue between two classes and turns it into a monologue. In other words, the movie ripped out the guts of the book.
The really interesting questions in the book were entirely omitted such as:
In the book the father struggling against the huge oil companies---reflecting the fight of the medium and small business person to survive against huge corporate interests.
Most importantly, the son being friends with Paul, the radical labor organizer. This friendship and the pull of Paul's ideas places the "young oil prince" in a severe conflict with the circumstances of his birth, and that is the basic conflict of the book--entirely missing not only from the movie but from "mainstream" media. If you've seen the movie, the book becomes particularly interesting so you can see what is being withheld from you.
If you do decide to read the book, the prose is in an older historical style, not the style that flows from computers, so be ready to adjust to a different style. Also, there are some long paragraphs about how wooden oil derricks are constructed, and I recommend that you skip these unless you have some tremendous interest in wooden oil derricks of the past.

Title: MUST READ FOR ALL INTELLIGENT PEOPLE!
Date: Reviewed in the United States on July 4, 2017
Review: Great book! I have worked in the oil industry since 1958 and picked this to read as a romp; WOW, was I surprised - the book ostensibly is about oil (pre fracing), but the fictional characters are just a facade for the exposure of the business/political marriage behind the scenes. OIL was written in 1927; in 1957 Ayn Rand published ATLAS SHRUGGED, a novel, again with fictional characters, revealing the same corrupt merger of Big Business and Big Government.

Nothing further in 1987, but alas, 2017 has opened the curtain and exposed the manifestation of the political/business games written about by Sinclair and Ms. Rand. Being either innocent or niave, I thought the present horrible state in which we find ourselves had gradually come upon us, but it seems it started when we robbed the Native Americans and set up our own brand of corruption. Read this book and ATLAS SHRUGGED and determine if you want to continue to live in a world where your every effort is for the benefit of someone else!
