  Review: Through this humorous dive into the ancient and ubiquitous Unix text editor, you will come to understand and appreciate how powerful this underrated editor really is. Yes, really. The editor is cryptic only on its face, and this is just the book for you to crack the code in minutes and become an ed(1) master in mere hours. After reading this book and following its examples, you will know enough ed(1) to use it as a serious text editor. No joke, maybe even your main text editor. It's true: ed(1) is the standard text editor.

  Review: Most people these days who do editing in a terminal window use "vi" or some other distant descendent of this original UNIX text editor, "ed". Those who learned "ed" back when it was the only game in town still use it for quick fixes, because it's so simple and so fast. It's probably not worth learning it today in order to use it.
  
  However, reading this book IS useful for people who have no knowledge of "vi" or the other modern variants, because "ed" is so simple. This is what lies at the core of "vi". Trying to learn one of the huge, modern beasts from scratch is no simple task, but having this book under your belt, even if it was originally created as a conceit, is a very simple, clear path to learning all of the additions, extensions, frobs and knobs which have been added in the decades since.
  
  And, because this is Michael Lucas, it's very well-written. It also has a pleasant amount of snark.

  Review: I've enjoyed reading technical books by Michael. This book is no exception. His writing brings a certain ease and humor to your learning experience. Like you are learning from a friend.
  
  If you can open a command line terminal, you can follow this book. The book starts with the basics of text editing with ed and then moves on to topics I wasn't aware ed handled (I'd only used ed once many moons ago) like shell escapes and scripting (!). Regular expressions, as they work in ed, receive great treatment in this book.
  
  My first experience with ed was many moons ago and it was the only editor available on that system. It was not a good experience for me or ed. After reading this book, ed and I are on good terms.
  
  On a side note, while I understood a bit about ed, I never really thought about what it would be like to use such an editor back in the day. I can remember buying DOS compilers with an editor that didn't have the features or flexibility ed provided prior to these editors. It must have been quite the editor in its time. That said, the book sent me on a tangential journey of thought which I appreciated.
