Review: If you liked Dark, 1899, or The OA TV shows, you’ll probably like Briardark. It’s not the same (different format, horror-vibe ), but it defies expectations and IS mind-bending, especially in the story’s second half.

It also ends with a cliffhanger, but the sequel is on the way to the shelves in 2024.

Dr. Siena Dupont and her team explore the Alpenglow glacier for research. Things get tricky when they discover a hiker dangling from a tree. Normally, they would call the rangers at Deadswitch Wilderness, but their satellite phone isn’t working. And then the body vanishes. As if it had never been there. Siena’s map no longer aligns with the trail. It also seems the landscape changed slightly here and there.

The second important character, Holden, has wasted his potential working in IT at the university. The job doesn’t pay well, and his relationships suck. When he comes across old audio files on a discarded hard drive, he can’t resist the temptation to unravel the mystery. Dr. Siena Dupont recorded the files under huge stress and emotional turmoil. They give glimpses of the expedition and traumatic events, including the death of Dr. Siena’s colleague.

At first glance, the story seems familiar. A regular guy wants to solve a mystery (actually more than one, because another group of people has disappeared without a trace somewhere in the Deadswitch Wilderness). Things get complicated. Except that the author sets an ominous tone here and raises certain expectations that soon prove to be inaccurate. The story is much more complicated and mind-bending than expected, playing with time and twisting reality.

Briardark impressed me with the tight plotting and wide cast of compelling characters. While I had no clue where the story was going, I felt it was going somewhere instead of simply trying to confuse the reader. I didn’t get the resolution, but the way plotlines converge, I expect exciting things to happen in the sequel.

The story is packed with tension and credible characters that propel readers forward. But it also has some flaws: it offers no conclusion, and some characters are more interesting than others. I'm using the word mind-bending to describe it because I like mind-bending stuff (like the shows mentioned at the beginning of the post). Some readers, though, may call it confusing and DNF the story.

For me, Briardark was original and exciting, with good prose and great timing. I recommend it to fans of unsettling stories that push the genre's boundaries and readers of the uncanny.

Review: Likedit a lot. Was a slow start and kind of felt it went on almost too long. But I'm interested to see what happens next. It got pretty spooky towards the end which I really enjoyed.

Review: "She didn't care what they could or couldn't afford. It didn't matter if they ran out of water tomorrow or next week. The ending would be the same."

One of my favorite tropes in horrors are the "lost expedition", or anything in the woods, and lost media, so I was so excited when I started this. The book is told in ultiple POV's, we get the main researcher in the group, Siena Dupont, and the IT-guy who found the lost files from the expedition, Holden. In between the chapters there are excerpts from the fictional book "Without A Trace" by John Lawson, detailing the case of five missing people, last seen on their way to Deadswitch Wilderness, which is an element I really like in a book. This is pitched as a cosmic horror which isnt usually a horror sub-genre I read, but I loved this book,

The characters are well developed and you feel for them almost right off the bat. They all have their own unique characteristics that makes them feel real and fleshed out. The LGBTQ+ rep in this book is great, Cameron is openly gay, and Holden expresses his demi-sexuality on page.
The writing flows nicely on the page, the pace is nice and it didnt feel rushed or drawn out, and iI just wanted to keep reading, The book is atmospheric, its almost like you feel like you're right there with them, the creepiness just seeps off the pages.

I had an amazing time reading Briardark and I will definitely buy the finished version. I'm looking forward to reading book 2, Wayward in 2024. This is a 4,5 from me!

Review: First, this ends in a cliffhanger and it appears there is no second book yet. I would have rated the book a rare five stars had it been complete.
I read this in one day and feel as though I lived it. The story flows and the timelines work together seamlessly. I felt the characters were believable and really connected with them. It is unlike any book I've read and I loved it.

Review: What a cliffhanger! There are three stories that are intertwined in this book. Years ago a research party gets lost in the Deadswitch Wilderness. A new research party is hiking through and exploring this same wilderness. An IT guy finds some audio recordings that ties into one of these research parties. There’s a supernatural element here that is creepy and intriguing at the same time. I can’t wait until the next book comes out because I’m so invested in this story.

Review: This book should be WAY more popular right now!!

Book 1 in a series leaves us on the edge of our seats, wanting more and rightly so! Suspense, eery setting, time and space warped and manipulated, horror, and more. This is the first modern horror book I've read in years that checks all the boxes for what I'm looking for. Harian has left some amazing breadcrumbs for what's to come and I can't wait for the next book!

But seriously people, read this book soni can talk with more people about my theories because I'm dying over here. Can't wait for book 2, SA Harian!!
