Title: .0 out of 5 stars Great & Biblical devotional
Date: Reviewed in the United States on December 22, 2021
Review: My 9 year old son & I do this devotional every morning in carpool before school. It is so great & his faith has truly grown. There hasn’t been a single one that made me want to skip. I think it’s very Biblically based & great for his age. I got this for him for Christmas 2020 & ordered the other one this year!

Review: Awesome book for introducing young guys to personal devotion. I still have a copy of this series from my older boys(now 17 &21) Purchased this for my surprise blessing (now age 9). He loves that he can read it himself and enjoys the activity pages. Devotion during breakfast is such a pleasure. While revisiting the older boys' book, I was able to remind them of their answers to questions that are very relevant for them even today. This series is definitely timeless. Love it!

Title: .0 out of 5 stars daily devo for summer break
Date: Reviewed in the United States on July 7, 2013
Review: I like this devotional. I needed something for my twin boys (turning 6 in August) to do each day during summer break. They are good readers, but one needs a little help still. They both still need help with the writing part. The love doing the activity at the end. After they do their devotional I have them do their reading for their summer reading log, usually for 20 minutes. It breaks up the day nicely while our almost 2-yo naps. Next summer I'll get Gotta Have God II, when they're about to turn 7, and the following summer I'll get Gotta Have God III, then they'll be closer to 8. I think next summer they'll be able to do it all by themselves.

Title: .0 out of 5 stars Used for a year, not buying again
Date: Reviewed in the United States on January 10, 2013
Review: We used this as part of our homeschool curriculum for a year. This is a great devotion for kids who are really in tune with God, or for parents to do with their kids. It asks a lot of questions about tangible ways God works in the life of the child ("How has Jesus shown himself to you?"), & though these are all great questions - I feel like they're a tad old for 6-9 year olds. Our son is 8, & is a believer on his own, but has a very difficult time answering these questions by himself. Definitely a discussion-type devotion. It's also disheartened our son a bit - he wants to physically SEE Jesus, the way The 12 did. When this devotion uses Bible stories about Jesus & his friends (surprising his friends while they were fishing - after he was crucified), & then the follow-up question is "How was Jesus surprised you with His presence?", my son's heart hurts & longs for tangible relationship with Jesus, the man. I know a lot of people will probably say "You should have done more" or "What are great opportunity to talk, heal, disciple your child", & yes, that is true. We may come back to this devotion in a year or 2, but for now, we are finding another option, something less subjective.

Title: .0 out of 5 stars Moralism, Sloppy Theology, Returned.
Date: Reviewed in the United States on July 11, 2020
Review: Like most people buying this book, I was searching for something to help my son practice spending time in the word each day, and liked that there were journaling pages which invites active participation. However, when this book arrived (and the girl version for my daughter), I flipped through checking the theology and was disheartened. Each page is essentially a bible verse, often without context, and then a fictitious story or situation. The lesson of many entries is simply moralism and being good because God loves you, not the gospel (sin, repentance, salvation, discipleship). The goal of the Christian life is not to be good for God and go to heaven. It is a renewed heart, living to bring glory to God and making disciples. I just couldn’t give this to my kids. I included some prime photo examples...Abraham is white with blonde hair, to begin. Example 2: The application here is Jesus sitting on top of a barn...the question “what can you do to work hard for Jesus before he returns?” Ugh. We cannot earn Gods favor, we can not “work hard enough” to be “good enough” - that’s a works based faith - aka not the gospel of the Bible. This book so often misses the gospel and focuses on “being good and doing the right thing”. It sets our kids up for failure because we can never be good enough for a holy God apart from the saving grace of Jesus. Plus, Jesus sitting on a barn watching you...weird. Last example: Jesus as superhero..with ripped muscles in a tight suit, holding hands and winking at the boy. Creepy. Jesus doesn’t wear a cape, he cannot be compared to a superhero. He IS GOD as man.
I get that the writers are probably well intentioned and want to reach kids but the theology here is so sloppy, and sloppy theology leads to a weak foundation and false understanding of God that such “faith” falls to pieces as soon as children (or adults) hit real world problems. I am a pastors wife and children’s ministry director with a heart to teach our kids a rock solid faith on the entirety of Gods word and this watered down junk just makes me sad, I see how it affects people. There are so many better, rich, kids devotionals our there! A couple to check out: Indescribable by Louie Giglio / Grace for the Moment by Max Lucado or read through “My Own Keepsake Bible” together and color the pages as you go! Also check out “Helping Children to Understand the Gospel” by Truth78. Empower yourself to learn the cultural lies that sneak into our kids lives and read Mama Bear Apologetics. All on Amazon! Take it or leave it, I know everyone has different opinions, but that was my two cents as a mom who returned this book.

Title: .0 out of 5 stars More for the 9 than the 6 but still love it!
Date: Reviewed in the United States on May 12, 2013
Review: Easy to follow, really designed for boys. The flow of some of the stories seem to be more challenging for a 6yr old (my son is 6) and more appropriate for a 9year old i dont think that is a negative. My son reads the topic for the day and attempts the follow on questions. When its beyond him most times it represents an opportunity to challenge him to the next level. He is really learning more about God while challenging his brain at the same time. Still love it!
