Review: As a teacher, I benefit from the reflections of others on how to do it better. Along with Parker Palmer, Stephen Brookfield offers much helpful guidance in this book. Not only does identifying and scrutinizing our own assumptions help us to teach better by inviting students to see the powerful influence of assumptions, but it helps us in our own research and growth as teachers. As a long time student, many professors I've had are brilliant and know a lot of information, but few are pedagogically aware and most are unable to submit their own assumptions to critical analysis. Brookfield invites us to do so and guides us on how to do so.
One particular dimension of this book that has served me well as a teacher is the Critical Incident Questionnaire (CIQ). What I love about this simple, anonymous survey is that it provides clear insight into how students experience my teaching. While I can "read" a room, that is partial information. The CIQ has surprised me on numerous occasions in which I thought I was "bombing" a teaching session. At the very point that I thought I was failing, numerous students gave feedback that suggested the opposite. The CIQ alone is worth the price of the book.

Review: This is the second Brookfield book that I have read, after starting with his revised edition of The Skillful Teacher (2015).
After describing the importance of this kind of reflection, Brookfield begins by exploring myths we can subscribe to that will hinder our ability to be a critically reflective teacher. He then outlines four lenses we can use to inform our reflection: students’ perceptions, colleagues’ impressions, our own experience, and what the research tells us.
Brookfield demonstrates a kind of transparently rarely conveyed in our sharing about becoming more effective in our teaching. As I read, I felt such kinship with him, as he shared his struggles of self flagellation. In my own desires to be a “great” teacher, it can seem like a lonely road.
Having someone who conveys such similar challenges as my own was quite helpful, both in terms of knowing that my concerns are common, but also by providing practical ways to reflect in different ways and take actions to develop my teaching even further.
This is a book I will revisit often, as a teacher and also as a faculty developer.

Review: As a non-expert when it comes to teaching and teaching theory, I was initially a little nervous about working through this book, but I found Brookfield's tone to be welcoming and his ability to explain complex concepts to be very helpful. I read this book as preparation for launching an adult education initiative at the church that I work at and I found that many of the ideas that Brookfield were applicable to myself and the other folks who will be teaching in our initiative. Two things stood out most prominently to me I read through this work, the need to constantly examine our preconceived notions about education and how important it is to have a health feedback loop from colleagues and students.
The idea that we need to constantly examine our preconceived notions about education is something that shouldn't be all that innovative but I was drawn to thinking through how those notions could appear to the students I'm teaching. Brookfield made an excellent point when he talked about how the democratization of a classroom can actually hurt students who already don't have a voice rather than help them. That really cut to the core for me and pushed me to begin to think through how my actions and decisions as a teacher come across to the students that I'm teaching. Another one of Brookfield's example is how in his effort to encourage self-directed learning some of his students were frustrated because they felt that he had abandoned his position as the resident expert on the subject. I think that constantly evaluating why we're doing something and providing justification for it, just like Brookfield says, is such a powerful tool in assisting in facilitating the learning of our students.
The need for a specifically healthy feedback loop is so important and something that continuously comes through this work. It's important to emphasize the health aspect of the loop because getting feedback from students and colleagues can be both beneficial and also terribly harmful. As Brookfield notes, it's too easy to get stuck into groupthink or to allow oneself to be devastated by a particularly harsh review, and so in light of that having a healthy feedback loop where one can take the thoughts and opinions of students and colleagues into account is crucial. One of the major points that Brookfield hits on constantly throughout the book is that by having a group of trusted colleagues one can both vent and request help with issues that they may have encountered already. On the topic of seeking student perspectives, receiving feedback and beginning a class session by addressing them can be such a powerful approach as it allows for one to make alterations to the class itself as it goes and it builds trust with the students, who now know that it's safe to offer criticism of the instructor.
All in all I'd say this is an incredibly helpful work for anyone who is looking to teach, regardless of the setting. While Brookfield writes for and from an academic background, I imagine this work would be helpful for those who are teaching in high school or who are teaching in non-academic settings.
