Title: Practical and useful

Review: There is a certain charm that comes with collections of essays. A reader is briefly able to sample a wide array of thoughts and experiences from a host of people who have unique perspectives. Each essay functions as a new insight or a new contact with a previously unknown individual. It is a snapshot into a world that is completely unique: some charming, some surprising, some enlightening, and some inexplicable. The reader cannot help but become a better person through the experience.

The collaborative book Partnering with God is no exception. This collection of essays focusses on life with God: partnering with God (a concept we should not take lightly). The essays focus on how the human element of life interacts with the divine world around us. There is a diversity of opinion, and not wholly consistent in perspective, but each essay adds a layer of reality to the world around us.

Within the book are grains of philosophical insights:

“This new chapter—the emergence of human consciousness—seemed to produce a new intensity of both good and evil. Human history includes both beauty and horror, love, and violence.” - Andre Rabe

The human element indeed does add intensity to good and evil. Within the Bible God does focus on man as a curiosity. What will man do? How far will man rise? How far will he fall? The extreme capability for both good and evil overshadow any natural or creaturely capacity. There is something unique that human intent adds to any event, from even a simple hug to a random act of violence. Multiple essays explore these thoughts: what does it mean to be human?

But perhaps the greatest strength of this book is the advice for practical living:

“Life can be unbearably difficult and challenging, and yet when we resist the way things are, that resistance always creates stress and anxiety within us. To say “yes” to life is to remain open and surrendered to God, even when our logic has failed us. This is where true peace can be found. What could be more pointless than to oppose life? When we say yes to life, things start working for us rather than against us.” - Danny Prada

This is surprisingly good practical advice, advice we can use to help us live a happier life. Accepting the world and adapting with eagerness to life’s changes creates real peace. There is some “anecdotal” evidence this is true. From “Science shows that luck is a self-fulfilling prophecy”:

“Wiseman posits that feeling unlucky creates fear and anxiety, which in turn makes us less likely to see opportunities. Lucky people are, to some degree, those who keep their eyes, minds, and hearts open, making themselves available for fortune.” (Ephrat Livni, Quartz August 17, 2018)

Correlation, causation, and reverse causation are always hard to determine definitively, but in my own life things always seem to work out for the best. Every day I tell everyone that today is an amazingly good day and every day it is. Our thoughts are not independent of our environment but help shape the world around us.

Other essays in the book cover topics such as self-reflection, withdrawal, even hospitality. A striking heartbreaking essay gives advice about helping a Grandmother who has Alzheimer’s. Each essay has something to say and something worth considering. If nothing else, this book will loose the bonds of rigid Classical thinking.

If the intent of this book is to reshape the way we frame the world around us, it succeeds. Too often moderns see the world as cause and effect, as mechanical processes, as fatalistic. We live in a culture which embraces this fatalism. Even Christians will brag in their solace in knowing God controls everything, that everything is determined. They fail to see the world as organic, taking shape through collective decision, God working through people and with people to create the future. The essays within Partnering with God work well to help us envision the world with a more Biblical light.

Review: My church's book club chose this as it's first book. I think it will be a turn off to many people. The essays are very complicated and deep and better suited to theology students and not average people. The takeaways are not easy to find.

Title: A grand adventure

Review: A beautifully-done project, from the concept, design and editing of the book to the community of dedicated thinkers it brings together. Their thoughts on what it means to work WITH God in what God is doing in this world, and their experiences of living out this "partnership" will inspire, give hope, and can open the readers' hearts and minds to new possibilities. As John B. Cobb, Jr. wrote in his essay contribution, "To the extent that we partner with God, new possibilities for partnering emerge." And as Bob Luhn wrote in his essay, "...knowing that God was inviting me out of love to partner with God in blessing people has made my life a grand adventure." We agree!
