Title: Marvelous!

Review: OPEN RANGE the movie and OPEN RANGE the book are really not the same story, although Kevin Costner's movie was "based on" Lauran Paine's book. Someone recently turned us on to the DVD of the Costner movie, which my wife and I viewed one evening, and the next decided to watch the bonus features, and the third night again watched the movie. We're pretty persnickety about how we spend the precious little free time we have, so for us to watch a movie twice is an acknowledgement that the story, casting, acting, scenery, and the rest of what goes into producing a quality film were in our shared opinion the perfect ticket for an enjoyable evening's entertainment. Two evenings, actually. That we'd not heard of this work is an indication of how little we pay attention to such things, and how seldom we're likely to be found in a movie theater. (We do have an extensive DVD library though, and will no doubt watch the Costner, Duvall, Bening et al. saga many times. It's simply that visually exciting, with a capitivating story line.)

The book, however, is truly a different story, an excellent one, in basically the same setting and including the same characters. However, circumstances and events shown in the film become in the book first-person experiences in the mind of the reader, often in more lasting detail than it is possible to capture within a 140-minute movie, even one as spectacularly beautiful as the one Costner has created from the book. Paine's writing is clean, inviting and powerful, page after page after page. Not one sentence is unnecessary, not one moment of your read will be wasted. And yes, this is a work you'll find yourself reading several times over, just as the movie is one to watch again and again.

So treat yourself OPEN RANGE the book AND the DVD. You'll enjoy the read, you'll enjoy the film, and you'll agree that together they're worth TEN stars!

Title: A Surprisingly Great Western Novel

Review: After having seen the movie of the same name countless times, it dawned on me to read the book that it was taken modeled after. I was not disappointed, in fact I was thrilled with the humanity of the 2nd half of the novel and the turn of events not in the movie. A wonderful read that I recommended to my wife. The characters are full and rich in my opinion, with a generous amount of kindness and depth.

Title: The Open Range Men

Review: Keven Costner's movie "Open Range" was based on this novel. I found it to be a highly enjoyable read and the detail the author puts into his story line is compelling. If you like Westerns, this should be added to your list of must reads. It details the tension that developes as society changes, moving from the expansive wide open ranges as America moved west to the "intrusion" of communities that slowly closes off the open range. The two primary characters realize they are part of a dying breed- Open Range Men - much in the same respect as the frontiersman who came before them. Paine beautifully describes the life of open range men, what draws them to it and what keeps them in it despite the hardships, the sufferings and the loneliness. Who among us has not dreamed of riding the saddle beneath vast expanses of blue sky, bedding down next to a glowing fire while a million stars filled the heavens? Who has not dreamed of the utter simplicity of the open range.

Title: Better than the movie.

Review: The narrator, Barrett Whitener was very good. I loved the movie. I must have watched it 50 times. Mostly because of Kevin Costner and Robert Duvall. The book and the movie are completely different except for character names and a few incidences in the story. Both very good. It doesn't bother me that Charlie waite shot 12 times without reloading. It was a good story. I was very surprised at who died at the end of the book though. 6 cd's, not one scratch.

Title: One of the most realistic cowboy westerns around

Review: Lauren Paine sure has an inate understanding of not only the western cowboy period, but of how life was lived and how men felt and acted during that range in America's history. I rank his book "Open Range" as highly as I rank such greats as "Lonesome Dove," "Broken Trail," and "Dances with Wolves."
When I saw the movie "Open Range" based on this novel, I was glad to see actors Robert Duvall and Kevin Costner do the book justice - the book and the film stay true to one another.
Paine's novel rings true to history in every detail - what men wore, how they worked, what kinds of guns they carried, and how they used them. This novel features the most realistically played out gunfight I've ever read - or saw, in the film.
I highly recommend this novel to cowboy western enthusiasts.

Title: Not as Compelling as the Movie

Review: Perhaps this book started out with a disadvantage for me in that I came to it because I saw and enjoyed the movie first. The book is much more mundane and lacks the mythic resonance achieved by the Kevin Costner directed film. As others here have noted, the screenplay dramatically departs from the characterization of the Charlie Waite character as found in the book while the book's denouement lacks the massive, bloody and life-changing gun battle which gives the film its sense of power and gravitas. On balance, I found the book okay but not particularly compelling or memorable. Of course I have a few bones to pick with the film's screenplay as well, which went on much too long, drawing out the dramatic ending until one barely cared anymore. Costner would have been better off ending strongly, right after the showdown and the destruction it unleashed. Lauran Paine, author of this novel, would have been better off if he could have achieved the sense of mythic resonance the film somehow managed to tease out of this somewhat ordinary tale of conflict between a rich and ruthless cattleman and a couple of unaffiliated cowboys just passing through.
