Review: The first half was good, very educational and well-written. I appreciate and respect Patagonia’s efforts to stay true to their beliefs and their environmental practices. But later on, he starts to get really preachy and even goes so far as to criticize some of his own employees for not “trying” to save the planet because they still wear jeans and drive SUVs. Maybe they have 4 kids and can’t afford a new Tesla? Maybe they’ve already eradicated as much single-use plastic from their home and lives as they could and are carpooling with another family? Maybe they are doing the best they can, and that is certainly more than doing nothing at all. Every little bit helps.He also bashes political conservatives and people of religion as well, lumping them into a single category of nature-haters, and spouts that Patagonia’s support of Planned Parenthood is one of the biggest ways they’re helping the planet - by reducing overpopulation. Whatever readers believe about abortion in general, there seems to be a line between environmental activism to help protect our lands and waterways, and involvement in social and political affairs. How many millions have gone into this and similar issues that could have gone toward some of our national parks?There was a lot in this book that I found admirable and agreeable, but by the end I was so disappointed with Chouinards attitude that I no longer feel inclined to shop at Patagonia before going elsewhere. Surely there are other companies out there using sustainable production practices who aren’t just as big and lofty as every other major corporation.

Review: While I agree with the vast majority of the environmental postures of the author I find his position as an owner of a for profit B Corp on a global scale hypocrisy. While he touts a 1% sin tax to compensate for the ecological damage his firm promotes their continued mass production and globalist policies are much the same as “non-environmentalist” practices. There are some golden nuggets of truth with regard to employee practices - ie don’t work for a firm you don’t believe in, childcare local to the parent, and showers in the offices. But I have a really tough time believing a guy who writes that he hates the corporate culture but leads a large corporation. His thinking that he is somehow “different” is a symptom of the entitlement driving many of the really bad business decisions made by people who came of age in the late 1960s. The dichotomy is obvious to external observers but denied by the observed. I think the eco friendly posturing is just marketing to get “the dirtbag” (author’s words) to keep being the core of his customer base.

Review: I loved this book so much. I loved the way Yvon talks us through his own personal history, and walks us through the history of the company. The sweet anecdotes about creative problem solving (i.e. How do you get a retailer who is very behind on payments to settle up? Send their next order (of scrap metal) COD)) were my favorite parts. I also loved being able to read the mission statements, particularly the one the senior team member cobbled together over lunch while they were on a retreat in Patagonia. I loved the way the book was written in conversational English. And I loved the excerpts from ads and the excerpts from that Alpine Climber's magazine. Such beautiful writing!One note to Yvon/Patagonia suppliers: The commercial wool industry is BRUTAL. I like that you're selling recycled wool sweaters, and would love to see you totally abandon any partnerships with commercial wool farmers. In order to sheer sheep at a rate that's profitable (most get paid per sheep rather than by the hour) they have to hurry through the sheering process. That means lots of cuts for the sheep. Plus there are some types of sheep that are prone to parasites in the folds of their rear. In order to combat that, farmers simply slice off a chunk of that area so there are no longer folds. OUCH. Again, commercial wool farmers, BAD.Sorry, I got off on a tangent. I loved this book. It held my attention all the way through. I had trouble putting it down, actually. Yvon's voice is very sweet and actually has inspired me to ask myself, am I doing all I can for the environment? AND am I working at a job/in an industry that I'm proud of? Could I be doing something more fulfilling (for my own quality of life, and the environment?).

Review: I run a business, and have always struggled to reconcile the growth of my company with the the protection and regeneration of the environment. I know the facts about what we are doing to the planet, yet I also knew that the products and services I had to offer were valuable to people and had a positive impact on their lives. This book gave me a vision for fusing the two. For seeing my desire for growth and quality and productivity as a lever that I can use to also make our home more livable and sustainable. Patagonia’s example is a shining beacon that we all increasingly need to look to as a model.

Review: If not for its literary eloquence or sophistication, this is a precious read for the sobering lessons on environmentalism that too many of us can use more reminders on. Personally I find the arguments for minimalism and simplicity helpful, and they tie in perfectly with the overall tones of the book - living responsibly both as individuals and as a society. Every choice we make as a consumer has a consequence that's not necessarily reflected by its price tag, and it's something we should all be aware of. Thanks Yvon for sharing your wisdom!

Review: Beginning was interesting, certainly a unique philosophy on business, culture and working with people.Overly preachy for the second half of the book, covering some of the same ground over and over. I still learned from it, changed a little of my perspective, but not what I had expected.This did make me respect Patagonia as a company though, and for some, I think they'll find a lot of validation in this book for sustainable practices.
