Review: This is a fascinating, very readable book. Hilmes has written a series of vignettes for each of the 16 days of the 1936 Olympics in Berlin. The focus is not really on the athletic competition, though we learn details about some of the best moments at the games such a Jesse Owens winning four gold medals. Instead, most of the vignettes record activities in Berlin and beyond that reveal the Nazis’ efforts to show visitors the illusion of a peaceful, contented society and to conceal the reality of the mounting campaign against Jews and other non-Aryans, political dissidents, and homosexuals. While visitors and members of German high society attend lavish parties hosted by Nazi leaders or spend evenings at nightclubs where jazz is still performed, a few miles away residents identified as Gypsies by the Nazis have been confined to a squalid temporary camp and not far away a new concentration camp is under construction. The violently racist Nazi newspaper Der Stürmer is temporarily not available in Berlin, but Hilmes includes daily reports from State Police records showing that, behind the scenes, Nazi racial policies are still being forcefully carried out. Among the many fascinating characters that Hilmes profiles in a simple, elegant style is American writer Thomas Wolfe, who at first believes the Nazi charade staged for his benefit but ultimately discovers the truth, which he later described in an account published in the magazine “The New Republic” and then incorporated in his book “You Can’t Go Home Again.” Based on extensive research, Hilmes tells stories in the present tense from the perspective of his real-life characters with a novelist’s gift for the right detail. In the last chapter, he reveals what happened to them later in their lives after the Olympics. I’m not sure that I would have wanted to plow through a long chronicle on this topic, but, at 270 pages, the book was a very enjoyable read.

Review: I actually liked this book, which I read during the last Winter Olympics. Interesting angles were taken on the events which took place during the very historically controversial world event. I had initially some reservations, by really have enjoyed racing through the book which is very readable.

Review: I was disappointed in this book. While it had a lot of information about Berlin and its residents during 1936, there was very little about the actual olympics and their impact. For an American, I would expect a bit more about Jessie Owens and the Boys in the Boat who won the premiere crew race.

Review: This is a compelling historical story, full of rich material. But the decision to write it in the present tense (rather than the past tense) really detracts from the story. I am in the midst of finishing this book, but found the use of present-tense narrative very off-putting ... an increasingly-resorted to, contrived literary feature to, I suppose, make the story more compelling to today's generation of younger readers who seemingly have a hard time absorbing history and relating to anything other than contemporary events within their own brief lifespans. The forced "you are there" narrative ("Adolf Hitler is sitting at the breakfast table. He seems worried. He looks out the window and sees his car. He walks to the window ...") is an odd way to tell history, and puts the author into the role of the in-room observer, telling the story from the perspective of a detached, yet somehow involved, participant. That's how errors in historical narrative occur. Good history is told by historians who acknowledge that the past is the past ... not some event that happened last week that we can "tweet" about to each other like gossip. This book was a good try, but it is compromised by its literary technique.
