Review: The Love Hypothesis is rom-com all the way. It starts out with a kiss, develops into a fake relationship (for all the best reasons) and graduates to something much more. Funny, charming and heartwarming, the book has everything that should be included in a rom-com.

Each chapter starts with a hypothesis that may not be very scientific or even be provable, but will inevitably be verified by events in Olive’s life. Helping her to prove those hypotheses are her graduate school friends and Dr. Adam Carlsen.

Adam is not known as a warm human being. “Destroyer of research careers” has been said about him. There are reasons he is the way he is, though it will take the whole book for Olive to figure it out. Suddenly kissing Adam in the hallway (without realizing who she was kissing) puts Olive in Adams sights. Which could be very good or could be very bad.

There is a lot of uncertainty which has Olive and Adam thinking that they are truly fake dating. Of course, their friends and the readers know the truth – they are falling for each other. It will take 356 pages, a science geek conference and a bad man doing bad things to get them to collaborate the same research project.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, probably because it reminded me of my own graduate school days, right down to the conference with all the geography geeks. Even if you didn’t do the grad school thing, you can’t help but fall for Olive, who really wants her friends to be happy, but wouldn’t mind being happy herself!

I’ve got to share my favorite quote – this is for the women reading this. When Olive’s advisor, Dr. Aslan, is encouraging her right before her conference presentation she says, ‘Carry yourself with the confidence of a mediocre white man.’ I think you know exactly what Dr. Aslan is talking about. 😊

Ali Hazelwood has several contemporary romcom novels about women in STEM and academia, though not technically a series, if you enjoy The Love Hypothesis, you will probably enjoy her other STEMinist books.

Review: Olive is a grad student in the STEM program focusing on testing new theories on pancreatic cancer treatments. Doctor Adam Carlsen is a broody, tall, hunk of a professor. After an awkward meet, they discover they can help each other out by “fake dating” for a few months. Olive needs to convince her roommate she’s welcome to date Olive’s ex and Adam needs a girlfriend to help show he’s not leaving Stanford and deserves the money from the research grant that’s being held.

This is a grumpy/sunshine, fake dating, sweet story of two people totally opposite but over time, they see behind the initial appearances and start a mutual friendship. Add in Olive’s awkwardness and lies due to her fear of letting Adam close, some miscommunicated feelings, plus Adam’s friend/working colleague’s betrayal and you have one heck of an entertaining story.

I enjoyed all of the characters, including Olive’s friends/peer scientists and Adam’s best friend and fellow professor, Holden. They all play a part in Olive and Adam’s romance which you’ll root for from the very beginning.

Review: I’ve read so many Reylo stories online. So many wonderful troupes and au’s, cannon stories, so many…yet I’ve been slow to getting around to reading the one that has brought Reylo fanfiction into the mainstream! Much like 50 Shades Of Grey, and The Beautiful Bastard series did for twilight fanfiction.

Ali took her story and turned it into a fantastic, hilarious, romantic, sexy, scientific story that stands on its own two feet. Not only giving readers a delightful romantic comedic experience but also highlighting women in STEM, and the unfortunate prejudices they still face. But as a great romance will do, it also highlights the deliciously complex, sexy, fierce and adorable men and women, who champion them!

What’s not to love!!!

Review: Olive, a PhD student, has her theories and hypotheses on love. But the laws of attraction prove to be stronger when she gets into a fake dating arrangement with Adam, a young professor at her school.

Fake dating trope was a really fun spin on the story. You know when the main characters have a dating arrangement, chances are it will not go as planned 😆 It was fun watching Olive and Adam fall for each other. The book is really funny, nerdy-smart and sexy. Made me feel old at times through, as I felt the dialogues and the conversation topics were geared more at a younger audience.

Grumpy and Sunshine trope made this book so fun to read. I enjoyed all the endearing banter and plot twists. Loved the fact that the characters were both so vulnerable, yet they learned to trust each other and their own feelings. It was great to see the author address the issues of women in STEM and present a heroine who grew stronger navigating through the hurdles of that environment.

I would greatly recommend this book to those who are looking for a romcom set in academia, diverse romantic reads and deadpan dry sense of humor. Can't wait to read more from this author!
