Title: Warning: Contains Religious Material

Review: I wish someone would have warned me that this is not a purely scientific book. It is a mix of religion and science. I only read the first 4-6 pages. I was looking for a book on how thermodynamics influences life. I am not interested in how to reconcile religion with science. If that is your thing, then this book is for you. If you want pure science, then beware.

Title: Great overview of a complex subject

Review: The material covered is 5 star quality, but he stopped shorter than he needed to keep lay people involved but still stretch into advanced ideas. I wanted to write a review because I’m afraid many will be waived off by the religious critiques. I wasn’t interested in the religious content, but it only comprises less than 10% of the book and is easily ignored (skim the beginning, each chapter but the last only has religious stuff in the last couple of pages. Then just ignore the final chapter. I have been following complexity science since the 1980s (Prigogine, et al) and I found England’s work an important advance in the missing link to physics. The book makes these advances accessible to most people. It is precise and avoids the usual oversimplifications. If you are technically adept, you can read his papers, get it all plus some, without the Bible lesson. If not, get this book and passover (pun) the easily excised religious content.

Review: I don't want his religion shoved down my throat in a physics book. It beggars belief that a scientist, (and a physicist at that), even holds on to these beliefs let alone is willing to inappropriately shoehorn them into a book about physics. It is an absolute violation of the scientific method. Truly disgusting.

Edit: I should say, that without the inappropriate religious interjections, this book would get a five-star rating. I agree that this is one of the most important and momentous theories in physics. It's just a shame that it is being tarnished with a religious brush in this book.

Title: Major Disappointment/Waste of time

Review: Wow, what a disappointment. First book in a long time (verrrry long time, as in, "I cannot remember ever") that I threw away. Garbage. Waste of time. BORING; and I'm the kind of guy interested in science and, well, everything! This is a total mess. Did I say it was "boring?" It is a well-written (grammatically-correct and complete sentences) waste of time. Out of respect, I stuck with it, to the very end. Somehow, I reasoned, he was going to get better; make a point; GET INTERESTING. Nope. Save your money, your time, and your patience.

Review: Excellent book! I noticed that some reviewers did not like the book because it somehow offended their 'scientific sensibilities'. In my opinion they either did not bother reading past the introduction or did not understand what they were reading. I suspect it's a mixture of both plus some arrogance thrown in for good measure.
Less than 5% of the book discusses religion but that didn't stop them from bashing the author.
If you enjoy biology, physics, chemistry or biblical interpretations, you will enjoy this book.

Title: Integrates Senses, Science & Humanities to Understand Time Immemorial to Today & Beyond

Review: My favorite book to combine physics and the humanities (anthropology & religion are parts of the humanities in my opinion). I would roughly estimate it's 4:1 on-easy-to-understand concepts in physics vs humanities. Great gift for those interested in science and not allergic to religion. Illuminating for the open-minded!

England humbly traverses domains of biology, physics, and humanities (of which anthropology and religion are parts in my humble opinion) to explore the meaning of life, its significance, and its origins all while linking his ideas to cornerstones in our common understanding. These cornerstones include Darwinian survival of the fittest, Newtonian mechanics, Einstein's relativity, and commonplace understandings such as balls rolling down hills, snowflakes (my fav!), water turning to ice, how a virus spreads, and other relatable thought experiments.

Dissipation-driven adaptation is a breakthrough in physics for the same reasons this book will irk skeptics who are opposed to his approach. The integrated intelligentsia of the modern era, such as Jeremy England, boldly compare and contrast valid viewpoints (even across languages) to form resilient theories about how the world works, while safe-space-cadets willingly remain uncomfortably ignorant in siloed sandboxes.

Incorporating truths we take for granted into a larger physics framework, for me, exposed patterns in our world that I have heretofore missed. I appreciate dissipation-driven adaptation and this book for clarifying an expansive theory for how the world works - one as valid in the realm of science, as it is in economics and human behavior!

Title: Interesting and insightful

Review: This book is original and innovative in a lot of ways. England explores the origins of life and finds inspiration in both science and religion. While the title does not give away the strong religious component to the approach, England is very forthcoming with his intentions in the introduction. I am not religious, but the discussion of the Bible did not spoil the book for me. I found it to be an interesting way to approach the subject, and I felt like I got to know the author a bit better because these ideas are obviously very important to him.

If you want a purely scientific explanation of dissipative adaptation, read his papers. If you want a deeply personal glimpse into the way he thinks about the origins of life, then this is the book for you.

Title: An Energy Focused Discussion on Self-organization

Review: Somehow the author was able to write down to my level - a person who has read previous books on evolution and complexity/self-organization, but no formal education or training in those areas.
In any case the writing was crystal clear and I never had to re-read a technical paragraph for better understanding. As a bonus he gives a good explanation of entropy, a subject I found has been burdened by the poorest imaginable explanations - until I read this book. The author goes off on the parallels with the Hebrew Bible, but I was unconvinced and skimmed those sections. Whatever motivated him doesn't matter to me. Results were excellent.
