Review: After weeks of waiting for Under the Whispering Door through my local library (support your libraries!), I was hesitant and excited to read it. I immediately opened it and found the Author’s Note that the book focuses on death, and there may be some triggers for readers. While I’m not triggered by death or discussions about it (y’all know I bring it up all the time with Stoicism), I knew I needed to be in the right headspace to appreciate the book thoroughly.

I gave it a few days and dove in.

TJ Klune did it again. He wrote another beautiful, moving, thoughtful book. As with his first novel, The House in the Cerulean Sea, there was an excellent representation of characters. Each character served a purpose, and they all felt real. In Under the Whispering Door, we meet Wallace – a terrible human who dies unexpectedly. He (his soul?) meets Meiying – a Reaper – who takes him to a tea shop run by Hugo – a ferryman. Hugo and Mei help Wallace make sense of his death (and of others) and help coach him to make the transition beyond the whispering door.

You meet lovely characters, like Hugo’s grandfather, Nelson (and their dog, Apollo), and some characters like The Manager instill curiosity and fear. You also meet Cameron, whose life and death dramatically affected his journey in the afterlife.

I sobbed at the end of this book. Make sure you have a box of tissues, and you’re somewhere you can ugly-cry because this book has all the feelings. While death is traditionally a complex topic, I appreciate how Klune allows hope and light to come from what is usually a somber event.

It’s easy to believe there is a little tea shop down a gravel road not too far from where you live right now. Under the Whispering Door tackles death, as the Author’s Note identifies in the beginning pages. In books, death is usually the outcome of war or disease or some flavor of tragedy, and that’s it. Klune went beyond the brevity of death and wrote a novel about what it means to live – even after you die.

Review: I don't often say that. I'll take my time reading a book and then loose interest and then come back to it, maybe. This book was one of those that I couldn't wait to sit down and read a couple more chapters. It was an amazing ride. The characters are all wonderful, even the awful ones (you need those to really push a story like this one) The ending didn't really surprise me too much and I'm glad all worked out in the end. I love Apollo, I want a dog like that!

Review: TJ Klune does not disappoint! Much like The House in the Cerulean Sea, this is a beautifully written story about the meaning of life, found family and second chances.

We go on a journey with Wallace of not only self actualization but also an exploration of what it means to live. The car of characters are a delight, the setting cozy and warm, and the message? Well. Read for yourself to see what it means to you.

This book is a particular comfort if you’ve lost someone recently and are still navigating the stages of grief.

Highly recommend this read, and especially so during Pride Month! Support LGBTQ+ authors!

Review: This book is unlike anything I’ve ever read! First off, it contains wonderful characters that TJ Klune is known for creating. You’ll quickly fall in love with Hugo, Wallace, Mei, Grandad Nelson, and Apollo the pup. The world in this book is filled with so much life even if it revolves around the afterlife.

Under the Whispering Door is a single POV based around Wallace, a strict corporate lawyer with little emotion, that suddenly dies. Upon his death, he meets reaper Mei who takes him to Hugo. He runs a tea shop, but is also a ferryman that helps the passing accept their death and cross over into the afterlife. The longer Wallace stays, the more his heart thaws and feelings begin to bloom. The gang at Charon’s Crossing Tea and Treats quickly become important to Wallace, something he’s never realized he needed. Later on, he’s given one more week before he has to cross over, and uses that time to do things he’s never done while alive.

This book is filled with laughter, tears, and heartwarming moments. It’s a beautiful take on what happens after death. I loved reading and seeing Wallace grow from being cold-hearted to caring. If you’re looking for an unique feel good read and something totally different, definitely check out this book!

Review: Near perfect. With not many pages left, I was concerned that the resolution was going to feel rushed, but no; the pacing was exactly as it should have been. The epilogue was absolutely gutting in the best possible way - I can’t remember the last time a book was so beautifully heart wrenching that my full body shook with each sob, but blurry as the words were through the tears, I could not stop reading.
