Review: In this story, Gunnie Lizbeth Rose has taken on a new crew on a job traveling to Dixie with a crate they must protect. When the train is blown up and the crate stolen, once again Lizbeth must complete the job by finding the crate and delivering it. She runs into Eli once more, who says he’s been looking for her to help him on a mission very similar to her’s, and in the repressive Dixie, she must dress the part of a proper woman and pretend to be something she’s not. Again, she’s not being told everything she needs to know, but as information is slowly revealed, they must figure out who is a friend and who is not, and fight their way to completing the mission, all while grower closer than ever. This Southern area of the US is pretty repressive, to women and blacks, and is a powder keg waiting to blow, which makes the mission of Lizbeth and Eli not only fraught with danger, but imperative to help the people living there. Another fantastic story in this series and I can’t wait to read more adventures for Gunnie Rose.

Review: I really love this series. Gunnie Rose is a quirky hot mess and it Glorious to read her adventures. I love that she doesn't suffer any grief from anyone. 4 stars instead of five because I wish the side characters had more depth. Chrissy could really shine with the right dialog.

Review: This was a great well told story. The plot was developed well and it flowed easily. I was very glad to see it came about that things were going to change in Sally and hopefully in Dixie.

Having grown up in New Orleans and experienced the racial divide Ms Harris writes about here, I was impressed how believable it was. Sadly there is still a divide in the South of our world. Hopefully as more people read stories like this, it gives them the courage to change ours for the better. Though not a doctor, I definitely empathized with Dr. Fielding and in his trying to treat everyone equally. That can be difficult in areas where even offering a smile or kind word to a person, believed by others to be less then, can drastically impact your own life and livelihood.

I really like the whole Gunnie concept of the series. It’s a great way to write a story with a very fun twist by making some Gunnies female. I like that Lizbeth is so worldly in some ways, but in others her naïveté is almost unbelievable. She does have an amazing insight into most people and situations, and it’s explained well when she runs into things she doesn’t get either, such as even going to a dress shop wearing pants and boots. Her shopping spree reminds me slightly of a slightly similar scene from the Pretty Woman movie.

Having a world that hasn’t experienced the technological advances or even the cultural ones, we have had in ours, is believable and a well thought concept. The intermix of old and new, down to how trains work better for travel then trucks and roads that are in disrepair is inspired. Without an American nation like ours, their government wouldn’t have had the federal highway system put into place.

I usually can spot where a plot is going, but I was surprised as Saint Moses manifested to the people. I also hadn’t put it together that Felix was behind it. I love finding things to read that can give me such surprises plus a fun story to read along the way. That it all flowed so well and the structure was so well done on the plot made this an amazing great novel. Adding in such great character development made it that much better. I look forward to more of the series.

A side note, the food that was brought up was perfectly described. There is no other food quick like Southern Dixie food and it made me homesick just to hear the descriptions. It also made me laugh when Koolaid was offered along with Iced Tea - you can’t get more suth’rn then that.

Review: In Charlaine Harris’ new Gunnie Rose series, the United States collapsed when FDR was assassinated and Vice President Garner succumbed to the influenza pandemic that wracked the country, killing millions. With the federal government largely out of the picture, Canada and Mexico each annexed parts of the country — significant parts, in the case of Canada. What remained of the U.S. broke up into five smaller nation-states, along geographic and cultural lines. The New England states plus the Carolinas and Virgínia established close ties with Britain, even naming themselves Brittania.

California had given the Russian Tsar and his family refuge following their escape from the Bolsheviks, and asked him to take over the government when the country fell apart; the West Coast from San Diego to as far north as southern Washington (Seattle was now part of Canada) was now known as the Holy Russian Empire. The Midwest and much of the West was now known as New America; an exception was Texahoma, a small state consisting of parts of Texas and Oklahoma, along with the bottom corner of Colorado. The fifth, and poorest, nation-state was Dixie, segregated before the fall and even more so now, with the Black population persecuted and abused in the rigidly stratified society.

In this second book in the series, 19 year old Gunnie Lizbeth Rose has just signed up with a new crew that’s been hired to deliver a small crate to the town of Sally, in Dixie. Traveling by train, the group is attacked en route by two men with guns (neither survives the encounter), and then just as they arrive at Sally the train is bombed and derailed, and multiple attackers come for them before being fought off.

The surviving members of the crew are assisted off the train with the crate, but after Lizbeth Rose helped one of their number to medical care, she returned to discover her crew boss dead and the crate stolen. The novel describes her attempts to locate the crate and complete the crew’s contract.

Happily (for both their and the reader’s sakes) and apparently coincidentally, one of the first people she meets is Sally is Eli, the Russian mage who was her employer and romantic interest in the first book in the series. As they share a goal in locating the chest, she agrees to work for him again.

The plot is convoluted and Byzantine, and Lizbeth Rose’s voice as narrator is perfectly written. The descriptions of Dixie’s inhabitants, both Black and White, feel painfully accurate. Charlaine Harris continues to be one of the top writers in the genre, even when there are no vampires involved in the story.

Recommended.
