Title: So, so disappointed

Review: The more I think about this book the more I am dissatisfied with it. Plot threads that needed to be tied up weren't and a bunch of stuff was thrown in at the end in the place of thoughtful storytelling. And I thought this series would be one of the great ones.

Let me first give major props to Tahir for her passionate dedication to illuminating the cost of war on mankind. Helene's realization in the tunnels of Antium of her role in perpetuating violence is the most powerful passage in the entire series for me. SPOILERS AHEAD! That being said...

HELENE Why why why is she not on the cover? It is foreshadowing of what happens to her character in the book. Although Tahir clearly wants Laia to be the hero, for me Helene is the most dynamic character. Her journey from brittle pawn to a strong, empathetic leader along with her slow burn love affair steal the show. Over and over she sacrifices her every want and need for duty. Her ultimate reward? Losing everyone she loves and burdened with a job she dreads. She pushes herself continually to grow. When she finally faces her worst fear that loving Harper will mean losing him - sheโ€™s proven correct almost immediately. I guess it wasn't painful enough when her decision to defy the empire and save Elias resulted in watching the life drain out of her parents and her sister? Or her one moment of joy with her boyfriend is immediately followed by watching the life drain out of her other sister? Her future consists entirely of bearing the heavy burden of building a new, inclusive government (with no help) combined with her anxious responsibility of keeping her nephew alive. No love, no support system, no freedom. WHAT KIND OF MESSAGE IS THAT? She deserved so much better.

HARPER Their love affair kept book 3 alive for me. The more we learned, the more interesting Harper became. Yet in Sky he disappears. Almost no dialogue or scheming with the Shrike (which has always been a highlight). I mean the reason he joined up with the Blood Shrike in the first place was to learn about his missing brother, and yet we don't hear a word about how it felt for him to finally meet Elias. What did the jinn say to him that frightened him enough to fake being asleep in the Soul Cather's cabin? Most importantly, and something I've waited for 3 books to find out, when did he fall in love with Helene? Was it after he beat her to a pulp with brass knuckles? How did that act affect him once he realized he DID love her? Those loose ends should have been addressed.

LAIA. I loved her in Ember, when she still had relatable insecurities to overcome. By the end of Sky, she has so many magical powers she can't keep them straight. She's invisible. She's telepathic. She has a jinn living inside her that helps her fly. All of this takes away from her original determination and grit. The priorities of her life at this point is not listening to anyone, obtaining a weapon (which she drops), and seducing Zombie Elias with a mango. Meanwhile multiple characters fall all over themselves praising her strength - Elias even says sheโ€™s stronger than the rest of them (Hello, Helene?)? I'm also very confused because Laia says Elias is the love of her life, but she met him BEFORE she fell in love with Keenan. And when Keenan betrayed her, she fell back in love with Elias? While Helene gets nothing, Laia gets a loving husband (who gets to work his dream job), the job she's always wanted, and a mom who will live forever. I guess that's why Darin 'had' to die but that makes no sense either. Laia and Elias moved heaven and earth to save his life only for him to die pointlessly in the last few pages after having zero meaningful interaction with his sister for the entire book. If Tahir's message is that someone has to die, that person should be Elias.

ELIAS He was fine at first but that dude hasn't has a personality in so long that I just don't care about him anymore. He complains about his job (which saved him from death by poisoning), beats up trees and feels guilty that he killed people as a soldier. A way more meaningful ending for him would have been battling his mom, being forced to kill her in self-defense and then sacrificing himself for humanity because he couldn't live with the burden of more life lost. Just sayin.

KERIS. Who? Where the hell was she for the entire book? We're supposed to believe our heartless supervillian WHO KILLED HER OWN SON FOR NO REASON suddenly cares about his well being and refuses to kill the child who is her only obstacle to getting what she's always wanted? That she's completely undone by hearing her mom's nickname for her? It. Makes. No. Sense. Which brings me to our other villain..

NIGHTBRINGER OK, I can't even with this one. All the carefully set up structures for his character over the series are swept away. He previously made it clear he wanted to kill all SCHOLARS in retribution for the horrors they brought on his people. Now he's just killing random non-scholar families and bent on killing all the jinn that he just worked 1,000 years to bring back to life? Heโ€™s going to put a jinn in chains even though he loves them? He wants to kill/โ€œopen upโ€ Laia even though heโ€™s shown her love and compassion in the past? The implication is that he lost his mind...but when did this happen? He's been cruising along with his scholar master plan and gotten all his family back. Why fall apart now? And the Sea of Suffering plot was way too abstract. Something that complex should have been given set up before the last book. Which brings me to...

MAGIC 'RULES' Arbitrary and mere plot devices. The queen of the jinn (never mentioned before) has been living in Laia's blood and all of her friendsโ€™ blood. But Darin and Harper haven't received their magic powers because they haven't directly defied the Nightbringer. Or something. And the Queen can't give her any helpful information about the Nightbringer because she made a 'blood vow' not too. Why this is a part of a blood vow makes no sense and is never explained. Also the Soul Catcher can only be replaced by another human. Although all the ones before Elias were jinn. Why?

DEUS EX MACHINA. Saving the worst (besides Harper's death) for last. So Laia's mom...who sacrificed herself in Reaper...just pops up in the end of a battle...just to kill Keris...and conveniently take Elias' place. Nope, nope, nope. It was so ridiculous I actually laughed. Not with joy.

If Tahir had let Harper live, I would have given Sky 3 starts even with all its flaws. She created an engaging world and an amazing love story between two interesting and complex characters. Too bad her message about this love ends with chaining the survivor to a bleak life of servitude. So one star for the indomitable Helene and one for the enduring statement on how war affects those left behind to pick up the pieces. I can't even re-read this series now, knowing how badly it ends. I feel depressed.

Title: Absolutely brilliant in every way. Soul-crushing, but brilliant.

Review: Iโ€™ve finally finished this series, and I have more emotions than I know what to do with. This is undoubtedly my favorite book in the series, even though (because?) it broke my heart the most. Sabaa Tahir is not afraid to rip my heart out, stomp on it, and then glue it back together. I respect that but also hate it. (Nothing against Sabaa. Sheโ€™s great. But also, how dare she??)

I read Reaper back in 2018, and looked up a recap of that book before starting this one. Itโ€™s a sign of Tahirโ€™s skill that as soon as I started reading, I fell back into the world as if it hadnโ€™t been three years since I did so last. I was sucked into the story immediately, and terrified for all of the characters.

Unexpected things I loved: Helene, Helene and Harperโ€™s relationship, Laia and Heleneโ€™s friendship. The theme here is that, despite sometimes wishing her chapters didnโ€™t interrupt me reading about Laia and Elias, the girl really grew on me. I have so much respect for her, even if, at times, I was internally shrieking because she was being so dense regarding her love life. Also, her and Laia bonding over how much men suck was the quality content I didnโ€™t know I needed in my life. Such a small thing, but a great one.

I knew I loved Laia and Elias, but in between Reaper and Sky, I forgot just how much. They caused me SO MUCH PAIN as I was reading this freaking book, I donโ€™t know how to express it all. The romantic tension between these two and Eliasโ€™ tendency to nope out of literally every conversation because he couldnโ€™t handle his own feelingsโ€ฆ oh my god. I mean, that specific part of Elias did make me giggle occasionally, but for the most part, I was just internally screeching. When she brought him a mango. When he helped her with her hair. SO MUCH SCREECHING. So help my hopeless romantic heart.

Characters aside, the plot was also brilliant. No one ever caught a break. I never knew what was about to happen. Nothing ever felt repetitive, and there were certainly no easy victories. I think Tahir took the story with the jinn in a very clever direction, one I personally didnโ€™t expect. The war certainly didnโ€™t go the way I expected. I was getting closer and closer to the end, and more and more stressed because of how few pages were left and how much was still wrong. I love books that scare me that way. Iโ€™m only being a little bit sarcastic. :)

As for the endingโ€ฆ So much heartbreak. So much pain. But a surprise came in and sort of saved the day, a little bit, so not everything was awful. The last couple of chapters actually had quite a few happy moments, including for Laia and Elias, and if not for the fact that it was after 2 in the morning and I share a small apartment with my family and didnโ€™t want to wake anyone up, who knows how loudly I wouldโ€™ve squealed. Internally, I was squealing very loudly. The last couple of pages fixed my broken heart with their Elaia content. Iโ€™m choosing to focus on that more thanโ€ฆ other things.

This review is a mess because I finished the book at nearly 3 in the morning and now itโ€™s 4 a.m. and Iโ€™m also a mess. But itโ€™s definitely honest, and even though I seriously did ramble, it got my point across. I loved this book so much, despite the emotional turmoil I experienced while reading. Like I said, itโ€™s my favorite in the series, followed by Torch, then Reaper, then Ember. I think. Itโ€™s been a hot minute since I read the first three, but anyway. The whole series is spectacular, and I canโ€™t wait to read more from Sabaa Tahir. ๐Ÿ–ค
