GRE/GMAT Math: A Systematic Approach by Sid Thatte Book Review

Rating: 4.0 out of 5 stars
Title: Strong organization of concepts & good test-taking tips for GRE/GMAT, but be aware of errors/typos
Date: Reviewed in the United States on July 24, 2012
Review: I haven't decided whether I want to take the GRE/GMAT but I was curious as to the range of math topics involved. Outside of the large test taking companies (Kaplan, Barron, Princeton Review) this text had really high ratings and was described as having fully worked solutions so I decided to give it a chance.

I do really like the workbook style format of this book, which breaks up each subtopic into manageable chunks, and it seems to cover all the math topics described on the official ETS website in depth. I also liked how he gave recommendations of what to memorize and other problem-solving tips to become more efficient during test taking. However, there are several glaring math errors that would make me hesitate to recommend this text to the complete math novices that this book seems to be geared towards. If you have a moderately strong math background and just want to review the basics you might have forgotten, this would probably be a good book for you. I would probably rate 5 for organization and test-taking tips and 3.5 for content due to the math errors. I have worked through the whole book and I have outlined the main errors I was able to catch below so other users can reference them and to improve future editions. Leave a comment if you think I am misinterpreting anything.

Chapter 2: Algebra
1. He calls both fractions (exponent terms with negative powers or rational/algebraic functions) and exponent terms monomials/polynomials. The math definition of polynomials only involves exponent terms with positive powers. For example, in the addition/subtraction of polynomials section he has [EX 2.009] 3xy - 12zc/a + 4xy + 15cz/a as an "addition/subtraction of polynomials" problem even though that isn't a polynomial expression. The GRE/GMAT probably doesn't ask you directly if something is a polynomial or a rational function, but I would expect more precision with math language for something that claims to be a math review guide. It's also a weird organization since he introduces "algebraic functions" as a followup section after he already used them in the first algebra section.

2. The author has this weird thing about even roots. He repeatedly says "The +/- sign comes only when the square root sign goes." He uses examples where sqrt(x) is an implied +/- root already. I've never seen that used in another math text. For example, I'm used to sqrt(4) being just 2 if sqrt(4) is the term that is shown. Sqrt(x^2) can be +/-x due to sqrt(x^2) = |x| or you can get +/- roots from solving an equation like x^2 - 4 = 0 with roots, but if a root is given without any signs, it is assumed to be a positive root. Typically I have seen +/- always written in, if it is needed. That seems to be a much clearer usage than always trying to keep track of whether sqrt(x) has +/- attached like this text uses. I'm not familiar enough with GRE usage of even roots like this yet, but I would like to update my review once I am able to get some more specific examples.
3. 2.201 (pg 87) is clearly wrong since d = 0 makes 3d^3 >= 2d^2 true. The author drops a solution since he divides by d. You should always get everything on one side to factor if you can to avoid dropping solutions. This is a process similar to the equation 3d^3 = 2d^2. You wouldn't divide by d there, you would get everything on one side and factor. I know some people like to divide by variables as a "shortcut" but that can be a bad habit, as this problem illustrates. Dividing by constants should still be okay in most cases since that wouldn't lead to dropped solutions.

Chapter 3: Word Problems
1. 3.093 (pg 115): The answer key gets x = 15, but that does not fully answer the question. X represents the number of men and women from each side that is laid off so the final answer should be 30.

Chapter 4: Geometry
1. 4.049 (pg 189): The answer key defines area of upper shaded region as (area of triangle PSR) - (area of triangle DSC). If I'm not mistaken, that would give you the area of the white stripe down the middle, not the shaded triangle DSC that you want. You can use similar triangles with PSR and DSC to solve for SC and find area of shaded triangle DSC: x/8 = 7/10 so SC = 28/5 and total area = 17.5 + (1/2)(7)(28/5) = 37.1. Feel free to correct me in the comments if you think I am misinterpreting this solution.
2. 4.083 (pg 203 - 204): In volume of a cone, he never uses the 2h described for the height of the cone. If height of cone = 2h, then r/x = sqrt(1/pi).
3. pg. 208 (equations of lines): Not an error but two-point form is more commonly known as point-slope form (y - y1 = m(x - x1)). I think most people would be more familiar with that equation form then the one given in this text.

Chapter 5: Odd Types of Questions
1. 5.006 (pg 215): B = 2 doesn't work if you do the actual multiplication with 14394. It should be B = 7. This is evident if you try 44 and try to work the addition underneath.
2. 6.014 (pg 227): The answer key uses the wrong values for the years since the service sector uses the right hand scale. I believe the answer is still A because you still get double growth from 1970 to 1975 using the right hand scale though.

Chapter 7: Quantitative Comparison
1. pg 239: The author should really put x^2 >= 0 as a property, instead of just x^2 > 0 since 0 is easily forgotten.
2. 7.045 (pg 249): The answer key itself says uv < 0 so that means the answer should be B so that 0 is the greater quantity.

I haven't completely worked through Kaplan's and Barron's GRE guides and I will try to update my review with how this text holds up against how their math sections are taught.

Title: A great experience
Date: Reviewed in the United States on August 20, 2013
Review: I'm a smart person who dropped out of math my freshman year in high school. Many many years later, I've got it in my head that I want to go to grad school, which means take the GREs, which means face up to my math demons.

I picked this book because of the good reviews, and the title appealed to me. I needed a systematic approach, because doing practice questions wasn't going to help me. Aside from a little a+b=c kind of algebra, where I sort of remembered moving variables and stuff from one side of an equation to another, I was pretty much starting from a blank slate.

I began working with Mr. Thatte's book about three weeks ago, and have been taking practice quizzes all throughout. I went from a feeling of abject failure, total cluelessness, to feeling somewhat familiar with many of the questions, and getting a couple right.

Can you imagine that? Me, getting math questions right???!

I've learned a ton of rules, and then, buy working through the problems in the book, have gotten a feel for the rules. That was what as missing in my attempt to learn math before, I could never relate to it, and it always made me feel bad, because I'd always end up with that horrible, horrible wrong answer.

But in working with this book I'm actually feeling pretty good. I'm using index cards to work the problems as best I can, then I read through the solution, to see how I did. If I got a wrong answer, I usually see exactly why. So I get a kind of an "Aha" feeling, instead of an "I SUCK" feeling. Which makes everything more pleasant.

And the amount that I've learned, the math that I'm now conversant with, after three weeks, is probably worth three years of high school. Being smart, I can get the gist of it fairly quickly, but being hard on myself, I never gave myself the chance to work it into my understanding by imperfectly working problems.

Ask me about exponents and square roots and how many degrees in a straight line and how to calculate the area of a cylinder, and how to factor a quadratic equation (for that I had to supplement the book with you tube videos - I recommend greenemath.com).

After doing this book I'm going to double down on my online practice test taking, but without this book, that would have been a complete waste of time for me.

Thank you, Sid Thatte. Thank you, thank you, thank you. I put myself in your hands, you did right by me. I am now officially not a math hater. And I am ready to take my first attempt at the GREs this week, confident that I will recognize something about every problem.
