Review: Let's face it, working mothers are moonlighting - on the job or at home is the second job. Lots of overtime. It's never been easier and it is still harder than it should be for women who wish to further their careers or avocations while raising children. This book makes it seem more possible, shedding light on what's changed, and what hasn't, and what can be that was perhaps not possible before. It's carefully researched and thoughtfully written. What might seem a scholarly work from two academics feels really personal and accessible. And it is especially meaningful that they weaves together what are the responsibilities and obligations of the parent and what can and should be accomplished in the workplace. A very important book well done.

Review: Anyone who is a mom, thinks of becoming a mom some day, works with a mom, or manages a mom, etc should read this book. Filled with concrete suggestions for trying to thrive in your career as a working mother, this book is a helpful guide for women at any stage in their career who will face the inevitable challenges unique to our gender. From dealing with fertility challenges to sleepless nights with infants to sending graduates off to college, this book takes a deep dive into every stage of life a mother experiences and how it can impact her career and life at work. This book should be required reading for all upper level management, for the book lays out the clear case that in order to retain and attract top female talent and get the best work product out of working mothers, flexibility is not just a nice bonus but is key.

Review: This is a superb volume, a true contribution. The authors do what they set out to do, weave together research and anecdotal stories, no light task to undertake. What results is a splendid compilation of practical direction and specific recommendations for women who are navigating lives as working mothers. An aspect of the book that is especially innovative is the concept of thinking of career as including motherhood, and not the idea of "balancing" career and motherhood. Several general principles emerge, for one, the idea of embracing complexity in life. That is relevant for all of us, not only for working mothers. Know yourself is another principle. take the time to do the introspective work to get to know your needs and desires. Prepare in depth, where possible, for change and for interviews. Stay flexible to differing needs at different developmental levels of one's children and one's self. Chapter 7, Career Paths That Twist and Turn, was a favorite of mine. Although I chose to read the volume through, it is possible, as the authors note, to go to specific chapters at different times in one's development and to use Maternal Optimism as a reference and practical guide. In addition to being this valuable tool kit, it is well written, and therefore, a good read. Finally, the title tells so much.....there is not struggle, angst, and despair, there is optimism.

Review: This book helps to bust the outdated stereotype that working motherhood is all challenges, providing compelling and insightful perspectives on the positive aspects. It can be so easy to get swamped down by the negatives, so this book provides a refreshing reminder of the positives that can be gained, that can help enhance both the job and time with the kids. I especially appreciate how the whole book is evidence-based; these authors are true experts in their fields, so we are reading much more than just their opinion on these topics. Through stories, suggestions, and straightforward explanations of research, the authors shift focus to the ways that working mothers can proactively and optimistically manage their work and lives. Outstanding read.

It's a fantastic book, content-wise, but it arrived in the state pictured with this review--the cover smudged and worn. What I find incredibly valuable about your book is the positive framework it provides by which to think about being a paid working mother. I love the notion that the term work life balance assumes the two are at odds and at opposite sides of the spectrum- they are not. I really identify with this positive, empowering approach. I’ve not seen a book that takes this perspective.
