Title: Wow, simply wow!

Review: I just spent the past day or two flying through the pages of Observer. And now that I'm done, I'm going to spend my entire week reading it all over again very carefully!

I pre-ordered the book a while ago and put the release date on my calendar. As soon as I got it and read the first 65 pages, I knew I was in for a wild ride. The pace picked up to a “cannot put it down level.” Brilliant scientists, conflicted neurosurgeons, a mysterious compound in the Cayman Islands, love, betrayal, and murder, and oh yes, earth shattering scientific breakthroughs that will blow your mind! What else could you possibly want from a novel?

When I first saw the ad for Observer back in November, I suspected that if this book were anything like the other works by Lanza (the biocentrism series) and Nancy Kress' award winning novels (Beggars in Spain, Tomorrow's Kin, etc.), this would be a really great read. And it doesn't disappoint. It's jam packed with cool science, suspense, and characters who come to life in the pages of the book. I really felt like I was in the Cayman Islands with all of them living the story and reveling in the ideas.

At least right now, I think the thing I liked the most is the main character's reluctance (like my own) to believe the compound’s scientific mission at first. Just like Dana Scully on the "X" Files or Ranae Holland on Finding Bigfoot, Caro is cautious, skeptical, even suspicious of what she's being asked to do. I mean who would just step right in and automatically assume performing surgeries on the brain of a healthy patient was an ethical thing to do? But by experiencing it step-by-step alongside Caro, having my views of reality turned inside out, and learning about lots of new cutting-edge science (especially quantum physics, which never made sense to me until now), made for an amazing ride. When do I get my implant?

I also liked the parts about Caro's sister and her two nieces, one of which has cystic fibrosis. Unless you've had a close friend who's been through that, or you've been through it yourself, you can't imagine what it's like. You're a 24/7 caretaker with no life and no end of it in sight, and it effects everyone around you until they fall away one by one over time. Caro is a hero for being Ellen's champion and it gives her the fuel she needs to be part of the greatest scientific achievement in the history of mankind - to solve the mystery of the soul. And to find out what life and reality is really all about—not some lame bit of science fantasy, but for real!

I'm not going to spoil the ending for anyone who hasn't read it yet - but in short - it's so good I'm reading it again now. If you like this kind of book, you should buy it and read it too! All I can say is "wow!"

Title: A hard science Sci-Fi novel that never lets go

Review: I just finished OBSERVER, and, wow, it was good. It was really good.

From the beginning there was something about this book that had fascinated me, with my only fear being that it might be intellectually beyond my reach. This area of quantum physics is not only new and exciting, but it is also tremendously “heady” and it stretches the imagination. I’ve seen many videos on it, and its implications STILL baffle me. The good news is that it seems to even baffle scientists, and throughout the book the characters, many of whom are the cream of the crop of computer programmers, scientists, and medical doctors, and even they were constantly begging those "in the know" to go easy on them, to give them condensed explanations – they knew it was all above even them.

But the good news is that the book does both: it gives a good amount of detail, yet doesn’t seem to go on so long that you’ve “had enough” with the details and kind of skim, because even if you did, well ... the characters are usually right there with you.

What is so great about this novel is that it really draws you in with a great story with good characters and a clear storyline. I was worried in the beginning when so many facets of the story seemed to clash – I kept wondering if the author was trying too hard to make the events interesting and full of manufactured conflict – but as I read on, I found there was good reason for these things, and events when played out made a lot of sense.

What should interest potential readers most is that this is an extremely sharp novel about a newly developing area of science that is sincerely amazing on its own, and OBSERVER constantly raises its game throughout the novel. And just when I was intrigued by what was going on about halfway through the novel, feeling really great about what this science could mean to humanity, when the rug gets pulled out from under everybody and the characters – and you – get to see a new, horrible side of mankind. There are also wonderful developments that take place with the scientists and their relationships – some sad, too – but it is all immensely readable and an absolute page turner throughout.

I cannot recommend OBSERVER enough!

Title: This is my new favorite book, soon-to-be movie?

Review: This book is my new favorite, which I suspect will be made into a movie like some of my other favorite hard science fiction novels like Andy Weir's The Martian.

If you appreciate a great story with plenty of twists and turns paired with mind-bending science and thought-provoking possibilities, you'll enjoy Observer.

And it's a plus if you like a strong female lead - like I do - delivered as a complex and fully realized heroine.

That is what the pairing of Lanza and Kress has delivered in this book - the best of both worlds - great writing / great topic.

I won't go on and on about the accolades I'd give to this book, but in short, an author always has a point of view or something they want to get across in a book. It gets heavy in a few spots but I really connected with the characters, especially the main character Caro. She wasn't any one thing through the book. At times she was prickly and difficult to get along with. At times, kind and a great sister and friend. Women, even fictional women, are so often put into one-dimensional boxes that they must not climb out of, but Caro reminded me of my mother, my sister, of me. She gets knocked down early in the book then has to figure out a way to get back up. When offered the opportunity of a lifetime, she wonders if it's too good to be true, if something is wrong, and maybe it is, but she wants to decide for herself and then goes for the ride of a lifetime, which mirrors her inner struggle perfectly. It's just great. The other characters are great too but I identified with Caro the most and appreciated the care taken to bring her to life.

Do I sense another movie with a strong female lead like Arrival? Observer, anyone?
