Title: Amazing!!

Review: I only learned of this author a few months ago. I am from the generation of Kate Moss and super thin models being the unattainable norm for beauty. The author is much younger than myself and my generation but it seems that some things never change. She discusses the complexities of womanhood and all things related to our bodies, bodies image, ideal beauty standards and how men play so heavily into all of that. Overall, the author doesn't say this but if I read between the lines well enough, she is pretty angry that basically the same old beauty norms still apply today for women. Little, if any, change towards equality has been established. She is angry that the skinnier she is, the higher her pay check. Her being nude in a video propelled her to the top over night, not having clothes on or being a great model. All of these things seems to make her angry or at least annoyed. She is so relatable on so many levels even though she is hailed as the body of this generation and as an international beauty. All of the complexities of what her parents and society told her about beauty and sexuality are relatable to any woman of any age. In some ways this book heals my soul as a woman who has experienced so many of the same messages she has been told. Yet she is famous, beauty and hailed as the body of this generation and she feels the way I have felt many times in life. But in another way, the book makes me angry as a woman. It just highlights what is still wrong in the world and men and society norms. Even with every millienal out there on the street fighting for women's empowerment; yet. it seems that no matter what, women will never be completely free of the issues around our bodies, beauty and sexuality. Great book!

Title: An unflinching look at what the female body means, and not just physically

Review: I believe I was raised to respect women as equals, though as I’ve grown up, I’ve come to realize they’re probably more often superior to men. There are certain individuals in this book that did not treat the author respectfully, though she walks a fine line between calling them out and taking back the power for herself. I did not at any point feel that she was part of the Cancel Culture that pervades society today. I think she wants to point out how women in her industry, and probably anywhere and everywhere, can be treated when they are objectified. I do believe she is aware that she is probably considered one of the more attractive people in popular culture right now, but her writing, which is actually quite strong throughout, is not pretentious or snobby. I’m not sure if I would call it down to earth, but she is definitely aware of her flaws and makes no secret of them here. The book is raw, emotional, and feels genuine, it feels like it was written to get some of her feelings down on paper, and also not just to make others try to understand her, but to help her understand herself. I don’t think this book is for everyone, but as a heterosexual white male in his early/mid thirties, I felt there was more than enough that I could empathize with, learn about, and appreciate in this book, and I hope it helps others keep a more open mind of what life can be like for women today.

Title: From one woman to another

Review: This book makes you feel like you’re hearing the unraveling of one of your closest friend’s life: the boys that hurt her, the moments that made her, the decisions that made her flourish. My body was written so well I couldn’t put it down. This was my book I read everyday by the pool. It was dreamy while relatively normal, which made it easy to relate your own life issues with as a woman. Emily did a great job diving into issues we all face as women. Loved it.

Review: I have seen a lot of negative reviews on this book. Mainly from people complaining that Emily doesn't speak enough about how beauty standards impact women's self-esteem, or people shaming Emily for not being 100% happy with her career as a model.

Here's the thing: This book is about Emily's personal experiences. If you are looking for an academic thesis about why beauty standards are bad, go elsewhere. This book is not that.

Secondly, people who are angry at Emily for criticizing the modeling industry are missing the point of the book. Emily has reached the highest status a woman can reach in our society, and yet she is still treated like shit by men who are richer and more powerful than her.

I have read the memoirs of many famous models, and I would never trade my mediocre middle-class existence for theirs. Being a "model" is just another way of saying that other people own your body. They are basically prostitutes. I don't blame Emily for hating the industry she is in.

I hope Emily continues to write because I think she has talent. I also appreciate her ability to throw not-so-subtle shade at famous celebrities. Her tone can come across as "I'm not like other girls" sometimes, but I find this aspect of her personality entertaining and funny.

Title: A Story Well Told, A Life Not Understood

Review: Yes, she can write. I think, however, it's quit apparent that for most of her life she had no idea where her boundaries were and I rather doubt that it was possible for anyone else to know. Early on she understood that her was body was power and currency of a certain kind. What she does not appear to have come to until quite late is what that power was, the circumscriptions on it and just what she was willing to sell and what the terms would be. Consider that she's OK with some theft (squatting in houses) but not OK with shoplifting. She's OK with selling her image but displeased with some of the terms. She dissociates to get through her experiences but CHOOSES those experiences again and again and again. She is pleased with the reaction that she uses her appearance to get but displeased that she is judged only on her appearance. I'm not sure that even now there is any coherent Emily - I would hope at some point she sets her own boundaries and makes her own choices in a way that feels like one person.
