Review: As a seasoned practitioner of dynamic psychotherapy, I very much enjoyed reading Dr. Eppel's book, Short-Term Psychodynamic Psychotherapy (STPP) for several reasons. The book is succinct and easy to read, extracting the essential components of several different STPP approaches. With a foundation of important background knowledge, Eppel's book is a complete guide to treatment.

STPP packs an abundance of wisdom and guidance into each page. Eppel's broad coverage made me excited to think more about the many concepts he presents including the history of short-term dynamic psychotherapies, a review of research methods, a thorough introduction to attachment theory, how to think about interventions through choice point analysis, and even an update on the language of psychodynamic psychotherapy. I especially found useful the charts drawing parallels between similar concepts, like how attachment theory's secure base is akin to object relations theory's therapeutic alliance. The traditional analyst will benefit from learning updated language. In general, Eppel's book helped me to integrate more fully psychoanalysis with attachment theory.

Eppel lays the groundwork for STPP treatment with a satisfying review of (or introduction to) emotion theory. Then, having taught us about emotions, defenses, and "the Triangles," we reach the how-to chapter called, A Manual for Short-Term Psychodynamic Psychotherapy. Eppel guides the reader through a complete STPP treatment from beginning to end. The last chapters address STPP supervision. Additionally, Eppel teaches non-psychotherapists, like primary care doctors, how they can this information in the book to build better more empathic connections with patients. The author believes, as do I, that it is important for all healthcare providers to understand their own emotions and defenses, as well as their patients.

In summary, Eppel's book is a welcome addition to the current literature in psychotherapy methods. I hope psychiatrists and clinicians from all theoretical backgrounds will read this book. The education in emotions and attachment will not only build a clinician's ability to treat suffering but will also help them hone their empathy. When we understand emotions and their relationship to the defenses that keep them locked away, we can direct treatment with more skill and compassion. I wholeheartedly recommend Short-Term Psychodynamic Psychotherapy for anyone interested in deepening their understanding of how to heal the mind.

Review: I always enjoyed Alan Eppel’s writing: his approach is comprehensive, yet his writing is succinct; he includes complicated topics yet he presents them simply to the reader. As a result, his readers span from the mental health professional to the curious-minded public. His latest book on Short-Term Psychodynamic Therapy uses the same writing style as he recaps the trend of thinking and practice in the field (from Davanloo to Fosha), while he bolsters their ideas with the trend of general neuroscientific findings. He manages to present some of the drier concepts with interest because he sprinkles the book with case studies to make them come alive. Those who are curious about the most efficient and effective way to condense psychodynamic treatment will be very satisfied with their purchase of this state-of-the-art book.
