THE HISTORY-MAKING CLASSIC ABOUT CROSSING THE COLOR LINE IN AMERICA'S SEGREGATED SOUTHβOne of the deepest, most penetrating documents yet set down on the racial question.ββAtlanta Journal & Constitution Β In the Deep South of the 1950βs, a color line was etched in blood across Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia. Journalist John Howard Griffin decided to cross that line. Using medication that darkened his skin to deep brown, he exchanged his privileged life as a Southern white man for the disenfranchised world of

Review: βFear dims even the sunlight.ββ John Howard Griffin, Black Like MeReading this book made me think: I don't know anything. It is so strange reading about times that I did not live through. And then reading about bold strong human beings who did live through them with a bravery one can only marvel at. Black like me is a work of Non Fiction and what a book it is. The writing is so without pretense and so absorbing. You really learn alot. And even if you think you know alot, reading word for tragic word what times were like back then. I remember after reading this book I said to a family member, "Now I get it". Of coarse I can't get it. Nobody can get everything who was not alive during that time period and did not experience what went on personally. We read all sorts of books for different reasons. This one should be mandatory reading. A superb and heart breaking book.

Review: This is quite simply the best book I've ever read on any topic. The guts that it took to take on institutionalized racism in such a direct and effective manner is stunning. What African-Americans have fought against can only be compared with Nazi Germany. They've had to form their own version of an underground resistance movement just to survive.John Howard Griffin taps into this movement by disguising himself and then reporting on his experiences in New Orleans and Mississippi during a period where the government can only be described as Fascist. What Griffin, his family, friends, and supporters have to go through after Black Like Me is published reads like a novel set in a science fiction dystopia. It is hard to believe that things are/were this bad in a country that prides itself on being a shining city on a hill of freedom. If this was the period that people are nostalgic for when they say "Make America Great Again", then let's not.

Review: John Howard Griffin is absolutely incredible. Iβm so happy that this book was recommended for me to read, because it gave me a new perspective that I think I will find valuable for the rest of my life.As a black woman, I was absolutely repulsived by some of the comments made by white individuals who picked Griffin up on the side of road, but I was amazed at his ability to use his white experience to see the best in these individuals. He saw them as humans acting out an ideology that they truly didnβt understand, and without his desire to truly understand it from the other side by becoming one, he would be just like his white counterparts as he was the weeks before the experiment. His actions reminded me of a poem by Thich Nhat Hanh titled Recommendation where he says:βThe only thing worthy of you is compassion β invincible, limitless, unconditional.βHe had compassion as a white man in a black mans body. He didnβt embody white guilt to move the collective forward, and I think by these simple actions he truly embodied the bravery of black men and women who looked at their oppressors with love and compassion, and prayed for the healing of their mind while hoping that through love that could drive out the hate.Good job, John Howard Griffin. In loving memory, thank you for your contributions to society and being on the right side of history.

Review: I chose this book because I heard someone mention the book to me in class and ever since then I have always wanted to read it. What this man does in this book is incredible and humbling. It is something very few people are willing to do. Therefore, I wanted to read about this extraordinary act.Summary: Black Like Me is a book written by John Howard Griffin who lived in the United States during the 1950s-60s era when the Civil Rights Movement was in effect. Living in Mansfield, Texas John has heard of the terrible conditions and treatment that African Americans face daily, but he is frustrated at how little he can understand in his own white skin. The truth will always be obscured to a white man, because white men donβt want to acknowledge how poor the treatment of African Americans is. So therefore, John decides to make the color of his skin black. This decision will not only impact his own life, but his familyβs life as well. His family is supportive of his decision, and prepares for Johnβs absence. Along with this, a black magazine named Sepia agreed to fund Johnβs experience. With the aid of medication, UV light, and skin paint, John undergoes the process of becoming black. Upon looking at himself in the mirror, John doesnβt even recognize himself. He begins his journey in New Orleans and eventually moves down to Mississippi and Alabama which are notorious for their harsh treatment of African Americans. John discovers a whole new side to the world where finding a drink of water is a troubling journey and even being acknowledged by a white person is unheard of. Unspeakable stories and accounts are given by John Howard Griffin in his book Black Like Me. The story of a white man turned into a black man truly depicts the stark differences between appalling differences in treatment based solely on the color of oneβs skin. Find out more about Johnβs experience by reading his book, Black Like Me.I rate this book a 4/5 Stars.I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in the injustices associated with the treatment of African Americans during the Civil Rights era. It is a riveting book that will challenge you personally and leave you feeling unsettled (in a good way).
