Review: Nails in the Wall, a reworked version of the author's doctoral dissertation, is a fascinating examination of the sixteenth-century reformations through the lens of seven Dominican convents in Strasbourg. Amy Leonard stresses religion, power balance, and gender as all having been important in the survival of three of these convents, explaining convincingly that had the nuns been men or had they lived in a country with a stronger central power than the Holy Roman Emperor - or had they not undergone the medieval religious reforms - they would not have made it through the Protestant Reformation. Her perspective is fair, and though she clearly sympathizes with the nuns, she does not exculpate them. The writing is clear, straightforward, and lively (although it must be noted that Leonard has a bad habit of splitting every infinitive that she can), and the thesis is well argued. While many of the bar graphs are somewhat superfluous, most of the frequent anecdotes about individual nuns are entertaining and forward Leonard's argument. The book contains significant bibliographic and annotative notes, printed as thirty pages of endnotes.

Review: This book deals with the issue as to what happened to the religious houses of women during the Reformation. Leonard explores the misconception that women had the same experience as men during the Reformation. We see how some Dominican convents tenuously survived in Protestant Strasbourg throughout the 16th and 17th centuries, whereas the men’s houses did not; all this in spite of the Protestant emphasis on the rejection of vows and orders, and of women’s vocation as wives and mothers working in the home. Though some of these convents survived, many did not since protestant families were pulling their daughters out of them, or because many nuns were leaving on their own accord. The remaining women were being pressured and lured out of their vows, and many who would not renounce them were forcefully enclosed in their convents in ways they had never been restricted before. Nevertheless, the spread of Protestantism was not a blanket event. Under the weak centralized governance of the Holy Roman Empire, a plurality of contending authorities meant that the situation in 16th century Strasbourg was very complex and nuanced, with three convents surviving until 1681 (when Strasbourg was turned over to the control of the Catholic king of France, Louis XIV). Leonard points out that the German situation differed substantially from that of the English on account of its more centralized government which was more capably able to enact the complete destruction of Catholic monasticism. The nuns in Strasbourg depended not so much on help from the Emperor or the Pope in their survival, but on their native and family ties, as the daughters of local notables.

In some cases, the nuns took advantage of their female identities to conveniently argue that, as hard as they may try, they could not wrap their minds around the new religion and its novel vernacular liturgies, and would just have to keep to the old ways. Women were perceived as less subversive than men, and more easily manipulated, and such a widespread perception was a key to their survival. The nuns made concessions to Protestant authority, accepting to hear weekly sermons and give up certain important elements of their lifestyle (such as Latin prayer, their habits, the mass, etc.), and one of the ways in which they ensured their survival was in converting the convents into schools for young girls (where, of course, teachings on theology were supposed to be forbidden). Nevertheless, the nuns were often double-dealing, maintaining many of the practices forbidden to them in secret, feeling fully justified in doing so on account of their beliefs.

Review: I wish this book were more accessibly priced because I would use it in my classes. I read it when it first came out and it fits very well with Anne Winston-Allen's Convent Chronicles. It demonstrates that women were not mere pawns in history but active agents -- even in their decisions to stay in or leave convents and their willingness to resort to violence to support their position. This is an outstanding book that deserves a larger audience.
