Review: I find the editor puts it best, '“The Lives of the Saints” exhibit to the reader images the most perfect of whatever the human race, in times past, has yielded to God in return for his countless mercies.'

In my opinion, this most closely resembles the original Fr. Alban Butler text. because I believe his original intent was to present not only the historic lives of the Saints but also provide his own moral insights and commentary within the story to inspire in the reader a desire to emulate them. That is what this edition through his profound moral commentary does effectively. For those of you familiar with Plutarch's works it's very similar in style to Plutarch's Lives. For lack of a better comparison it seems to me to that Butler's minor goal as Thomas Aquinas baptized Aristotle's works was to baptize that work of Plutarch. In short the commentary on living the virtuous life here is profoundly western and profoundly Christian.

There are very many editions of this book available, from what I've been able to ascertain this is the best available if you're looking to capture the language and commentary most close to Butler. Butler's primary language was English yet he possessed a mastery of French, Spanish, Italian, Latin, and later in his life Greek. (he claims that later in his life he could switch between reading both the English and Latin text of a certain saint effortlessly, yet he did not reach that level of comfort with Greek until the later part of his life)

This man was also very learned often reading first sources in their original languages, it is also said that for 30 years even from his childhood he would read these works of the Saints even while walking. So he certainly had a great grasp of context and a great love of these characters. Unfortunately it is not the best source for strictly historical accounts of the Saints. For the reader interested in a strictly historical edition of this, I would refer them to the Thurston edition, however as far as moral commentary goes it lacks the soul found in Butler's work. That being said for those critical thinkers out there this work does contain many citations and footnotes, most interesting to me is some of the more profound works he cites are either no longer published or have been lost to time. It is my honest belief that the errors found are entirely human errors. He simple did not have complete information available and when it came to questionable accounts of the Saints he elected to give them the benefit of the doubt.

So all that being said to address some very valid criticisms.

* This book is very long, as it should be it covers about 1600 years of history. My counter point would be to not read this as one would a novel, but as sort of a daily devotional, taking time to read the Saint of the day rather than a straight through read.

* This book is full of typos. Given its length that is no surprise, they tend to be minor and grammatical in nature, however there is the option to amend it since it's a ebook.

* It is an ebook, honestly I'd prefer a printed copy but for 2$ it's quite the steal.

* Historical accuracy, he strives to give the best account possible but there are cases I've seen where his sources are not the strongest, so take the historicity with a grain of salt and remember the primary intention was moral commentary.

* As to the anti-semetism, I agree in part there are examples of such tropes, and you'll see the less politically correct variants of terms to describe Muslims as well. I find this more to be a fault of the sources he had cited than to his own malice given the obvious emphasis on moral virtue found is in commentary portions. If you're seeking an edition that censors that information out I recommend Thurston's edition.

Ultimately what this book is to me is the adult version of those children's editions of lives of the saints, which while profoundly insightful lack the depth of character that Butler breathes into them.

Review: The Rev. Alban Butler’s “Lives of the Saints”, first published in 1903, is probably the classic hagiography, and makes both a good resource and interesting browsing— there are all the famous saints that one might expect, but also others that I at least didn’t know, all organized and indexed both by saint’s name and by the day on which the Saint was traditionally honored. For each calendar day the primary saints are listed first with long biographies, plus other saints who share the day are given with somewhat shorter stories of their lives.

For example, I’m writing this on September 11, which I just learned is not only the Feast of Saints Protus and Hyacinthus, Martyrs, who receive quite long biographies, but also of the Egyptian St. Pophnutius, who was tortured during the persecutions of the early Church, and of St. Patiens, the Archbishop of Lyons in the Fifth Century.

While each saintly biography serves to teach us about the history of our faith, that was never Fr. Alban Butler’s intent. Rather, he has provided us with wonderful models and exemplars, on which to try to model our own lives.

Highly recommended.

Review: Updated to include some more recent Saints and as such has nearly 1500 total in this book. Reading only confirms that man can be quite committed to one's faith and shows the best one can be, but in experiencing such enlightenment you also see how horrible those among us can be to their fellow man. The brutality endured by many leaves little to question that some possessed something greater than the many others. A well authored book with one captivating story after another. A true testament that blessed individuals do walk among us.
