Review: Danny Meyer tells his story exceptionally well and runs his business the way the best of the best tell you to do it-execute your vision, pay attention to your customer and pay attention to detail. This is an autobiography in which the lessons of life and business cannot be separated.
Having dined at Union Square Cafe(food was great) and 11 Madison Park(this was an incredible experience) I demanded that my kids get me this book for Christmas. The fact that it is a quick read is due to the absorbing content not the size.
What a treat to read how he took a childhood vision and gradually turned it into a multi-faceted company with more than 1,000 people without losing touch with his roots. His attention to his staffs' needs and his customers' needs, his listening skills and the means with which he elicits feedback, responds to and solves problems as a means of self-improvement reflect his sense of fun.
Danny Meyer shows that his greatest guide was his ability to learn from people around him and his desire to delight customers with something unique and special. Any CEO will learn volumes from reading this book regardless of the business.

Review: Danny Meyer's Setting the Table is an autobiography mostly about his years as a restaurateur.

Even thought this book is an autobiography, this book is practically a how-to book on running a small business mainly about managing people, maintaining customer relationship, and setting up a business. Even though this book focuses on running restaurants, I think topics can cross over to other businesses. The first part of the book is autobiographical but the how-to part starts in the middle of the book.

This book was recommended by Jim Cramer in his book Getting Back to Even.

There is a lot of takeways in this book - a long list. The ones that some to mind:
- Make sure your product is clearly not confusing
- "Who said that cannot be done?"
- Find the "overwhelming" employees, steer clear of the "whelming", and avoid the "underwhelming".
- There are some people who just want to be average.

There is little doubt that Meyer loves food. It is a good thing I watch Top Chef in order to appreciate his perspective as a food lover and restaurateur. Also from reading this book, now I know why my favorite restaurants, particularly the upscale restaurants, treat me the way they do, even though I dress shabby.

I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to be an entrepreneur or running a business, particularly in the restaurant business.

Title: Humble Brag fest

Review: All this guy does is humble brag about the places he's been, and the places he owns. Very little instruction or lessons in it. Sad, because by all accounts he's a very accomplished restauranteur. It's almost like he was just trying to chronicle his life, while giving very little advice to restauranteurs. Add a dash of NYC snootiness, and you have this book!

Review: This is a phenomenal understanding of hospitality plus one of the best pieces of advice and wisdom available for any business entrepreneur. The book is long on details about the specifics of Danny's restaurant business growth, but the value of his insights and wisdom makes it worth reading the whole thing, even it you don't have any interest in restaurants.

Title: The best book on business practices EVER!

Review: This was unquestionably the most influential book I have read in more than 500 relating to business practices. Applicable to many businesses including elective surgical management, this book establishes a near outline of how to handle the most challenging customers and succeed. I have recommend the book and purchased and given it as gifts to those I care most about.
