Title: Unacceptable Handling of Rapist Forgiveness Scene

Review: I was enjoying the book as another generic gay romance novels in the Regency era, nothing special but still generally enjoyable -- until one of the last chapters. I read this genre frequently for a brain vacation and enjoy them; I am realistic about what to expect; and still, I was so angry and shocked at this totally insane and inappropriate ending that I am writing this review to warn off others.

TW: Rape
I apologize for spoilers, but y'all should know: one of the main characters had a memory of being tied up by his drunk roommate who does it to let a friend rape him. While overcoming a traumatic memory/history is the norm for many of these books, so the trauma itself wouldn't make the book bad.... the book then ends with a scene in which the rape-abetting roommate finds the main character after several years and apologizes -- and is FORGIVEN IMMEDIATELY, with, direct quote: "I forgive you what you did. [He] is a beast but you were drunk." And then plans on getting beers with him as friends.

Like... somehow the rapist and the man who tied him down purposefully to allow the rape are cut from two totally different cloths, and one action is forgivable but the other not? It doesn't matter who did the penetration... they both participated in the rape.

Terrible writing, terrible plotting, terrible everything. The author did this as a plot device to show that "if this man can change, so can my love interest." As though all it takes is an apology to forgive rape and prove someone has changed. To note, the apology was: "I was a bastard. I tried to find a way to apologize. I was horrified. We'd been drinking and he was complaining about not finding a wench to bed and he suggested you." That was it. That was the apology that led the main character to forgive him immediately for TYING HIM DOWN AS PREP FOR AN ASSAULT and be merrily pals again.

Do not read this book and support this author. I think this author should learn from their mistakes, create a new pen name, and write books that do NOT promote the idea that being drunk makes you less accountable for rape and that rapists only need apologize vaguely and then a friendship can resume.

I see what the author was attempting to do, but man, did they miss the mark COMPLETELY.

Review: An apology a years later, a rather half-hearted apology at that, for having aided in the rape of the main character and suddenly all was forgiven and the trauma of the rape simply disappeared. This is not believable but does manage to be offensive. I have enjoyed this author's work in the past and have no clue what he was thinking when he wrote this. But I advise not reading it.

Review: M/M fiction has mostly fallen into a rut lately, but I found The Gentleman and the Spy to show much more originality than I've sadly grown used to. One of the giveaways that I would enjoy this book was that the plot of the mystery was destined to peak earlier than is usual, which is a good sign, because it shows that the book has created interesting characters the writer is not willing to let go of in a curt, facile, one-line wrap up. Indeed, the whodonit part of the story is a little clunky, while still entertaining. But it is later that I began to develop a fondness for many of the players, and not just the two main men. I certainly hope that the book is setting us up for further adventures of Magnus and Toby.

The one thing that made me squirm at regular intervals was the use of the word "homosexual." I never actually picked an exact date for the book's setting, but this word did not enter even the scientific world in England until the first decade of the 20th century, and it would be far later that it would find it's way into conversational use. Such care was used in choosing other marvelous words:
"Toby rested his wet umbrella in the majolica stand by the door..." that this one fell clumsily amidst the gifts.

Title: Another Top Notch Effort

Review: With two excellent series behind him ("Mahu and "Have Body, Will Guard") Neil Plakcy could be forgiven if he came up with a bit of a miss when he tackles historical fiction for the first time.

But Plakcy is dependable in so many ways that it's only a few pages into this one that you realize we have another two totally opposite, yet completely compatible, MCs to entrance us.

That he manages to do it while immersing us in a perfect Victorian England setting with all its social complexities and foibles laid bare for our entertainment--and disgust--is all the more remarkable.

In Lord Magnus Dawson (on the cover, woof!) and the commoner Toby Marsh Plakcy has given us a perfectly wonderful pairing who have their pride and prejudice issues but also pent up desires to find the right man.

That they come together as Lord and valet in a mystery that is not as complicated as it seems but still neatly laid out and done over, is an achievement that may have floundered in the hands of a less experienced author.

This one has the seedlings of a series, but even if it doesn't turn out that way it's another pleasant ride for Plakcy fans and a must read for those who have not had the pleasure of his craft as yet.

Title: Sadly boring

Review: As I read this I kept thinking of the amazing Think of England, by KJ Charles, set in a similar time period with a similar feel plot. It was light and bright and amazing. This felt plodding and pedestrian. I finished it, so that's an automatic 3 star rating for me, but it was too prosaic, and the plot was more interesting than the romance and the ending made no sense at all. Disappointing.

Title: A change of pace from Neil Plakcy

Review: Having been a fan of his three other contemporary M/M murder-mystery series, I was intrigued by this period piece. Neil Plakcy creates a vivid Victorian era murder mystery, introducing us to another pair of interesting and well-drawn heroes -- Magnus and Toby. Bringing opposites together is a Plakcy specialty and these two are certainly an intriguing pair. I look forward to seeing more of these two and how they navigate the social structure of Victorian England as a same-sex partnership.
