Title: Excellent Life Lessons

Review: I saw a video with the author speaking about his father to what appeared to be a commencement ceremony, and sought out the book afterwards. This is a quick read, but the life lessons in it will challenge you, make you reflect on your life, and have you sit back and think on how you can be a better person as well as make a difference in the world. I picked this up for $3.99 in the Kindle store, and certainly received a heck of a lot more in return.

Review: After seeing a video of the author sharing wisdom from a third grade dropout in a commencement address, I immediately bought the book and read it. Since I have several hundred books already on my Kindle, I don't usually add new books unless they're free. But I was so impacted by the speech that I couldn't wait to read the book. That demonstrated the theme of the book--make an impact rather than an impression.

The book didn't have quite as much impact as the live speech, but I wasn't disappointed. Rick Rigsby learned how to stand firm from his father, a third grade dropout who manifested character and integrity. The wisdom of his father's generation has been lost in later generations, and the author wants everyone to have the common sense--and above all, the common decency--that he learned from his father's word and example.

I'm only a generation younger than his father, and I was raised with the same values by wise parents who exhibited utmost integrity and character. Everything the author wrote resonated with my own experience. How much better our society would be if younger people learned this wisdom.

Review: Being from the same generation as the father, I continued reading the book in recognition of the same values instilled in me by my parents . It is an accurate description of that generation as well as an accurate description of shortcomings of the next generation. Good life advice for all.

Title: Good book- Speech was better

Review: While this book certainly contains lots of timeless truths, I made the mistake of listening to Rigsby's commencement speech first. The book simply was not as good, in my opinion. I was hoping it would expand on the speech but I don't think it did, at least not to my expectation level (which may have been too high). Still got 3 stars from me because of the wisdom contained within, but only 3 because of the personal let down.

Title: A Father's View and Legacy for His Son and for All

Review: I saw the author talking about this book about his father, on television one day and just had to order it. What wisdom in such few pages. It is an easy read but a book that bears reading again and maybe, again. His father may have only completed the third grade, but he gave me a real education in life within the pages of this book.

Review: I like many others listened to the speech Dr. Rigsby gave before reading the book. What I found interesting was that Dr. Rigsby wrote a book about common sense that has failed in the current generations. The book spoke on lessons and understandings that I was raised on as well though I was an 80s child. Perhaps because my upbringing happened in Eastern Europe is why at 35, I connect with the older generations more then the younger ones. Knowing the value of hard work. The only real downside to the book was that it wasn’t written as a story but as a speech. And speeches are hard to really penetrate in book form. I would have wished for this book to really go into his background with his father maybe even chronologically as opposed to jumping from different timelines. But that’s just a personal preference. Would recommend for anyone to read.

Title: Fast spoken narration

Review: I really enjoyed the content and subject of the book. However, Mr Rigsby's narration was a bit hurried, spoken fast, with barely a pause between paragraphs much less chapters. This would be understandable, as most people are not accustomed to reading an entire book aloud much less recording an audiobook. Normally, I have to increase narration speed on most audiobooks, but with this one, I had to slow it down. Even then, there were very few pauses or breaks in his narration. I had read and listen at the same time, or just read without the audio. I would have enjoyed the audio so much more if the author's narrationhad been more natural and relaxed.
