Title: They did the author dirty with this print. DO NOT recommend

Review: Awful awful quality print. For a book on Design Aesthetics it sure gave zero f*s about quality or even formatting. The paper quality is poor and thin enough to see the next page beneath it, the font alignment is strangely tight, I don’t know why it’s force justified but sure made it hard to look at.

On top of that, it was mailed in a envelope with no backing. The book is so thin it had no structural integrity so it clearly just got folded and torn at some point. I missed the return window is the only reason I still have it.

Review: I got this books for a college class and found myself learning a lot more than I had expected. In this book you examine why, in Japan, things look the way they do and are built in the ways they are. You really delve into the cultural significance as well as the spiritual, What you take away from this book is an understanding of the why the materials that were used in feudal buildings were and are still used today. Not a boring book at all. It does get dark sometimes while reading, no pun intended, but nothing too drastic. The read was smooth and I retained a lot of what I read. This book is a classic, and gives you a great perspective into Japanese aesthetics as a historical driving force in Japan. It also allows for you to make your own conclusions on if aesthetics are still present in Japan to this day and if its existence is still relevant to Japanese culture. It is not a very long book at all and you can knock it out in a very short while. Though it is short, you will have a better understanding of Japanese sociology as well as the reasons why Japan has formed the way it has. Overall, I felt this book offered a lot. This book has been around for a while, and I am glad that I got around to reading it. If you are interested in Japan at all, please take a look at this book and get a feel for the country, more than just the superficial and stereotypical "sushi" and "manga" perspectives. You'll take away a lot more than anyone else who just looks at current Japan ever will. Light, easy read with very insightful explanations of Japanese sociological workings and their reasons for existing. Recommend.

Title: Draft of a translation, published by mistake.

Review: The book itself (I have read it before) is a wonderful take on Japanese aesthetic sensuality, but this very translation... it is monstrously messy. Sentences repeated, tautology, obscure phrases, disjointed idioms... I wonder who had the nerve to publish such a translation and why they didn't look for professional editor's help before doing so?

Review: The least this publisher could have done was to spell the author’s name correctly in the listing. The Amazon listing shows “Tanazak” but the author’s name is Tanazaki. Seriously. This edition reads like a poor draft translation that was slammed onto Amazon to pad the publisher’s accounts. No care was given to the details. Recommended only with these reservations.

Title: Obscured by Light

Review: This is a gem of a book. Beautifully translated by Harper and Seidensticker, this series of brief meditations on Japanese aesthetics moves seemingly randomly among topics as diverse as theatre, women, lacquerware, food, toilets, hotels, and electric lights. The passage on the Japanese toilet is worth the price of the book, even if it is unclear how serious Tanizaki was being. And the section on lacquerware is one to be treasured and read again. Tanizaki mourns the passing of much of what he sees as the essence of Japan's shadow-enshrined aesthetic sensibility. But what can be done? In the end, even he finds he must acknowledge certain benefits of modern life, and he refuses to go farther than he deems practical (or affordable) in recreating the material life of the past for himself. Nevertheless, his observations clearly come from the soul of a man who feels a combination of loss and appreciation for a time when light and shadow revealed precisely what needed to be revealed, and no more. If you have never thought that sipping soup, bathing, or using the toilet could be an aesthetic experience, read this book.

Review: An enduring classic based upon what may seem like "progress": what is lost when, in 1930s Japan, the electrical grid and incandescent lighting dispel shadow in places like shrines where NOT being able to see everything clearly, and so being obliged to use one's imagination, has been valued?

Title: Surpringly Accurate After All These Years

Review: This was an interesting book about light and shadows, but it's more or less a commentary on the differences between cultures and a desire to maintain a cultural identity and values in the modern age. I use the term "modern" loosely, because while the book was written several decades ago (the publication date is listed as 1977, but the essay appears to have originated much earlier), the basic principles of aesthetics still apply today. We're still grappling with influences in architecture, technology, and design that have the potential to change the manner and pace through which we approach life.
