Title: Well informed, written for Western practitioners

Review: This book definitely lived up to my hopes for it, having extensive exercises, breaking down pronounciation and punctuation by comparison to common English words (particularly useful in recognizing appropriate vowel sounds when reading diacritics, which are key in designating vowel pronounciation, unlike English language where the vowel changes primarily by its relationship to surrounding letters). The sanskrit characters are addressed individually with mantra and correspondences so that one can gain a fundamental understanding of the sanskrit teachings on sound, thus opening a deeper potential understanding of the energetic signature of longer mantric formulae. Common mantras for the gods, for various practical intentions, as well as for chakras, planets, etc are all presented with word by word translation to allow for English speaking practitioners to contemplate and perhaps understand the sentences as they are being recited. Overall, this work is excellent, particularly for those who seek to incorporate the art of mantra into an overall spritual and magical practice, but may lack a conversant tutor. Western Yoga practitioners may also find this to be an enlightening introduction to the deeper philosophical and technical considerations toward mantras, which they may already have learned yet which often do not come with the philosophical education necessary to bring the full depth of the practice into conscious understanding. All-in-all, unless you are highly knowledgeable in sanskrit, yogic and even tantric tradition, this book has something to offer. It has already enhanced my personal practice immeasurably.

Review: As a practicer of tantric yoga and a librarian, I read a LOT of books about yoga, Kundalini, and Tantra. This series by Phillip & Leigh Hurley is one of the best series available. It feels like a well keep secret waiting to be discovered. I’m surprised there aren’t hundreds of reviews for these books. When the student is ready, the guru will appear. These thin volumes are packed with so much pertinent information you can re-read it multiple times and gain deeper insights each time. You can begin working with the mantra’s right away. The book provides a pronunciation guide and a calligraphy guide to practice writing out the scared names. Bonus is the bibliography in the back of the book. A great resource. I’m hoping the Hurley’s have one more book to write on Vedic Astrology that would complete this series.

Review: This is a really great book on the art and science of mantra. It gives the aspiring yogi/sadhaka the tools to deepen their meditation and improve their lives. I like the book because it reveals the meaning of sanskrit letters and how to use them for developing ones' own mantra. I am really not aware of any other book that provides this insightful information. Mantra gives us the keys through sound/vibration to better understand and affect our world towards harmony and enlightenment.
