In this groundbreaking book, a leading clinical psychiatrist redefines how we think about and treat victims of trauma. A "stunning achievement" that remains a "classic for our generation." (Bessel van der Kolk, M.D., author of The Body Keeps the Score).
Trauma and Recovery is revered as the seminal text on understanding trauma survivors. By placing individual experience in a broader political frame, Harvard psychiatrist Judith Herman argues that psychological trauma is inseparab

Title: Trauma and Recovery says it all
Date: Reviewed in the United States on December 29, 2021
Review: This is an exceptionally lucid book about trauma and recovery. It delineates all phases of the experience of trauma--both single moments and protracted experiences. It helps one understand what to expect in the aftermath of trauma--the traumatic experience is only the beginning of the pain. It helps one understand how healing may take place--what a bumpy road it can be even with expert help. The only aspect that is missing is a focus on intergenerational trauma, and particularly on ongoing racial trauma. Trauma makes the world go around and Herman explores it with expert knowledge, many cases, and great empathy. It's a core text on this subject and I highly recommend it.

Title: Thorough Work on Understanding & Treating Trauma
Date: Reviewed in the United States on April 1, 2016
Review: Excellent, in-depth book on various types of trauma and the effects & treatments.
There is some political slant, but it is not the focus of the book. If you are serious about understanding trauma and people, this is an incredible book. I'm amazed how thorough it is. I'm amazed this much information can be in one book that is only 276 pages long and not a text book. It's well-written. There is some sophisticated vocabulary in it...Several times I had to look up words in my online dictionary to fully understand what the author is communicating. She is wonderfully gifted in her approach to this subject.
She starts with history, goes into trauma and various treatments. She delineates differences of acute trauma of a single event vs chronic traumas. She delineates further on how even just one good support can help someone with trauma, vs the results of someone experiencing trauma yet having no validating support. One of her key points is Chaper 6..."A New Diagnosis"... discussing that complaints of chronically traumatized people are not well-understood. For example:... "Survivors of child abuse who become patients appear with a bewildering array of symptoms....They may collect a virtual pharmacopeia of remedies: one for headaches, another for insomnia, another for anxiety, another for depression. None of these tends to work very well, since the underlying issues of trauma are not addressed".
She talks about getting the correct diagnosis. Investigating under the symptoms, thoroughly knowing the history. After that, the treatments are not just medication or psychotherapy. It's often both, but in a certain way... Safety first, then trauma work, then reconnection. It even goes into the strengths & support the therapist needs to treat people who have experienced trauma as well as details of individual vs group therapies. This book also discusses medications, but doesn't have a multitude of pages devoted to medications.
Please understand my description here is just a slight outline. Trauma and Recovery is an incredibly thorough and well-written work. It also includes many pages of its referenced sources.
The epilogue discusses many things including recent studies, advances and programs since the book was written 2 decades ago.
I highly recommend this book.

Title: 1 book on Trauma on my shelf
Date: Reviewed in the United States on July 25, 2021
Review: This book has been thoroughly updated since its original publication. It helped me through an extremely difficult time in the 1990s. I believe Hermanβs book was groundbreaking in that it made very clear that PTSD is not something that only combat soldiers and Veterans experience. It was extremely well researched, and this recent update has been tediously researched am referenced. If youβre looking for the most authoritative book on trauma, this is the one I would want on my shelf.

Title: Finally. Addressing the issue of women's Complex PTSD
Date: Reviewed in the United States on February 17, 2017
Review: We have struggled to keep focus on women who suffer from PTSD, as most commonly referred to as only a disease from those returning from war. Not only does the author have long-term clinical experience with this disease but has also helped to define and explore exactly how it affects the person struggling with this misunderstood disease as well as the effect on the family and the community.
I spent many years in the human services field working with women with violence degrees violence in their life, with the special focus on women disabled by domestic violence. In the mid-80s it was your most impossible to get a clear understanding and diagnosis PTSD in Women. Herman has written the classic reference book for this disease. She has gone into many of its affects and effects and gives a wonderful information about working with, helping, and keeping The client in the loop with her own treatment and understanding of this disease. Do not work with women who live with PTSD without first consulting this primary textbook and ultimate tool in working with the many many facets of differing post traumatic stress. If you are working in any position in human services this is a must-have, must-read book.

Title: Enthralling book
Date: Reviewed in the United States on May 18, 2017
Review: Incredible book. I am reading it for a course in clinical treatment for trauma. The book is an extra-ordinary, moving, tour de force that moves elegantly from the history of the idea of trauma (its origins in French studies of hysteria) through the "discovery" of PTSD with war veterans to the feminist uncovering of rape, domestic violence, and child abuse. Herman argues that although medical professionals and society recognize that some people suffer from a malady of depression, anxiety, uncontrolled fear, dissociation, and pain they are not always willing to give this condition a name or to treat it unless a political movement comes along and makes the case that an entire group of neglected people is suffering and deserves help. At any given time there are some groups (vets) whose suffering is recognized while another group (women or children) whose suffering is not recognized or whose symptoms are patholgized or repressed or ignored. At the present moment, I think Dr. Herman would agree, the study of trauma has expanded past the first two groups (war veterans and women/children) to include refugees, immigrants, and minorities in an oppressive political system. This book is beautifully written--it is both academic and intellectual, and accessible to people who are suffering and want to understand their own experience more.
