Title: A must read for anyone considering law school!

Review: I have read probably a dozen of these though my own application process of law school, and I wish I had this one in my collection about 3 years ago. I try not to think about the time, heartache, and money I could have saved if I had read this book and followed the suggested application schedule. The book was so easy to read, even though I am no longer pursuing a law degree, I still could feel the stress of the process. The way Applying to Law School approaches the problem, and the style of narration, really eases the stress of the entire applications process.

One main reason that I really like this book is I found the conversational approach so much easier to digest then the typical dry textbook; `get in to the best schools by getting in to the best schools.' Alternating between funny and thoughtful, the author's own experience really shows through. Everything from the proposed schedule to the realistic approach to rankings to the personal anecdotes flowed naturally and comfortably.

The second reason I enjoyed this book is the scholarly undertone throughout the entire book. It is like sitting in a pub, having a pint with your fun, smart best friend. Yes, he knows the big words, and knows something about everything, but he isn't a dick about it, all he wants is to help you out with your own problem. Even in the dry advice about taking the LSAT, I could really tell that the author could probably write some of the LSAT questions, let alone give good structured advice.

Third, there really is great advice throughout the book. As mentioned before, JD Miller lays out a schedule over the course of 18 months on how to organize the complex dance of paperwork, tests, visits and decisions. This seems simple, but it truly can only be learned by experience, as I found to my detriment once. The schedule also sets up the chapters, as he goes through the schedule bit by bit, explaining and advising without being boring.

JD Miller also provides a great deal of advice on a subject pivotal to every aspiring lawyer, but rarely mentioned in all the other books of this type I have read. Miller encourages the reader to take a good, hard look at the reality of cost, and the changing face of compensation in the legal field today. While possible to come directly out of law school making six figures, for the vast majority, it is very, very highly improbable. With the average law student exiting school in 2010 with $92,500 of debt (according to the National Law Journal), and the average compensation for graduates who found jobs hovering at between $77,500 and $86,000, discharging that debt before retirement is no joking matter.

Miller goes into detail, forcing the reader to answer hard questions as to the internal motivation of the foray into law school. However, like a good friend, he is supportive and helps the reader chart a path toward exiting school with as little debit as possible. This advice alone should be required reading to anyone looking into going to law school.

Finally, there is an entire chapter devoted to law school visits, and reminds the reader to look around, not for how comfy the chairs are or what the night life is like, but real questions that are often overlooked in the rush of a visit. Questions like how clean are the bathrooms? (Often a good indicator of what building maintenance is like, and whether or not you will have a cold classroom in the middle of January.) What is foot traffic into the buildings like? (Also can be phrased as how often will noise interrupt your studying.) This type of advice I did not find in any of the other books I had read on this subject.

I actually enjoyed reading this book, despite no longer being in the hunt for a position at a law school. I am thoroughly recommending this book to anyone and everyone I know looking to go to law school, I even bought a hard copy to give to a young friend. I cannot wait to read his next installment: "How to prepare for your first year of law school." If this book is any indication of the author's skill at relating experience, I beg of him to write A Primer for Understanding Women.

Title: Waste of money

Review: This book is full of information that you can find easily on the internet, provides no insightful information about the law admission process, and gives terrible advice. The section in the book that suggests that attending a law school with the hopes of transferring to another was particularly troubling. It is EXTREMELY unlikely that one will be in a position to transfer, you should only attend a school that you would be happy graduating from. If you do a Google search, you will find several credible sources to support my claim. While this book is cheaper than some other books aimed at providing insight into the law school admission process, it's not worth the money.

Title: Extremely readable, full of great nuts and bolts information

Review: Surprizingly, for this type of work, this is an extremely readable little book, written with a rather endearing self-deprecating tone and a good sense of humor. Most importanly, it is full of relevant nuts-and-bolts observations and good advice. I particularly appreciate the fact that it is down to earth, presents the good, bad, and ugly of the law-school application process, and, through it, remains calm and level-headed. This makes it a highly valuable reference for those who are contemplating applying to law school.
