Review: Well, THAT was some book! Three different sections, each reflecting one subtitle to Adam Frankel's memoir, "The Survivors: A Story of War, Inheritance, and Healing". Beginning as a book about his maternal grandparents' survival in the Holocaust and their move to the United States, Frankel writes about the "inheritance" he believes his mother, Ellen, received from her parents and the shocks that occurred in Ellen's life that continue to impact on Adam's life. The third subtitle, "Healing", refers to the healing many people in the Frankel/Perecman families have done in the last few years.

Adam Frankel is a writer. That's one of the ways he makes a living; he was one of Barack Obama's speech writers during Obama's first term. But the book is not about politics. It's about Adam Frankel's basic sense of identity and feeling of familial belonging that Adam begins in WW2 Lithuania. The first section is about how his mother's family survived brutal murders and concentration camp stays. How his grandparents met in a DP camp, married, and moved to the United States, settling in New Haven, Connecticut. They raised a family of four, including Ellen, while "Zayde" worked as a master watch repairman.

Now, all families have "secrets", and the Perecman family had more than its share. Every secret was precipitated by an event, and the cover-ups often make the act or event even worse. The middle section of Frankel's book is perhaps the most impactful because of the acts that Adam's mother, Ellen, did. Simply that, "did". Ellen Frankel had always been a free-spirit but as she grew up, she began to do unsettling things. It was a family secret, "we don't talk to outsiders about our problems", and her mental breakdowns worsened as she aged. Adam, because he mostly lived with his mother after her and his father's divorce, was the main recipient of her often crazy actions. He was very close to his father, Stephen Frankel and his family, and luckily was able to spend time with them as he grew up. They were the stabilizing factor in his life.

The only part of the book I possibly differ with is that Adam ascribes his mother's mental difficulties to being the daughter of Holocaust survivors. There's been a lot written since Helen Epstein's 1979 memoir on the subject.

I won't write any more about the contents except to say, the book is a roller-coaster ride. Is everybody okay after the last secret is told? I certainly hope so. Adam Frankel is such a good writer and he knows how to frame the events and the repercussions.

Review: I have read several fiction and non-fiction WWII books recently and I thought that The Survivors: A Story of War, Inheritance, and Healing was another account of the victims of an unimaginable age , this time from the perspective of a descendant of holocaust survivors. The first quarter or so of the book was indeed, both a holocaust account and a detailed family history, which made for some slow reading mired in a great deal of description. But this memoir is indeed an onion of a book. While it is a story about the heart-wrenching survival of the author’s grandparents through Hitler’s reign, that layer gives way to a second layer, a third, a fourth layer, and the narrative keeps peeling away, working toward a rather elusive ‘heart of the matter.’ As promised in the title, the book demonstrates how, step by step, one injustice morphs into a legacy of pain and survival. Frankel gets at the very core of dependence, independence, intentional and unintentional trauma, forgiveness, and healing.

The author makes enough use of science and the science of psychology that his journey is credible as well as enough personal vulnerability that his journey becomes the journey of all humanity. I have to admit that in places his transparency made me a bit squeamish, but that was the point after all.

This is one of those transformative books that takes off in one place, and lands in an entirely different place, transforming our perspective in the process. The Survivors proved to me once again that suffering can be generational, that our identity is both our inheritance and our destiny, one that we both passively receive and actively shape, and most importantly that we do not exist and function without those who came into our lives before, with, and after us.

Review: I came across this author from one of my favorite podcast Family Secrets. I absolutely loved that episode and decided to read the book. I really enjoyed it. It was a little long winded at time but I think that was needed to convey the story. Good read.

Review: Bought this book for several reasons: being a non-Jew I wanted to better understand the holocaust impact of American Jewish families today. Born in Germany as an army brat and having lived there ten years, I was familiar with many of the places mentioned, as well of the Nazi use of tunnels to conceal their treachery.
The impact on succeeding Jewish families was tremendous and only by the heroic efforts of a few courageous Righteous Among the Nations individuals, the devasting onslaught delivered by Allied determination, and the triumph of astute individuals over their circumstance did a very few survive. My Jewish GF subscribed to Ancestry only to discover that there was NO IMMEDIATE FAMILY alive but the few known members, save 4th cousins who didn't want recognition or a reminder. Being Jewish is a permanent bond of the few having survived annihilation. This is a family story about Adam Frankel's forebearers survival in the worst of times.

Additionally, Adam had a personal revelation about his true mother and father. I too had a similar discovery of a family unknownst to me, that had remained a deep secret in my life. Today, family secrets are harder to conceal and the circumstances that created them are only different today by time and place. Humans fall in love, have babies and with God's grace are raised by Josephs. Adam's upbringing and rise to prominence has many parallels.
So glad I bought the book and discovered more about myself
