โ€œA big-hearted story thatโ€™s as sweet as it is awesome.โ€ โ€”R.J. Palacio, author of Wonder โ€œAn honest, emotionally rich take on disability, family, and growing up.โ€ โ€”Kirkus Reviews (starred review) In the tradition of Wonder and Out of My Mind

Review: I loved Ellieโ€™s story! Her relationships with her mom, grandparents, and community are told in a true middle grade voice. I so appreciate stories that feature kids who are outside popular โ€œcliquesโ€ as the reality is thatโ€™s the case for most kids.I also loved that there is a thread of leaning into what makes you unique: for Ellie, itโ€™s her baking skills; for her friends, singing, knowing facts, and building. I like that kids this age can be told that what they love is important! The only section that caused me pause and is worth noting is a scene where Ellie and her friend are talking and her friend mentions that they are a โ€œtribe.โ€ When Ellie says that she doesnโ€™t understand - she thinks of the word tribe referring to Native American tribes - her friend corrects her, whitewashing the term and applying it to any group of friends. In the US, this is a big deal as Native Americans have been telling anyone who will listen that the broad use of the word is hurtful. Since this book featured an all-white cast and using the term that way goes un-challenged in the book, I thought it was worth mentioning. And when read by kids, discussed.Ellieโ€™s complex relationships with her family, her friends, and her own health provide the backdrop for a really great character arc.

Review: My daughter was assigned to read a book report over the summer for a book report and this tome was one of our choices. We originally picked it for 2 reasons. Firstly, TBH, out of all the books she could choose from, this one was the shortest, making it a win in her book. But, secondly, my brother was handicapped and in a wheelchairโ€ฆ.so I wanted to see if this book could impart a new perspective for my 7 yr old for those who get around differently than most and who may be a little different. So that being said, do you ever have those moments where you choose a book for one reason or another, only to realize later that the book was a blessing sent from above? That it speaks to you in such a visceral level that you wouldnโ€™t have believed it if someone told you how different you would be after reading it? Well friends I am here to say that has happened to me. My daughter and I both read the book, her for the assignment and me bc I like to read and wanted to be able to know the story in case she needed help. This book spoke to me on a very basic, emotional level. All the fears, anxiety, hope and love I had for my brother, who has been passed away for many years now, came rushing back. I found myself caring for Ellie as I did for Jeffrey. Rooting for her to succeed, her desire for independence though baking, her fears for her grandfather, and also for herselfโ€ฆ.her sense of belonging through new friendships, all of it. Just so many feels, presented in a non-preachy, upbeat, very funny and realistic way. This book, while sad at times, is a story that anyone who feels sorry for themselves needs to read. This spunky, non-quitting, pre-teen is the kind of person so many folks could use in their life, even if only for a little while and through the written word. She doesnโ€™t quit, keeps going when things are tough and is a devoted daughter, granddaughter and friend. Her attitude is to never quit but doesnโ€™t deny her emotions and feelings either. Just a very funny, realistic and ultimately hopeful story. If you have a child, a student or just some smart-a$$ kid who needs a reality check, let them read this book. It is uplifting and demonstrates the power of positive thinking and action even when times are tough. I just canโ€™t recommend this one enough. So glad I read this, what a great blessing for me and for my kiddo!

Review: I love the book. From a readerโ€™s perspective, it flows well. The characters are developed and real. There is a real story there that makes you laugh and cheer. As a Mom of a special needs kid, this book rocks! We need more books like this that show what our kids can do and that they are people just like us. I was impressed with how seamlessly she brought issues like the girl being afraid that one day she would be put in a home, and the way in which she handles it.I love everything Jamie Sumner writes.

Review: I bought this for my daughter who is in Middle School, and picked it up to give a quick glance. I realized quickly that I would need to brew a cup of tea so I could sit and get to know Ellie and her family and friends for myself, and I am so glad I did. The characters and relationships in Roll With It grew and evolved and kept me involved, and I was actually not sure how the book would end. It was an engaging read that I truly enjoyed. (My daughter loved it as well.)
