Review: and the entire family to enjoy.

“Toyson’s Toy Shop” is an enjoyable story with themes that will spark conversations in both young and old: happiness, body issues, acceptance, moving, having and doing what’s “normal” for others, friendship and more. This book can be as light or deep as the adults steer it to be.

Left to the young readers, I believe much of the textual nuances will go unnoticed due to the highly enjoyable and mostly humorous illustrations, by Ilja Berenznickas. The book has 4 short chapters with 26 pages of text, 16 full color illustrations and the cover artwork, in the Kindle version. It has the appearance of a crossover between picture book and chapter book; very appealing and inviting.

The story takes place in the toy store and the characters are both human and toys. It’s fun and fanciful while dealing with significant issues. Kids will enjoy the names “Noway & Jose”, (for the two boy-doll toys), and the various motivated characters in the store. Each is trying to become purchased, bought, find favor with someone who comes into the store and be taken home. This desire, longing, runs strongly thru the entirety of the book. More subtle, but interesting was the magic mirror that adds a whole additional level to this story as well as a hook for future volumes. These complexities allow “Toyson’s Toy Shop” to be enjoyed by a wide range of readers📚

Review: I really enjoyed this charmingbook about how even those who are seemingly unwanted can win over a heart. Lea Ben Shlomo's "Toyson's Toy Shop" is a beautiful story for all ages.

Behind the plot is a warm thread of love that has me smiling. Good stuff!

My experience with life is that sometimes we all feel different and unwanted but we are really loved. Often, we need to open our own hearts and accept love.

Review: This is the first (indie) book I've read (in awhile) that I came away from wondering how it's marketed? Or if the author had a specific audience in mind?

The structure is interesting, kinda reminiscent of Roald Dahl--not quite as high fantasy, but seemingly too long-winded for kids yet a weird fit for adults. I'm not interested in additional series', but I did enjoy it. I think what was weird?/novel?/not strong enough? about this book is that it didn't seem to have a protagonist, or a strong one. It's like a little of everyone has something to say.

Hilarious play and confusion on a popular American saying. Cool interplay between fantasy and children's as two separate genres, but not really? Subtle cool message of giving people (and things) a shot.

I give Toyson's Toy Shop 3 *1/2 bubblegums.

After previewing this book for the kids and spotting little character exchanges like this, I decided I would first read it to them before handing it over. And sure enough, watching the eyebrows raise - left one, right the other - and hearing the giggles after little ditties like this one above made me smile.
It's a wonderfully childish story, with varying distinguished characters, and an enjoyable read for both kids and parents. Looking forward to the second book in the series.

Review: There are not many children's books that teach healthy value, but this book does. The two toys (Noway and Jose) are the toys that are so different from other toys, and represent those who tend to be ignored and not respected in our society. We are all different and sometimes, the difference is not welcomed by the majority of the people. But such people often play important roles for the whole society. We all need each other. The face is in the front and always looked at, but the feet are ignored and not respected, but without the feet, the body cannot go anywhere.

Title: A mondegreen saves the toys

Review: I remember hearing the expression, “No way Jose” a lot when I was a kid. I hardly ever hear it now. However, in “Toyson’s Toy Shop” it is used all the time. A mondegreen, or a mishearing of this expression, is the basis for the plot twist in this story.

Meir’keh owns a toy warehouse. Bolt the carpenter is a furniture maker who wants to make toys. He is constantly trying to get Meir’keh to take his wooden toys, but Meir’keh does not think much of Bolt’s toy making abilities and always refuses. One day, Bolt leaves 2 new dolls he has made on a shelf in Meir’keh’s warehouse. When the truck driver comes to pick up deliveries for the local toy stores, he sees the dolls on the shelf and asks Meir’keh if he should take them and what does he call them. Meir’keh shouts out, “No way Jose,” but the truck driver thinks he is just telling him the names of the dolls, which he hears as “Noway” and “Jose,” and so he picks up the dolls and delivers them to the toy shop, unbeknownst to Meir’keh.

Meir’keh has a nephew to whom he gives toys from his warehouse as presents all the time. Yonatan, the nephew, ultimately has a sample of every toy in the warehouse, making it difficult for Meir’keh to come up with a new idea for a birthday present for his nephew. By now, it should be obvious where this story is going (although I haven’t read book 2 or book 3, so I don’t really know how it will end up), so I won’t say any more. Just get ready for “No way Jose” and Noway and Jose and a bunch of other toys in the mold of the movie “Toy Story” where the toys become animated when no one is around to see them.
