Review: This book really helped me deal with my son's speech delay with confidence. We already had him in speech therapy through our state's Early On program, which addresses delays in children under the age of 3. But we were faced with deciding on how to proceed when my son turns 3 in a few months. Thomas Sowell describes a very specific type of child in this book and his other book on the subject, "The Einstein Syndrome." The child will be bright, highly analytical, very strong-willed, possibly musically inclined or gifted. They might be already drawn to computers and puzzles and will probably have good memories. They will probably be delayed in social skills because of their late-talking but still be sweet or affectionate. They will probably come from a family with members in analytical careers (Sowell lists mathematicians, engineers, economists and pilots in this group) or who play musical instruments. While he emphasizes that testing may be necessary to determine if a late-talking child fits into this description, he also encourages parents to advocate for their children, seek independent testing outside a school system, and limit testing to a reasonable amount of time (not more than an hour). The main body of the book is case histories of multiple children. Some of these stories are heartbreaking, in that the the child was labeled as autistic or otherwise developmentally delayed, and then pigeonholed by their school system, even after further testing proved they were only delayed in speech. This book is almost 20 years old, so some of those practices may have changed (a school district having non-qualified professionals categorizing children as autistic, receiving extra funding for educating these children with delays or autism, not accepting outside testing, or refusing to put children back into a regular classroom as a result of improved speech.) I don't know, as we don't have our son in the public school system and currently have the intention of home schooling him regardless of speech delay.

While reading this book I felt like I was sometimes reading a description of my own child. My husband is a pilot; I was a math major before choosing a different educational focus. There are multiple musicians in our family. My son loves puzzles and building with Wedgits. He studies anything mechanical as close as he's allowed. He's strong willed, a problem solver and as independent as can be for an almost 3 year old. His social skills are average, but he is absolutely sweet with his little sister and the rest of our family. He's got a good memory. We had his hearing tested first before being referred to Early On, where he was evaluated to see if he qualified for services. When he qualified as having a more than 40% delay in expressive language, I was not surprised. But we were relieved to find out the rest of his development was at or above his age level. We were already working to get him to talk more, and I was reading everything I could about language delays. The speech therapist only meets with my son once a month, and we have seen her now four times. But suddenly, in the last month, he has had a language explosion. The therapist credits me for the improvement, and while I am definitely working with him all the time, I learned from "Late-Talking Children" that I could relax and not push my son to talk. We spend more time playing for fun now without a word goal in mind. The therapist even confirmed what my husband and I had decided. Our son does not need to continue speech therapy in the local school district when he turns 3.
To be clear, this book will help alleviate your fears if your child fits into the pattern Sowell describes. If he/she does not, please look elsewhere for help. And definitely get your child's hearing and development tested if you are worried. But don't let someone push your child into a category theyes don't fit into.

Review: When my neighbor recommended this book to me and told me it was only stories I remember thinking, "what good will that do?" Yet it was the most comforting and incredibly helpful book that this first-time mom of a late talking little boy could read. And yes, he's five now and talking like crazy. For parents who want data-driven information on the typical profile of a late talking child, this is it. And it's not scary, it's the complete opposite. It gives parents of these children the peace of mind to calm down and make the best choices for their kids, without jumping to some of the conclusions that the medical community are often apt to suggest. I know this book helped me make informed decisions about my child's education trajectory and helped me sleep at night. Most books of the topic urge you to seek intervention immediately but this one shows you what happens in most cases.

Review: This book saved our family a lot of grief, we knew our boy was "all there" but still silent at 4! We were being harassed from all sides to put him in "therapy" and get tested for all sorts of disorders, and admittedly we did break down and get some minimal testing done and tried speech therapy (for a very short time)...all to no avail, in fact they just made it worse (his behavior was awful at these sessions- when he's normally very sweet). I believed in what I had read here and also knowing my child, he is now 4 and 1/2 and is beginning to be a little chatterbox!!!! He just wasn't ready to speak yet. Every day now for the last month he just rattles out words and phrases and its getting clearer by the day too! If you have a child who isn't speaking yet and feel like there's nothing "wrong" this the book to read! Keep feeding them the educational info, even if there's no response it is going in, I have come to fully realize that over the last month!

Title: it made me feel a whole lot better....

Review: It made me feel a whole lot better that there are other parents out there experiencing the same problems and feelings that my husband and I are having. We are the parents of a bright three-year-old, who is speaking on a 1 1/2 year old level. He has a vocabulary of about thirty words right now, and he uses them correctly and in context. However, he is far behind his age group. My son and our families had many similarities to the children in Mr. Sowell's books, "Late-Talking Children" and "The Einstein Syndrome". However, I don't agree 100% with everything Mr. Sowell wrote, and I would never use one man's opinion as gospel. Use this book as advice to be listened to and judged by an informed mind and a parent's heart. Research, read, talk to professionals, but also listen to your gut where it concerns your child. Mr. Sowell makes a good argument for that.

Review: I read this book and it helped put into context my son's development. I think the real value of this book is to challenge yourself, and the psychologists, to evaluate all behaviours and get the right help.
