Review: I rarely write a review but felt the need. I bought a used version of this book that was described as" like new." It was not . The pages were water damaged and the cover had something on it that was greasy. Disappointed.

Review: I bought this book thinking it would be an eye opening experience and an escape into a wild world where Kaarlo Vatanen escapes the modern world with his hare to discover magic and freedom in a way that I hadn't perceived before. I had high hopes and perhaps they were too high. I found that while clever and well written the book's magic was a little flat for me. I am not sure if it's the translation or if the book just prattles along on a luke warm journey through Finland without much oomph. It wasn't very uplifting for me either and the read was a bit unrewarding.

The Year of the Hare is not a boring book and you can read it in an afternoon or two and it's pleasant and has some undercurrent of swirling meaning that is more than apparent. I have read The Life of Pi and found it to be much more substantial. The book jacket compares this book to The Life of Pi, but the comparison is lost on me.

I am certain Arto Paasilinna is very talented and his writing shines in the easy to read, entertaining prose. The story was entertaining enough and the writing had an other worldly quality to it but the adventures and story were not enough to be life altering, but it did provide a morsel of food for thought in a mild, soupy way. The story is comedic with Vatenen rambling about meeting a lot of different people and getting mixed up in different situations as most everyone falls in love with the hare (who is more of the central character), so it's cute and has some mild adventure and light comedy and social commentary.

If you want to read an adventure story that might change your point of view or get you to thinking (hard) - try to read The Life of Pi and let me know if you think the two books compare with one another. I recommend this book if you are a fan of the author or of Finnish lit, or if you need to kill some time in the airport. It's not a bad read it just isn't what it's hyped up to be.

Review: I first discovered The Year of the Hare as a Audible Daily Deal, which I enjoyed so much that I then purchased the book and experienced the story again through another medium. The author, Arto Paasalinna, is Finnish and the tale takes place in his native country, featuring a protagonist that falls into the genre of picaresque. Ultimately, the protagonist, Kaarlo Vatanen, abandons his job and bastardized marriage after hitting and injuring a hare with a vehicle while out on assignment, and decides to nurse the hare back to health and live with it in the wilderness. The two experience quite a few adventures, including: a wildfire, Russian detainment, stalking and hunting a bear, foreign diplomats, paranoid citizens, a thieving crow, and an alcoholic binge, just to list a handful of them. While the book has healthy doses of humor, the reader is given plenty to mull over, if so inclined, of a philosophical and social bent. Thoreau's oft-quoted (and just as often taken out of context) passage "The mass of men live lives of quiet desperation and go the grave with the song still in them" applies beautifully to this novel, because the character learns to lead a more satisfying (and adventurous) life that doesn't depend on the material, and finds this more fulfilled life in the most unexpected of places, most often in the wilderness or thereabouts. I consider it no small tragedy that The Year of the Hare and The Howling Miller (another wonderful read) are the only books available by Arto Paasalinna in English. Paasalinna has written somewhere around 35 novels, and we English-speaking folks only get two, though I'm hoping some enterprising publisher rectifies that in the near future, otherwise, I may be forced to attempt Finnish.

Review: Arto Paasilinna is one of Finland's most translated authors and The Year of the Hare is his most popular novella, first published in 1975. It is a sort of return to nature story and a rejection of civilization - obviously Rousseauian in sentiment, the book is very popular among the French, and Romantics everywhere. The hare is the wild heart in us all - injured by a car, the main character nurses it back to health and then takes to the woods where he finds an ongoing struggle between taming the wilderness versus going feral, one often leading to the other. It's cute, often funny, and has a geographic path that can be followed on a map that helps one to learn more about Finlands more obscure locations in the north. Apparently many of the characters who cross the pages of this "picaresque novel with an ecological theme" are stereotypical Finnish. In the end Paasilinna saves the hare but kills the bear (and the crow and the forest etc..), it is cynical, it is Finnish.

Review: Truly extraordinary in writing and imagination, with a good dose of poetry and commentary on society. Reminds of the films of Jacque Tati but with more realism.
Will appeal to all animal and nature lovers (although some annals were harmed during the writing of this book), and to lovers of free will and true liberty over conventions and alienation.

Indeed.

Vatanen is the protagonist of this madcap masterpiece of the picaresque. A journalist by profession, his life veers in an unexpected direction after his car hits and injures a wild hare. Vatanen rejects all his responsibilities and relationships and embarks on an intense moment-to-moment existence.

From this new perspective, his former life is revealed as absurd. Our hero falls in with various other misfits and a series of charming and unlikely adventures ensue. Though Vatanen's "achievements" in this new existence are limited, by the end there is no doubt that he is "a man to be reckoned with".

The Year of the Hare is a book at once simple and deep. It's a thoroughly enjoyable read that challenges the reader's assumptions about what's important in life.
