  Rod Stephens has written an excellent and much needed book on Visual Basic Programming. There are a myriad of books on the topic directed at folks with limited formal training but Stephen's book adds in the "View it" portion that most beginning books lack. This visual, see how the actual step by step programming takes place in the Visual Studio desktop is critical in learning. First you read it, then you view it and then you practice it. This is accomplished by including a DVD with the book that demonstrates the programming on 30+ examples corresponding to the same number of chapters in the book.
  
  Because of this approach the book is able to tackle some of the Visual Basic Programming topics that are only glossed over in many of the beginning books. If you are like me and not an IT professional (and don't aspire to be one), I think you'll find this book helpful in gaining a better grasp of what VB can do in making business applications more efficient and robust.
  
  This was the second book on Visual Basic that I tackled. The previous "beginner" book made this one easier to understand. I would encourage those interested in learning VB to follow the same path; start with a basic book and then read "24-Hour Trainer" to enhance your understanding. I would be negligent if I did not call out another feature that really sets this book apart from the herd: namely, personal help through the Wrox website. There were a few problems that I simply could not figure out and when I posted my "roadblocks" on the Wrox forum for this book they were answered very quickly in plain English by the author himself! It doesn't get any better than that! How many times have you posted a problem on a public forum only to have some propeller head give you an answer dripping in formalistic geek speak that only another IT mystic could decipher. And then chide you for wasting their time or not expressing your problem in the correct syntax or formalism. Not so with Wrox forums, very helpful.
  
  Cut to the chase: if you've dabbled in VB or VBA and you are looking to see a bit more, get this book and DVD. You will have made an excellent choice.

  Review: As a 15+ year VB programme, with most of my experience in VB6, I was really looking for a good reference/book to help me switch to the .NET flavor. I am comfy enough in the .NET IDE since I also dabble in C#, but my employer does not let us write in C#, so the transition to VB is needed. I was really looking for soemthing to help me with some of the differences. Still using this book, but was not that great for the transition, it is more geared to simply learning VB to start.

  Title: This Book Booted Me Up Into Visual Studio 2010

  Review: I am an experienced VBA software developer in the world of Microsoft Excel and Access and own my own company ---Logicwurks, LLC ([...]) in Eugene, Oregon. I previously made several attempts to learn Visual Studio 2010 using other texts, but found them either too long and detailed or too esoteric. This solid guide took me step by step into the world of Visual Studio development, which is quite different than the VBA behind Excel and Access. The learning method that worked best for me was to read a chapter and then watch the video for that chapter. Using both text and video, I was able to complete the "Try It" examples in the book. In a couple of cases, I opened up the "already solved" examples... either to refine my understanding of a particular feature in VB, or to compare my code to what Rod presented.
  
  I was surprised at how quickly I learned how to create forms and do calculations. The form objects in Visual Studio (textboxes, combo boxes, etc) are very feature-rich.
  
  Rod has a great way of logically stepping through each stage of the development process. Learning Visual Studio requires study and practice, but having this book as my roadmap has made it a pleasant journey. I had one question where I needed some advice, and I emailed the author. To my surprise, he responded the same day and was VERY helpful.
  
  I highly recommend this book to the serious developer.

  Title: Exceptional Aid as an Intro to VB dot Net

  Review: Having purchased many of Mr. Stephens' books over the years I was confident that this new book would help me transition from Classic VB-6 into the dot Net world.
  
  I was not disappointed, as I enjoy the author's style, and I found the included DVD, with video lessons, to be very helpful. I am keen on visual learning, and honestly, I need to watch the material a few times to allow the many points to sink-in, even though they were very well presented.
  
  This book is intended for those of you who are new to programming, with little or no prior experience with writing code. However, for me, given that dot Net is an other Universe compared to our old friend, VB-6, I wanted to ensure that I did not miss any minor points when learning the inner workings of this new development software ( the 2010 IDE, the editor ).
  
  For me, and a great many others, this book has worked out very well.
  
  If you are new to programming this book would serve you well, and it could be a great help to many who are looking towards a first college course in VB.Net. A way to get a 'leg up', so to speak, in advance of your course work, and to ensure that you achieve an 'A' or an 'A+'.

  Review: Returned it. Since it dealt mainly with using Visual Studio Environment, rather than programming. I don't need to download code, otherwise I would have downloaded the book. I like to have a book that I can take alone and read it instead of sitting in from of a computer or other electronic device just to read. I know how to program, but I needed a book that introduced me to the programming language syntax in detail, since I have 10 x 1000's of code to convert from another.
