Title: My cat purchased it.

Review: Yes,you read it right.
In prayer ,I had the sample and no clue why I even downloaded it.
I got up to go to make a coffee and when I got back my ragdoll cat was near my phone and had patted it right on the purchase button.
I am quite glad she did it and I was also thankfull it was not expensive.
Who would beleive it if it had been.
I would not myself.
Well,it is true.
With God all things are possible.
Always remember that.
And because of it being true,I learned things about Israel I never would have.
In this incredible work,we learn exactly how people lived during the time of Christ.
What he saw growing up,the ways of men,Roman control over the Jews and much more.
We find out exactly who the Jews are and the customs of the people.
The writer was Jewish and converted to Christ.
He has written many great books,but start here.
I thank God for it.
And my cat,Bella.

Title: Excellent Resource for any Student of Scripture

Review: It took many months but I finally finished this book which had been sitting in my own personal library shelves for years. I originally ordered this copy-used from Amazon-to learn more about Jewish family life, and what the lives of women who lived during this time period might've been like. While it turned out to be an excellent resource on those two topics, I had neglected to read the other chapters. Until now.
With this year's study (2019) of the New Testament in "Come Follow Me" (the new study manual for the LDS church Sunday School lessons) I decided it was time to finish the book. And for those students of the New Testament who wish to make a more serious study, I cannot recommend this book highly enough as an excellent supplemental resource.
There are 18 chapters and 295 pages. Some of Edersheim gets a bit dense and technical but Chapter 3 "In Galilee at the Time of our Lord" paints a beautiful picture of what the area looked like during the time of Christ. Those chapters I was most interested in: Ch 6 "Jewish Homes" Ch 7 "The upbringing of Jewish Children" Ch 8 "Home Education in Israel" and Ch 9 "Mothers, Daughters and Wives in Israel" were especially enjoyable to re-read.
The remaining chapters focus on commerce and the hierarchy of various trades at the time (and where the carpenter's trade fit into the social scene) the "fraternity" of the Pharisees and why everyone wanted to be in that "club" and what a typical Sabbath day worship at the local synagogue was like. There are some beautiful prayers included here. The reader should come away from this text with a greater understanding and respect for this very special, ancient, religion that was truly the Lord's own church...until he gave it an "upgrade!"

Review: This book, as well as his other books, afford an actual look into the times written about. Knowledge has a way of assisting understanding. The writing style is much fuller than today’s, and brings a breath of fresh air with it.

Review: When picking this book up I thought, "This will be a nice addition to the cultural studies we have been doing on Judaism, etc." I was blown away by the content, and this book needs no other addition. It is quite complete in its assessment of social life. The layout was well thought out and chapters were organized. The content was portrayed in a way to make me look forward to reading the next section. Great book!

Review: I seldom do 5 stars but this writing has totally captured my interest, I read and re-read, it has done so much to bring me closer to Israel, when combined with some other Messianic Jewish authors it witnesses so powerful to life at the time Jesus lived in Israel.

Title: Excellent Companion for Bible Study

Review: I would have definitely given this book more starts if it were available. The language is easy, the information is excellent.

If you need to know how the land of Israel was divided, governed and how people would travel, interact, their perception on neighboring cities, then this is the book you need to read.

Edersheim pulls references from different resources: the Bible (OT and NT), the Mishnah, the Talmud, Josephus, and other biblical scholars like Meier, Lightfoot, ..

The information gives you in depth look at the minds of the people Jesus dealt with; Gentiles and Jews alike.

I will give you a brief example of how this book helped me. More than few biblical scholars say that Jesus met Matthew at the seashore while he was collecting customs. Edersheim sheds light on Capernaum, the city where Matthew lived, and explains the word "road" in that event as a major highway at that time where the tax collectors used to sit to inspect the goods and collect customs. He also goes in the details of the story to show that Matthew definitely was not at the seashore when Jesus met him.

I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to further his/her knowledge and understanding of the New Testament.

The book assumes knowledge of the New Testament major events. If you are not familiar with the New Testament, then this book will not be of help to you.
